Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Please bring your mobile phone to church on Ash Wednes-

day. Why? If you haven’t already signed up for it, the priest will ask

everyone to pull out their phone during the homily and text

“OPVCATHOLIC” to 84576. This is to activate you into the

Flocknote connection. Flocknote is a way for a church community to

be connected with one another. As we continue to function in five

different churches, it can help us be more aware of what is going on

with our interests in the parish and grouping community. Every

parishioner can sign up for only the information that they want to

receive, and it can work through either text messages to your phone

or email. Over one hundred parishioners are now getting the bulletin

online every week through Flocknote. Others have signed up for

special speakers and presentations that are happening, getting

alerts when a fellow parishioner passes away, Holy and Holiday

service times, schedule alerts and changes due to weather. See the

complete list on page 16 of this bulletin. When you send the

“opvcatholic” text to 84576, you will receive a link to access the other

information, or you can enter your email and complete from your

email. (see the screen to the right). As a playful first event, after all

of our Ash Wednesday services are over, all our parishioners in

Flocknote will be sent a message

asking them to respond with their

favorite Lenten activity (Getting

Ashes, Extra time for Prayer, Fish,

etc…). If you respond, you will be

entered in a drawing for a FREE fish

dinner at one of our four Friday fish

nights.

Lent begins this Ash Wednesday and our parish grouping

is offering prayer and almsgiving as priorities this year. Once again,

we are having Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in each

church at specified hours during the week. Check out a church time

for you to commit an hour of prayer, adoration, thanksgiving and

petitions you might want to bring to God this season. Times for

adoration are on page 7 in this bulletin and also on the Lenten flyer

on page 15. Black Book Devotionals are available at each church

this weekend for lenten reflections. The small print versions are

available at each church entrance. There are large print versions for

those who need them available in the sacristy at each church. Ask a

priest or lay minister to get you one after Mass. Both small print and

large print are only available while supplies last at each church. For

Almsgiving, we are having donations collected by our Confirmation

class and youth each week. At every Friday Stations of the Cross,

a collection basket will be available for donations to the

Chimbote Foundation, which helps families, expectant mothers

and children in need in the desert impoverished area of Chimbote,

Peru. (See Lenten flyer on page 15 for stations times and locations).

With Lent, our Diocese always begins the Parish Share

Program (PSP) campaign. Bishop Zubik has sent a letter directly to

all registered parishioners in our diocese this year. If you did not

receive it, a copy is on page 13. Our parishes are not yet combined,

but we will all merge in July. Our Parish Share campaign will be

merged together as we become one parish. Our combined Parish

Share Goal is a whopping $458,928. Part of that was due to the

generous donation to our parishes from a large bequest last year.

Otherwise, the amount would be around $280,000. Regardless, any

donation to parish share helps our grouping and our parishes.

Please consider a one time gift or a weekly donation noted on your

weekly offering envelopes. An explanation of how contributing to

Parish Share can help our parishes is shown in the box on this page.

Thank you for your generosity to our parishes & The Parish Share

Program. In Christ’s Love,

Father Kevin

Parish Share Program (PSP) Example

As an example, if our combined offertory and income for our

parishes totaled $1 million dollars a year, every year. Our parish

share goal would be calculated as 17.6%, or $176,000. We pay

that amount even if we don’t raise any money for PSP, and we

don’t pay more, if we raise more. So as another example, let’s

say we raised $200,000 every year to meet and exceed our

goal. Our offertory collections would be $800,000 plus $200,000

to Parish Share. We would send $176,000 to the Diocese for the

shared services our parish shares in. We would keep $824,000 to

be used in our parish for staff salaries and services. Even though

we raised an extra $24,000, we could use that for parish projects

and improvements. However, next year, we would only have a

Parish Share Goal of $140,800, over $35,200 less. And we

would keep almost $860,000, after we raised our parish share

goal or exceeded it. This is almost $36,000 more that we could

use for needed parish programs and services, all while supporting

the Parish Share Program.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and

abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United

States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at

the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and

two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should

consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may

be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some

other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by

the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of

penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of

penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is pre-

scribed by the law.

6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of

abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some

serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets,

wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered

sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

READING I LV 19:1-2, 17-18

The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the whole Israelite

community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am

holy.

“You shall not bear hatred for your brother or sister in your heart.

Though you may have to reprove your fellow citizen, do not incur

sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge

against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as

yourself. I am the LORD.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13

R. The Lord is kind and merciful

Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy

name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful

He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your

life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful

Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding

in kindness. Not according to our sins does he deal with us,nor

does he requite us according to our crimes.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our

transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his

children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful

READING 2 1 COR 3:16-23

Brothers and sisters: Do you not know that you are the temple of

God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys

God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God,

which you are, is holy.

Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you considers

himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become

wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of

God, for it is written: God catches the wise in their own ruses, and

again: The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are

vain.

So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs

to you, Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or

the present or the future: all belong to you, and you to Christ, and

Christ to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. 1 JN 2:5

Whoever keeps the word of Christ, the love of God is truly

perfected in him.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL MT 5:38-48

Jesus said to his disciples:

““You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth

for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.

When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one

as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic,

hand over your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into

service for one mile, go for two miles. Give to the one who asks of

you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.

“You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor

and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and

pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of

your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and

the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.

For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you

have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet

your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans

do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is

perfect.”

carcelamiento, pobreza, enfermedades, penas morales. Arran-

quen con su oración la misericordia de Dios Omnipotente. Medi-

ten el Evangelio ante el Santísimo Sacramento, expresen en sus

oraciones públicas los sentimientos defeen Jesucristo, Hijo de

Dios vivo y Salvador de los hombres (Cf Juan 3, 17);

EASTER CANDLE

This year will probably be the last year for each of our

parishes to have a newly blessed Easter/Paschal

candle. In future years, being one parish, we will only

individuals offered to purchase the Easter Candle in memory of a

loved one or family members. The Easter/Paschal Candle is used

throughout the year for all baptisms and funerals and throughout the

Easter season. If you or your family are interested in doing that,

contact Karen Deemer at (412) 793-4511 X201 or at

[email protected]. The costs are as follows:

CHOIR MIX IN OPV

The most recent mixes of choir for the Oakmont/

was a great success! Several parishioners

remarked on the fuller sound and the enhancement to the Mass

liturgy with combining for select weekends. We are going to mix

choirs again next month. These are the dates for the “mixing”:

Conversational Spanish for Seniors

The OLOJ SOS Ministry team is considering offering a course to the senior

population in our OPV group. The course would be “Conversational Span-

ish” and would be taught by parishioner Diane Vitalbo, retired Plum Spanish

teacher. She is proposing to offer the class once a week for an hour and it

would run for 4 weeks. If we have enough interest to offer the course, we

would start in the spring at Our Lady of Joy. In order to gauge how many

people would willing to commit to taking this class, please call Diane at 412

-798-9147 to register before March 15, 2020.
