Newsbrief July 1, 2010 The opening of the new Center for Health, Education and Research represents the culmination of over ten years of effort on behalf of a number of individuals and the fulfillment of a dream. A dream where students from across the region could be trained in a new state-of-the-art facility for an expanded variety of careers in healthcare. Where students and residents would train side by side and care for patients in a modern family medicine facility. And where research on the causes of chronic diseases in Eastern Kentucky can be evaluated and innovative solutions proposed. This new $30 million, 90,000 square foot facility is proof that success will follow where proper collaboration occurs. Located on the campus of St. Claire Regional Medical Center and constructed on land provided by St. Claire Regional, the facility is owned by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and managed by Morehead State University. The new Center will be operated as a partnership of the three institutional entities. A first where a regional university, a land grant university and a private non-profit corporation have so cooperated. The initial planning monies for the partnership were received through the efforts of Congressman Hal Rogers. These monies were followed by $1.5 million in state appropriations, to continue this planning process, and ultimately by $23 million in additional state appropriations for construction of the facility itself. An additional $1.5 million for the project was provided by the US Economic Development Administration in recognition of the significant financial impact that the Center will have on the local economy. We are very much indebted to our local legislators for their untiring efforts on our behalf to make this dream a reality. Of particular note are Representative Rocky Adkins, Representative John Will Stacy and Senator Walter Blevins. The opening of the new Center for Health, Education and Research represents the culmination of over ten years of effort on behalf of a number of individuals and the fulfillment of a dream.

ST. CLAIRE REGIONAL’S “MURDER ON MAUI”: A PICTURE STORY

Article By: Tom LewisPhotos by Mac Luckey and Tom Lewis

The St. Claire Foundation’s third-annual Mystery Dinner Theater, “Murder on Maui,” drew 140 amateur sleuths for an evening of fun, food and mayhem.

“It was our largest crowd and we raised nearly $11,000 to assist St. Claire Regional in establishing a state-of-the-art Women’s Imaging Center, complete with digital mammography and a stereotactic biopsy table,” said Tom Lewis, SCR Director of Development.

Guests were greeted by hula girls, who graciously draped Hawaiian leis around their necks and invited them to sample some of the island’s traditional – and not so traditional – foods. Guests interacted with the cast members throughout the evening, attempting to uncover clues leading to the identity of the murderer.

“It was just a fun evening for all involved,” said Susette Redwine, chair of the Foundation’s Signature Event Committee, which staged the event.

Checking out their programs for the evening were, from left, Betty Lewis-Snyder, Sister Jeanne Frances Cleves and Sister Joenita Schluetter.

Taking center stage for their bows were the cast members of “Murder on Maui,” who included, from left, Sue Luckey, Mac Luckey, Yvonne Baldwin, Shayla Menville, Steve Lewis, Julia O’Brien, Chuck Mraz, Brittainy Shaw, Jeff Lewis, Joe Sartor and Dee Halbleib. Missing from the photo but not from the cast was Al Baldwin.

Making the evening a family affair were, from left, Deveny Redwine, Bill Redwine, Brett Redwine, Susette Redwine, and with their backs to the camera, Mattie Redwine and Nancy Dalton.

The SCR Transport Team has expanded their services and is joining the SCR Volunteers and Patient Access staff at the information desk located at the entrance of the hospital.

The transport team assists family members and patients by providing wheelchair assistance to and from their vehicles and directing patients to the location of their tests and/or procedures within the hospital.

The transport staff has also adopted a new look for the department by wearing blue polo shirts labeled with Transport Team and khaki pants. We hope the consistent attire will help staff, patients and visitors better identified team members and make using the services easier.

The team is very pleased to offer additional services at the entrance of the hospital and throughout the facility and encourage all departments to utilize them.

Transport requests can be made by contacting ext 6427. If you have any questions about this service please contact Scott Miller, Transport Coordinator at 6427.
