From the Principal’s Desk written by Peter Craft Dear Parents and Caregivers, As we move into the second half of the term, our school continues to be a hive of activity. We have had students attending a variety of sporting trials, including cricket, AFL, netball and a number of sports for RAP.
Students in Year 6, 7 and 8 had a great time on the annual Transition Camp. The students explored aquaculture as they visited Narrandera Fisheries and the aquaculture facilities at Narrandera High School. Currently we are working at setting up yabby breeding in TAS classes so the students learned a lot from these visits.
In literacy we are re-introducing the Super6 strategies across the school. The Super6 are a set of skills that are explicitly taught which make up key skills of highly literate people. Currently we are introducing questioning and predicting. We are also explicitly teaching comprehension skills to students across the school.
There are a number of maintenance matters that will need to be addressed at our school. The work on the walkway and room upgrades are almost complete, although there is some painting and a few final details on the walkway to be finished. We will also have some work done tidying up trees around the school. During the next 12 months there are a number of projects that will be undertaken, including playground work, installing an area to store the school tractor, improving the tennis court along with its fencing and an upgrade of the staff room. Some of the playground projects and tennis court fencing would benefit from help from our P&C and community. Currently I am working to have the tile roofs on the TAS, Science, Administration and Primary block assessed with a view to having them replaced. This is an important and necessary upgrade to our facilities.
In the next few weeks students will be involved in the Tell Them From Me survey (Yrs 4 to 12) as well as preparations for NAPLAN online 2020.
Recently there has been a lot of information about the Corona Virus and its impact on the community. After advice from the Department of Education we have taken the decision to cancel or postpone a number of events. A note was sent home to advise parents about these changes to our calendar. Schools are updated daily by the DoE and we may be required to introduce more measures as a school. The school is actively planning for any further impacts that may possibly occur. We have also introduced enhanced hygiene practices within the school. To keep up to date with events, check our Facebook page and School Website. We will keep the community informed of important information as it becomes available.

Finley PSSA Netball
We have had a busy fortnight, with students participating in sporting events. On Monday 9th March, Emily, Amelia, Caitlin and Georgie attended the Finley PSSA Zone Netball tryouts. The girls should be proud of the skills they showed during the trials.
JeriBerriO’s Cricket
Friday 13th March was another busy day with Chase, Dane, Phillip and Dylan joining the JeriBerriO’s Cricket Team to verse Tocumwal Public School at the Tocumwal Recreation Reserve. From all recounts the boys displayed great sportsmanship.
Clean up Australia Day
In the afternoon of Friday 13th March, students and staff participated in the annual Clean Up Australia Day. The students were enthusiastic and the discussion that occurred around why we should look after our community by placing rubbish in the bin was amazing. It was quite refreshing to hear students reflecting on what they can do to look after our environment.
Harmony Day/World’s Great Shave
On Friday 27th March, we will be celebrating Harmony Day. Students are encouraged to wear orange clothing to school. After lunch, students will participate in activities that encourage inclusiveness and respect. Students are also encouraged to wear something colourful in their hair or colour their hair and bring a gold coin donation to support The Leukaemia Foundation’s, ‘World’s Greatest Shave’.

K/1 Primary Report written by Carly Murphy
What’s happening in K/1
K/1 have had a very busy start to the year. In literacy, Kinder have been learning their Jolly Phonics sounds and Year One have been completing Buddy Study to work on their spelling and develop their writing.
In Maths we have recently started working on length and data, collecting a lot of information about our class, including height and shoe size. The mathematical thinking students are showing is very exciting as their knowledge and understanding of topics grows.
We completed our first STEM lesson, which involved students using their problem solving skills to try and build a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows. It was great to see the students working together with the 2/3 class and sharing ideas, building resilience and developing teamwork skills.
Miss Pfahlert has also been working with them to create some beautiful rainbow fish and working on a number of other colourful art works. We will be continuing our very busy year with a lot of Easter activities coming up. I am very proud of the way they are all putting in their best learning efforts in the classroom.

Secondary Snippets Chess Team comes home with a Win
Oaklands Central School Chess Team
On Friday the 13th of March the OCS Chess Team travelled to the Narrandera Public Library to compete against Hay War Memorial High School. This was our first round game in the NSW South Wales Junior Chess League competition.
Competition was fierce and you could feel the tension in the air as the students concentrated on winning their games. Congratulations to Bailey and Connor who both were successful in winning their games. Well done team!
Our next game will be a home game and we will spend the following few weeks preparing for the next round. Lets hope we can improve on our excellent start to the chess season.

English - Stage 4
This term in English, students have been learning about the concept of identity, exploring culture and heritage and how we become the unique individual we are. Through discussion and research we are finding that nearly all of the students have an eclectic background, hailing from many different parts of the globe.
This understanding of heritage helps the students understand why diversity in Australia is so important. This term’s prescribed text has been ‘The Happiest Refugee’ written by Anh Do. This memoir details Anh’s migratory experience from communist ruled Vietnam to the western suburbs of Sydney. It is a heart-warming narrative that all of the students have enjoyed reading. It was amazing seeing how much of Anh’s life they could connect with, even though they all share a very different heritage, we are all part of one culture.
The stage 4’s have been working incredibly hard and should be congratulated on the wonderful start to the year they have made.
English - Stage 5
The stage 5’s have been exploring conflict in ‘Romeo and Juliet’, written by William Shakespeare. While none of the students had read the play before, they all knew the story itself. This proves just how enduring the idea of ‘star-crossed’ lovers is. Students identified different movies and books that contained the basic structure of two people from opposite sides of a conflict, falling in love.
They were surprised by how many of their favourite movies and TV shows contained the basic premise from a play written well over four hundred years ago! This has been a challenging unit, embracing the evolution of language and seeing how scripts were written during the 1500’s has forced the students to become expert translators very quickly.
Our focus for the rest of the term will be analysing the Baz Luhrmann film version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and finishing the major essay based on the unit theme of conflict.
Sport
Every Friday the secondary students have two periods of sport. It is amazing to see how excited and energetic the students become. This is an opportunity to focus on some fun games, good sportsmanship and teambuilding activities. This term we have completed swimming, table tennis, handball, soccer, touch football, capture the flag, cricket, gridiron and many more.
These Fridays are also an opportunity to participate in community wide activities. On the 13th (which luckily proved to be trouble free) the students all participated in a belated ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ event. The students did a fantastic job at cleaning the school, and the surrounding Oaklands community. It is truly wonderful seeing the entire school get together and make a real difference.
