He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”
The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them,
“Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” — Mk 4:39-40

Pastor’s Corner: Dear Parishioners:
Happy Father’s Day weekend to all our dad’s, granddads and all who are or have
been fatherly to us.
Thank you to all who have helped with the removal of classroom furniture, etc. to
prepare for the replacement of the first floor tiles in our school.
Twenty three couples participated in our annual marriage preparation program last
weekend at St. Augustine Church hall. I’m very grateful to the team couples and Gail
Gould, our Parish Life Coordinator, for their service in carrying out this ministry
again.
Please keep our Vacation Bible School team and children in our prayers as they begin
their program at St. Francis in Winthrop this week.
We are almost half way to meeting our Annual Diocesan Appeal goal. Pledges now
number 367. Please add your gift or pledge to this list. Use the envelope in the church
pew. Thank you.
I invite you to ponder this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that I shared with the 8th
grade students at their graduation ceremony on Monday.
“To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and
the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and
endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.”
Have a great summer!

WHO WERE THE PROPHETS?
THE PROPHETIC ROLE John stepped into goes back to a niche of Bible history from the ninth to the fourth centuries B.C. Prophets appeared when Israel’s priesthood and monarchy were up and running to balance (and apply brakes to) those institutions when necessary.
Prophets so often contradicted those in power that they seem like professional protesters camped outside the gates of government and organized religion.
This stance may have led to the demise of their role after both kingdom and Temple collapsed during the exile of the Israelites to Babylon. After Israel returned home, the office of the prophets was never quite the same. The voice of challenge ceased to be heard.
Yet the New Testament holds traces of that voice: in John the Baptist, who looks and sounds like Elijah; in Anna, who inhabits the Temple and is an early evangelist of the child messiah; and in the casual mention of Philip’s prophetic daughters in the Acts of the Apostles. In fact, traces of prophetic speech and action have surfaced in every gener-ation since that time.

REFLECTIONS FOR THE FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM
The Vatican Synod declares that the human
person has a right to religious freedom. This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that in matters religious no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs. Nor is anyone to be restrained from acting in accordance with his own beliefs, whether privately or publically, whether alone or in association with oth-ers, within due limits. The Synod further declares that the right to religious freedom his its foundation in the very dignity of the hu-man person, as this dignity is known through the re-vealed Word of God and by reason itself. This right of the human person to religious freedom is to be recog-nized in the constitutional law whereby society is gov-erned. Thus it is to become a civil right.

Walk with Me: The Journey A faith-based network of women in the Augusta area assisting
women released from jail to transition safely and successfully
back into the community. Walk with Me: The Journey is a
new mentoring program for women coming out of the Kenne-
bec County Jail. It is modeled after the successful mentoring
program, My Sister’s Keeper, in the Portland area. Too often
there is no one to support women in making a successful tran-
sition back into the community. They often find themselves
repeating the lifestyles that placed them in jail, and may end
up back there. Women are invited to learn about the Walk
with Me program while still incarcerated, and , if interested , a
process begins to match them with a mentor.
To learn more about this program, please call 458-1880.
