Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Church is appealing to us on Trinity Sunday to reflect again on our personal relationship with the Trinity. Through our reason and with faith we can grasp this mystery at some level when we

ponder it. All the readings this Sunday point to the

mercy of God despite our weaknesses and mistake. God is the one who takes the initiative with us and sends us his Son so that we would not perish. He does this out of love for us, not to judge us. How we react to the coming of the Son is a judgment we make on ourselves. For example a lover of music might invite his friend to a symphony. The friend knows nothing of music but the music lover wants to introduce him to a great experience. During the symphony concert the friend is a nervous wreck, fidgeting and gazing around the hall, and is extremely bored. This friend has passed judgment on himself that he has no sense of music. This new experience designed to bring him new happiness is a bore for him.

Another example is the visitor who is being shown certain masterpieces in an art gallery, which are spectacular and beautiful. At the end of the tour the visitor says to the attendant: “Well, I don’t think much of your old pictures.” The attendant answered quietly: “Sir, I would remind you that these pictures are no longer on trail, but those who look at them are.” The man’s reaction has shown his own blindness.

The same is true when we are presented with the love of the Trinity for us. Does it overwhelm us, or do we find ourselves always grumbling about something in our life? Do we see a glimpse of the awesomeness of God in this mystery? Are we grateful this love of Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

This feast comes to help us to see the love of God for us. If we reflect about this we can see the love of God in our parish, in our families, and in ourselves. May the Father, Son and Holy Spirit be a reality in our lives and a simple pious act like the sign of the cross can remind us of our triune God.

FOOD PANTRY As spring segues into summer, the workers in the

Food Pantry would like to publicly thank the members of the Carlstadt Women's Club who

have faithfully contributed needed items for the pantry at every monthly meeting. Their consistent

contributions have played a vital part in the functioning of this program. We, and the people

we serve, are extremely grateful for your generosity. Special thanks to Jean Kimak who

supervised collection and delivery of these goods. Summer creates special needs at the Food Pantry.

Because children are on summer vacation, they are no longer receiving lunches in school. This results in added stress for financially strapped parents. Anyone who feeds hungry kids knows that they can consume enormous quantities of

food very quickly! So, we are asking that you take a minute or two

every time you are shopping, to pick up a few items for the pantry. If you have never

contributed in the past, here is a golden opportunity to live the gospel message to "feed

the hungry". (MT:23) God will reward you for your generosity.

Our most needed items are:

Cold Cereal - Peanut Butter Canned Fruit

pasta sauce - Mashed Potatoes Chunky Soups

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Thursday: St. Romuald Saturday: St. Aloysius Gonzaga

CHURCH CHUCKLES A Pastor said to the precocious six-year-old Tommy John, “So

your mother says your prayers for you each night? Very

commendable. What does she say?” The little boy replied, “Thank God he’s in bed!”

New Music Books We are planning to order new hymnals, hard-

covered, and including the Sunday readings for the three year cycle. In this way we have a much better and updated music book and there will be

no need to order the small missalettes every season. The Breaking Bread song book would remain for some of our favorites and the new

hymnal would be our primary book. We need four hundred of the new books and twenty-five for the

choir. If anyone would like to contribute to this wonderful improvement of our music ministry, we

would be very grateful.

DAILY MASS IN THE CHURCH For the next few months while work is being done

in the convent (bringing it up to code), the daily Masses will be in the church. Please sit together and

up front since it makes for a better assembly and a way to get to know the others. We hired an architect

several weeks ago and he is beginning to make plans for its future use. Please keep this work in your

SEVERAL SOURCES SHELTERS Through the generosity of our parishioners,

Several Sources Shelters, who spoke at all the Masses on the weekend of June 1st collected over $2,700. They called to say how grateful they are

for our generosity! A movie, Gimme Shelter, is available on Redbox and other venues and is true story about a teen

mother whose life was changed through Several Sources and the women they serve.

DID YOU NOTICE The many new altar servers in our parish and their new cassocks and surplices.

The high school students who are lectors at our Masses.

The new playground in the right side of our school, which we have access to on Sundays, and that Primetime installed and paid for.

New outdoor lights on the front of the church and Hoboken Rd. side of the church, which highlights the beauty of our church at night. All the boilers have been cleaned and water treated for the next cold season, many months from now.

SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Aloysius Gonzaga The Lord can make saints anywhere, even amid the brutality and license of Renaissance life. Florence was the “mother of piety” for Aloysius Gonzaga despite his exposure to a “society of fraud, dagger, poison and lust.” As a son of a princely family, he grew up in royal courts and army camps. His father wanted Aloysius to be a military hero. At age seven he experienced a profound spiritual quickening. His prayers included the Office of Mary, the psalms and other devotions. At age nine he came from his hometown of Castiglione to Florence to be educated; by age 11 he was teaching catechism to poor children, fasting three days a week and practicing great austerities. When he was 13 years old he traveled with his parents and the Empress of Austria to Spain and acted as a page in the court of Philip II. The more Aloysius saw of court life, the more disillusioned he became, seeking relief in learning about the lives of saints. A book about the experience of Jesuit missionaries in India suggested to him the idea of entering the Society of Jesus, and in Spain his decision became final. Now began a four-year contest with his father. Eminent churchmen and laypeople were pressed into service to persuade him to remain in his “normal” vocation. Finally he prevailed, was allowed to renounce his right to succession and was received into the Jesuit novitiate. Like other seminarians, Aloysius was faced with a new kind of penance—that of accepting different ideas about the exact nature of penance. He was obliged to eat more, to take recreation with the other students. He was forbidden to pray except at stated times. He spent four years in the study of philosophy and had St. Robert Bellarmine (September 17) as his spiritual adviser. In 1591, a plague struck Rome. The Jesuits opened a hospital of their own. The general himself and many other Jesuits rendered personal service. Because he nursed patients, washing them and making their beds, Aloysius caught the disease himself. A fever persisted after his recovery and he was so weak he could scarcely rise from bed. Yet, he maintained his great discipline of prayer, knowing that he would die within the octave of Corpus Christi, three months later, at the age of 23.
