SENIORSCentenary National Seniors Update

by Marlene Worthington, Club President

Are you off to the Ekka this month? It’s always a great outing and so is our Annual General Meeting held at the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday, August 5th at 9.30am starting with a beautiful morning tea. We will sadly lose some of our long standing Committee Members but will also gain some new blood. This will be followed by entertainment with Lachlan Wallace.

The highlight for August will be Seniors’ Week activities from August 16th to 24th. Our Explorer trip will be bussing to Newstead House and looking over it, followed by a ferry ride on the river back to Southbank for lunch.

Our coach trip to Highfields (up on the Toowoomba Range) last month was really terrific in spite of the weather being a bit chilly – laughter kept us warm. We are holding a Seniors High Morning Tea’ at the Jindalee Bowls Club on 19th August starting at 10am with a concert followed by the ‘High Tea.’ This is a FREE activity for any Senior living in the Centenary area and is co-sponsored by COTA. Please call 3279 1444 to book in.

We also have our Steady Steps exercise classes at Centenary Uniting Church Hall every Monday morning at 9am, our MahJong classes are held every 1st and 2nd Thursday each month at 9am in the Mt Ommaney Library Meeting Room, Book Club at Jindalee Bowls Club Library – 10am on the 3rd Thursday each month, evening dinners at various local venues, concerts and plays, and of course we don’t need an invitation to get together for morning tea or lunch somewhere.

New Members are welcomed on the 1st Tuesday each month at the General Meeting held at the Jindalee Bowls Club, 9.30am start where Sue would love to greet you at the door.

For more details please call 3279 1444 and if I am unavailable at the time, please leave your name and phone number on the answering machine and I will get back to you directly.

I’ve spent a good amount of my life feeling like I didn’t ‘fit in’. I was never popular, never cool, not particularly sporty, and definitely not smart enough to hang with the ‘nerds’. There just was not a group where I could look around and say to myself, ‘yes, these are my people!’.

The result is that once I hit about 30, I realised I didn’t care and that the sound of my own drum resonated with me, even if it didn’t for anyone else. And that was liberating.

Since coming back from Thailand a year and a half ago, that feeling has slowly but steadily been creeping back but with a different slant. I look around at all I have, at all we have, in the Western world and wonder why I’m here. Why do I get to have running water, electricity, the right to vote, the ability to receive an education and find gainful employment? Why me?

Contentment is the art of being at peace no matter our circumstances. And we generally take that to mean being content when we have less than we want or when we are going through difficulties. Sometimes, it’s hard to be content when things are going well and we have no problems, especially when we read or watch the news, or when friends and family are doing it tough.

It’s hard to be content with all the plenty we have, in the face of so many who have so little. I find it’s a constant challenge, not to be grateful, but to be okay with all we have.

While at the beach on our recent holiday, I came across a weed growing out of the rocks. It was flowering with pretty daisy-like yellow flowers. The yellow was such an unexpected bright spot against the rocks and the words ‘grow where you’re planted’ popped into my mind.

It’s tempting to think we have been planted in the wrong spot. It’s tempting to uproot ourselves and go where we think we will be best suited. We’re not content with just growing where we are. We’re always on the lookout for a climate that we think will encourage more growth, where our true potential will be maximised. It’s tempting to think my life would be better spent being in Thailand working with the rescued girls. It’s tempting to think I am wasting it, here in the land of plenty.

And sometimes we’re right. Sometimes we need to pick up and move halfway across the world to make a difference. And sometimes, it’s not. By speaking and writing about what is happening to these girls, I could be making more of an impact than if I were there physically.

It’s important to remember that we are where we are for a reason. We may never really understand that reason but until we fully embrace our surroundings, we won’t grow or bloom.

Maybe you are where you are simply to provide that bright spot among the blacks and browns in someone else’s landscape.

Hello ReadersAs we begin Term Four at St John’s we can look back over Semester One and be very pleased with student outcomes and achievements across the full range of our balanced College programs. Highlights of Term Three included our community oriented events in May where Hospitality students catered for over 200 guests and the College Corelli Strings performed at the Mother’s Day High Tea; students joined forces with the very focused and enthusiastic College Carnival Committee to raise funds for College facilities and resources; students performed in choral, band and orchestra ensembles demonstrating a very high level of musicianship at the interstate Combined Music Festival; and students committed themselves to performing well and with excellent sportsmanship in their first ever team sport competition in the Blue Division of TAS Sports.

