The Connected Places Catapult
accelerates smarter living and
travelling in and between the
places of tomorrow.
Our vision is for the UK to lead
the world in creating cities, towns
and places which thrive on their
ability to connect people to
resources, opportunities, ideas
and each other. Where the smooth
flow of people, goods,
transportation and services,
drives economic success,
productivity and wellbeing.
Connected Places Catapult has been supporting a
successful City Region Deal in Belfast which was
awarded £500m and is expected to deliver £2
billion in additional GVA and 10,000 new jobs,
including over £150m of private investment from
major companies in the region.
It has also been instrumental in the UK developing
world leading Connecting and Autonomous
vehicle technology, including overseeing the
ground breaking LUTZ pathfinder Pod project,
generating £435m in additional investment and
£110m worth of global media coverage.

The UK’s leading advanced
digital technology innovation
centre
Accelerating the early
adoption of advanced digital
technology. Making UK
businesses more competitive
and productive to grow the
country’s economy.
Digital Catapult’s open access low-power wide-
area networks (LPWAN) testbed is helping UK
Sigfox operator, WNDUK roll-out its
narrowband network to achieve 95% UK
population coverage by 2019. This has
accelerated access to deployment sites,
funding and connections, benefitting over 50
startups and scaleups.
Digital Catapult has been critical in fast tracking
development of the resulting Internet of Things
products and services.

Unleashing innovation and
open new markets to capture
the clean growth opportunity
Accelerating the transformation
of the UK’s energy system and
ensure UK businesses and
consumers capture the
opportunities of clean growth.
It takes a whole systems view of
the energy sector, helping us to
identify and address innovation
priorities and market barriers to
decarbonise the energy system at
least cost.
Energy Systems Catapult has developed a national
asset called the ‘Living Lab’ - a 100 home test and
demonstration environment for businesses to trial
new energy products and services in homes
retrofitted with room-by-room sensors and smart
heating controls. By trialling with real people,
including vulnerable households, businesses can
rapidly design, market-test and launch innovations
that give consumers better control over cost and
comfort, and scale for low carbon technology.

Driving growth of
manufacturing
Our strategy is to grow the
UK’s advanced
manufacturing value add by
helping industry to develop
new manufacturing
technology.
We will create the conditions
for economic growth by
enabling UK manufacturers to
achieve significant
improvements in their
performance and
productivity.
Improving Productivity
HVM Catapult Advanced Manufacturing
Research Centre (AMRC) helped transform
Rolls Royce’s productivity in disc machining –
reducing the manufacture time by 50% -
helping improve cost competitiveness and to
secure a £100m investment in a new disc
manufacturing facility in Tyne & Wear.
The same know-how also attracted Boeing to
establish its only European manufacturing
facility in the UK producing components more
cost effectively than at its Mexican operation.
The expertise of engineers from our
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre
(AMRC) with Boeing has enabled our
industry partner, Rolls-Royce, to reduce the
production time and increase performance
when
manufacturing key components, called aero-
engine discs.

MS is a devastating, debilitating disease.
To enable new treatments to reach patients faster, the MS
Society wanted to identify existing treatments that could
be repurposed for use in MS. A list of potential candidates
was compiled by an expert consortium.
Using a data-driven approach and machine learning
techniques, MDC supported this strategic drug
prioritisation exercise by compiling an independent list.
This project verified the expert generated list and
identified ~300 further potential candidates for
investigation.
Ultimately, MDC provided confidence that the drug
candidates selected to clinical trials had the best chance
of success and the potential to provide patients with
better treatments faster.
“It has been a pleasure working with MDC on this
project, which has given the MS Society an opportunity
to utilise the impressive informatics skills and
capabilities at MDC to complement our work. Our
treatment selection initiative is focussed on achieving
impact for people affected by MS through accelerating
the development of treatments and MDC have been an
effective responsive and collaborative partner in
helping us make progress.”

Our vision:
To be the world’s leading
offshore renewables
technology centre.
Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult has launched
its Fit for Offshore Renewables (F4OR) programme,
in partnership with the High Value Manufacturing
Catapult. This programme allows companies to
measure the standards of their operations against
industry requirements standards and to take steps to
close the gap. This is helping the UK supply chain
prepare for the grow of the industry and already
helping companies win new contracts as a result.
The Catapult is also delivering a £100m supply chain
growth programme on behalf of the industry, to help
UK companies seeking to grow their business in this
rapidly-growing global market.

Demonstration (IOD) programme offers companies
a fast track, low cost opportunity to test a service or
technology in orbit. This is enabling US Orbital
Micro Systems (OMS) to move operations to the UK
with new commercial opportunities in aerospace,
maritime transportation, agriculture, insurance and
energy.

(HIE) and Corporate Health International is helping
detect bowel disease using satellite-enabled Video
Capsule Endoscopy. A tiny video capsule consumed
orally by patients, uses satellite technology to
upload data and images for consultants to review,
reducing the need for travel and invasive
procedures.
