PALM SUNDAY
Palm Sunday is the end of our Lenten
journey accompanying Christ in the
wilderness and the beginning of being
with him on his journey to the cross.
Many of us will spend our time this
morning celebrating the Eucharist
with the reading of the Passion to
place our minds in the setting. Others
of us will be reading the account of
Jesus entering Jerusalem. We strive
today to obey the advice of St Paul
from the epistle reading that we
should follow Christ who entered into
the most bleak and sorrowful parts of
human life for our sake.

Processional Hymn
All glory, praise and honour
To you, Redeemer, King
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet Hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
And David’s royal son,
Now in the Lord’s name coming,
The King and blessèd one.
Refrain
The company of angels
Are praising you on high,
And we and all creation
Exultant make reply.
Refrain
The people of the Hebrews
With palms before you went:
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before you we present.
Refrain
St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 20th March 2016
To you before your passion
They sang their hymns of praise:
To you now high exalted
Our melody we raise.
Refrain
Their praises you accepted:
Accept the prayers we bring,
Who in all good take pleasure,
Our good and gracious King.
Refrain
Your sorrow, and your triumph
Grant us, O Lord, to share,
That to the holy city
Together we may fare:
Refrain
For homage may we bring you
Our Victory o’er the foe,
That in the Conqueror’s triumph
This strain may ever flow:
Refrain
Theodulph of Orleans (d. 821) tr. John Mason Neale
Gradual Hymn:
The royal banners forward go,
The cross shines forth in mystic glow
Where he in flesh, our flesh who made,
Our sentence bore, our ransom paid.
There while he hung, his sacred side
By soldier’s spear was opened wide,
To cleanse us in the precious flood
Of water mingled with his blood.
Fulfilled is now what David told
In true prophetic song of old,
How God the nations’ king should be:
For God is reigning from the tree.
O tree of glory, tree most fair,
Ordained those holy limbs to bear,
How bright in royal robe it stood -
The purple of a Saviour’s blood!
Upon its arms, like balance true,
He weighed the price for sinners due,
The price which none but he could pay,
And spoiled the spoiler of his prey.
To you, eternal Three in One,
Let homage due by all be done:
As by the cross you now restore,
So rule and guide us evermore.

-1866) alt.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 20th March 2016
Offertory Hymn: (A collection is taken during singing of this hymn for
ministry at the Cathedral)
My song is love unknown,
My Saviour’s love to me,
Love to the loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O who am I
That for my sake
My Lord should take
Frail flesh, and die?
He came from his blest throne
Salvation to bestow:
But men made strange, and none
The longed-for Christ would know,
But O my friend!
My friend indeed,
Who at my need
His life did spend.
Sometimes they strew his way
And his sweet praises sing,
Resounding all the day
Hosannas to their King.
Then “Crucify!”
Is all their breath
And for his death
They thirst and cry.
Why, what has my Lord done?
What makes this rage and spite?
He made the lame to run,
he gave the blind their sight.
Sweet injuries!
Yet they at these
themselves displease,
and ‘gainst him rise.
They rise and needs will have
My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they save;
The Prince of life they slay.
Yet cheerful he
To suffering goes,
That he his foes
From thence might free.
In life, no house, no home
My Lord on earth might have;
In death, no friendly tomb
But what a stranger gave.
What may I say?
Heaven was his home;
But mine the tomb
Wherein he lay.
Here might I stay and sing,
No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King,
Never was grief like thine.
This is my friend,
In whose sweet praise
I all my days
Could gladly spend.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 20th March 2016
Final Hymn
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
Hark, all the tribes hosanna cry!
O Saviour, meek, pursue your road
With palms and scattered garments strowed.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
O Christ, your triumphs now begin
O’er captive death and conquered sin.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
The wingèd squadrons of the sky
Look down with sad and wondering eyes
To see the approaching sacrifice.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
Your last and fiercest strife is nigh;
The Father on his sapphire throne
Awaits his own anointed Son.
Ride on, ride on in majesty,
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
Bow your meek head to mortal pain,
Then take, O God, your power and reign!

9. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for | I am . in | trouble :
my eye wastes away for grief,
my throat also | and my | inward | parts.
10. For my life wears out in sorrow, and my | years with | sighing :
my strength fails me in my affliction,
and my | bones | are con- | sumed.
11. I am become the scorn of | all my | enemies :
and my neighbours | wag their | heads in . de- | rision.
12. I am a thing of horror | to my | friends :
and those that see me | in the | street | shrink from me.
REFRAIN 13. I am forgotten like a dead man | out of | mind :
I have become | like a | broken | vessel.
14. For I hear the | whispering . of | many :
and | fear is . on | every | side;
15. While they plot to- | gether . a- | gainst me :
and scheme to | take a- | way my | life.
16. But in you, Lord, have I | put my | trust :
I have said | ‘You | are my | God.’
17. All my days are | in your | hand :
O deliver me from the power of my | enemies .
and | from my | persecutors.
18. Make your face to shine up- | on your | servant :
and save me | for your | mercy’s | sake. REFRAIN

Easter message from Dean Phillip Christ has died, Christ has risen. Alleluia!
Faith built on Jesus’ death and resurrection changed the world. It overcame the violet, brutal and fatalistic view of life in ancient Rome with a radical new social movement called the Church with a message of a new way of living. This faith in the crucified and risen Christ makes most sense when embodied in a community. A community which grew and spread throughout the world with its message of “love”. Easter is a time for reflecting on the central truth of the Christian Gospel—the sacrifice made and death overcome. New hope and value for human life. It is a time to renew our faith in the risen Christ or turn to him for the first time. And so we rejoice because darkness has been banished and hope is renewed. Alleluia! On behalf of all the Cathedral clergy and their families I wish you all a very Happy, Holy and safe Easter. Dean Phillip Saunders