In the Primary school students have also enjoyed a very successful semester, participating in a host of engaging learning activities including academic challenges, performing arts concerts, sporting events, camps and excursions. Unlike other schools, a St John’s education provides a truly enriched experience which develops the whole child and encompasses academic, creative, physical, spiritual and social aspects. These experiences and more ensure our students are provided with the best foundations for future learning.

On the world stage, two St John’s athletes will represent our country in the forthcoming Commonwealth and Young Olympic games. Old Collegian, Hannah Joye competing in High Jump in the Commonwealth Games and Year 12 student Trae Williams competing in sprint events at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in August.

As part of our commitment to continuous review and development of our programs, recently, we have engaged with the Confucius Institute at the University of Queensland in order to provide our students with the opportunity to develop deeper understanding of Chinese culture and language. This alliance will provide us with resources and opportunities for in country teacher professional development. This additional support for the teaching of the Chinese language fits with the expanded opportunities for students to study an additional language in the secondary school through our Language Hub.

Please visit St John’s at our next Open Day and experience the St John’s spirit first hand.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the commencement of Meals on Wheels in the Centenary Suburbs and in that time the service has delivered in excess of 130,000 meals to local clients.

This month meals will be sourced from NurtiFresh, part of the TriCare organisation. Meal packs consist of fruit juice, soup, a main course and dessert. A wide choice of nutritionally designed meals is provided to clients and special dietary requirements will be supplied if advised by the client’s doctor.

Meals are delivered by volunteers from Monday to Friday between 11.00am to 12.30pm or can be picked up at our Jindalee office under the Jindalee Bowls Club. The current cost of a meal is $7.00.

Meals on Wheels is a community based service for residents in their senior years who need some extra help with cooking, are recovering from hospitalisation, a major illness or surgery, or are a person of any age with a disability, a carer, or require assistance due to a special circumstance. Clients are referred to the service by their doctor, family member, community health services or themselves.

The purpose of the meal service is to enable people to continue to live comfortably in their own home. There is no waiting list, no means testing and no contracts.

All meals to clients are delivered by volunteers and Centenary Meals on Wheels currently has approximately 106 volunteers. The volunteers are made up of retirees, mothers who assist whilst their children are at school and employees whose employer sees the benefit in their staff volunteering for such work.

Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal. It is not only providing a service in suppling meals, but our clients also have the added benefit of a friendly visitor and a cheery “how are you” each time they deliver.

If you are interested in the service or require information about volunteering, please contact Centenary Meals on Wheels by calling 3279 1974, sending an email to [email protected], or visiting www.centenarymealsonwheels.com.au.

The sweetest day of the year is back for 2014. Join in the fun of the RSPCA’s Cupcake Day and help fight animal cruelty one cupcake at a time. The official date for Cupcake Day is Monday 18 August, but you can host your own event at any time until September. Get your friends, colleagues, family, school or even your pets involved to help make Cupcake Day 2014 the biggest and best yet!

It’s free to sign up and start fundraising for the RSPCA’s Cupcake Day. If you can’t host your own Cupcake Day this year you can still make a donation towards the cause by visiting www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au.

How can baking and selling cupcakes help the RSPCA? With over 44,000 animals that come through RSPCA Queensland’s doors every year, every contribution helps make a difference!

Last year 1900 fundraisers participated in the RSPCA Cupcake Day and this year the RSPCA is hoping to find even more fundraisers to help raise $400,000. All money raised goes directly towards helping RSPCA animals in need (domestic pets, livestock and wildlife patients) as well as helping to fight animal cruelty.

To get involved in this year’s RSPCA Cupcake Day and receive your free host kit, visit www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au. (Photo courtesy of Zoo Studio)

Once you have decided to sell your home, the next major decision you must make is how much to ask for it.

A sound and realistic strategy in setting your price can ensure you of two things - you will be more likely to obtain your asking price, or very close to it and you’ll obtain it sooner.

Be aware that the following factors are considered by Buyers when comparing ‘values’: location, age, size, features. And these factors are not: the price paid by the current owner, the capital cost of improvements, what the owners ‘need’ to be able to afford their next property.

Get a Current Market Analysis - The sale price of your home should be based on prices achieved recently on similar properties within your neighbourhood.

Sellers like to compare their properties with ‘better’ properties in the neighbourhood, yet it is also wise to consider ‘lesser’ properties – the value of a property lies somewhere in the middle. Remember the true value of your property will ultimately be determined by the Buyer.

If an Agent recommends a likely selling price, he or she should provide a Current Market Analysis detailing the comparable sales relied on to make that recommendation.

What About ‘Testing the Market’? - Pricing a property too high in the initial stages results in the following:• The Buyers looking in that price range do not consider

your property to be good value, as they have seen superior properties at that price;

• The Buyers who are looking for your type of property do not respond to its marketing, as it is not in their price range;

• The property has become ‘stale’ on the market;• If the price is subsequently reduced, the Buyers who are

aware of the price reduction do not immediately think of it as becoming ‘good value’ – they almost always ask themselves, ‘What is wrong with the property?, and inspections are carried out with a view to identifying its negative aspects.A Realistic Price - Pricing a property realistically

maximises the chances for the Seller to achieve a high sale price in a short time-frame.

A quick sale does not indicate that the property was ‘too cheap’; it is testimony to the accuracy of the Agent’s appraisal and assessment of the market.

Seller and Agent must work together to nominate a listing price which represents an amount above ‘fair market value’, but one that is achievable in the current market.

I always aim to sell the property at the list price, or to obtain offers within close range. Some Agents will deliberately quote a high ‘likely sale price’ initially, in order to obtain the listing at an unrealistic figure...only to lower the expectations of the Seller by providing ‘feedback’ to the contrary over the period of the Agreement. The State Government has taken steps to eliminate this practice, however, it is still occurring.

This month I thought I would discuss the importance of pricing your home correctly.

It can be confusing and frustrating, if you are training your dog and it’s still not working for you. Everyone has an opinion, but it is just not helping. You are made to feel inadequate as a dog owner. Take heart, there is a lot of misleading information out there. Only someone who is a certified canine psychologist with hands on experience with all breeds can help you and your dog.

Barking when excited or in defence of their territory is a natural response from dogs, however dogs that are bored will bark all day.

Unfortunately, consistent barking can become a behaviour pattern. Once this type of barking has become a habit, the dog will require training to control the barking. This training will require patience, consistency and rewards for positive reinforcement.

The first and foremost question to ask with all behaviour problems, is “Why? What sets the dog off?” “Everything”, you say. Well no, not really. It needs to be determined if it is excitement, defence, territorial, boredom, or loneliness. Once you establish the why, you are able to understand which training guide will help you achieve results. The breed of your dog will also play a major role in the best training regime that will give the best results.

Yelling at your dog to ‘stop’ really won’t do it, and in some cases it creates more excitement, which leads to more barking. Dogs have an excellent sense of hearing, yelling only gets you more upset than the dog. You need to get their attention, focus on you and what you are saying. A firm ‘no’ as soon as he stops, reward with “Good dog” and a favourite treat. Their focus of attention on barking has now been interrupted. “I tried that, and it doesn’t work”, you say. Be patient and consistent. And remember this is not an overnight result; it takes 60 days to change and to reform a habit. Consistency is the key to your dogs success and everyone happiness.

While you are away from the home, mind stimulating toys are incredibly helpful in keeping your dog busy for the day. These toys can be filled with your dog’s favourite treat and will take mental ability to work out how to retrieve the food.

When a dog is tired, they are much less likely to bark when bored. Toys are also a good way to keep your dog occupied when you are not at home.

Regular exercise for dogs such as walking or ball games is a great way to relieve boredom.

Now you have a well-excised and restful dog. When you come home, give lots of love and attention. A well-balanced dog is a happy dog and less likely to bark or seek attention.

Email me your dog’s behaviour problem and each month, I will select one to write about for a solution - [email protected].

WONDER DISAPPEARED

Tooth decay with gum disease is the most common condition that vets see, with 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three suffering from it. Most of us don’t look at our pet’s teeth on a regular basis – but bad breath may alert you to the condition! Loose and rotten teeth and even death can result from unchecked infections.

Just like in people, dental disease is painful. Pets don’t complain like people do, but will become more irritable, aggressive and can go off their food. They may also rub their faces on the ground and salivate. Teeth infections can spread to the heartvalves, kidneys and lungs and cause fatal complications.

Pets get dental disease from an inability to keep their teeth clean and free from plaque. Soft pet foods promote bacteria, calcium and tartar build up, especially in small breed dogs and short-nosed cats like Persians. Tartar can be removed easily under anaesthetic by performing a scale and polish but once the gums begin to lift away, the tooth may need to be removed or it will rot and fall out. By the age of 12 most small dogs and cats have lost several teeth from decay, if they are not kept clean.

Diet plays the major role in preventing dental disease. Supermarket foods have little or no effect in controlling plaque and tartar.

So how can you keep your pet’s teeth clean? This involves regular checking of the teeth by yourself

and your vet, feeding the right foods and using a pet toothbrush and toothpaste.

Large raw, meaty bones two to three times a week will scrape and “floss” the teeth, as do rawhide treats and even raw carrots. Cats do well on chicken wings.

Take the time to inspect your pet’s teeth regularly for tartar buildup and get your pet checked by a vet every year for tooth decay.

Dental disease is common and can be costly to treat, but is preventable if you spend the time to take preventative measures early.

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update

by Vice President Lynda Young

Life on the farms, bordering the Brisbane River, in the Seventeen Mile Rocks - Westlake area was very different to the busy suburbs we know today! Numbering as few as 100, these pioneering farmers led a simple life with no electricity, no cars, and no telephones, and relying, in the early years, on the river for transport.

The first land was sold in 1855 and was considered fertile enough to grow crops and support families. Mostly immigrants, from Ireland and Germany, these people were keen to own land and worked hard to expand their holdings. They cleared their land with axes and built their own houses using slabs of split timber. Initially they would have lived in tents! The whole family helped develop the land with the mother tending the vegetable garden and the children helping with many chores. Corn, potato and pumpkin were the chief food crops grown and by the 1870s a report in the Queenslander noted that, “the farmers had horses to work the land, a few milk cows, pigs to provide their own bacon and some to spare for market, as well as fowls and eggs”.

For these early families, life was very much like camping! Water had to be fetched from the creeks and cooking was done over the open fire. Bread was cooked in camp ovens and, with no fridges, meat was often salted or smoked. Fish was plentiful in the river in those early days particularly black mullet coming up the river for breeding.

Later, as the area became more developed, a school was built and church services held. An amusing comment appeared in The Queenslander in 1878 that...“Up to the present time no public house has been started in this locality, and should anyone be bold enough to commence one, the residents would probably oppose it very strenuously”.

Farmers relied on good weather for prosperity and, like today, floods and drought took their toll. A comment in the newspaper in August 1879 describes how, “the rain is pouring in torrents and will do harm I am afraid if it should continue. It is possible to have too much of a good thing.”

In her book, When River Was Roadway, Meg Gordon, a member of our Historical Society, describes in great detail the lives of our pioneering families with photographs and detailed references. Over the next months we will be introducing you to some of these early families who paved the way for the suburb you enjoy living in today. Life in the Centenary Suburbs in the 1800s

State Member for Mt Ommaney

a message from the desk of

Tarnya SmithMP17 new police hit the beat. Recently I joined with a few newly minted police officers at

the Mount Ommaney Police station to welcome them to the local community as they start their policing careers. The new first year constables will be an invaluable resource to the Mount Ommaney community and will revitalise frontline services as promised at the election. At the election, the LNP Government promised to deliver 1,100 officers statewide over four years, and we have delivered more than 750 officers already. It is all part of our strong plan to ensure that our local community can feel safer and better protected. On behalf of the residents of Mount Ommaney electorate I wish to extend the warmest of welcomes to the new officers.

$160,000 State funding boost for local community groups. Hardworking community organisations in the Mount Ommaney electorate are set for a mid-year funding treat as they receive their share in a pool of over $12.6 million in the latest round of State Government Community Grants. This welcome funding boost is delivered four times a year to dozens of charities and not-for profit groups through the Community Benefit Fund programs, to ensure they can continue their invaluable work within their community. The grants were a financial injection many groups could not afford to miss out on and allowed dedicated volunteers to focus on continuing their good work or providing better facilities and equipment. Whether it’s our local sporting groups, wildlife conservation societies or our brave firefighters, these groups play a huge role in our communities and need our support.

Successful organisations within the Mount Ommaney electorate were:• $31,818 for Darra Cementco Bowls Club to upgrade unsafe flooring;• $31,818 for Wesley Mission Brisbane towards carer support programs;• $72,662 for Montrose Access to install an integrated call system and purchase a powered hoist;• $25,454 for Miraa House to upgrade general facilities.
