Worship Focus – Followers of Jesus – Look to Jesus in the Storms

In this storm filled life, lightning will crash and storm winds will howl. But there is always a reason for the storms we experience and in heaven all will be clear. Faith focuses not on what we see around us, but on what God has said. The Lord bids us to remember who He is and what He has promised and put our trust in Him. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:11) Job saw very difficult days, the kind of trials that might lead one to question the Lord and His ways. In our first reading we see that the Lord does not explain Himself to Job, He simply reminds Job who He is, the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. In our Gospel lesson for today, the disciples of Jesus were in great fear for their lives. Life in these days is much like riding out a storm on a sinking ship. Often times, we might wonder if God is really in control of everything as He promises. When life rocks your boat look to Jesus! What a blessing today is for us as we weather the storms of life. God’s Word reminds us to trust in the Lord, always.

SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP:

We thank You, Lord, for Your steadfast love and Your wondrous works. You hold power over wind and wave, sin and death. Deliver us from every trouble and distress, and bring us at last to our eternal haven in glory with You. I ask this in Your name. Amen.

INVOCATION .

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

CONFESSION 1 JOHN 1:8-9

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin and take away my guilt.

ABSOLUTION JOHN 20:21-23

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.

C: Amen.

God’s Word

FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON JOB 38:1-11 Trust in Him who controls all

1Then the LORD responded to Job out of a violent storm. He said: 2 Who is this who spreads darkness over my plans with his ignorant words? 3 Get ready for action like a man! Then I will ask you questions, and you will inform me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you understand anything about it. 5 Who determined its dimensions? I am sure you know. Who stretched out the surveying line over it? 6 What supports its foundation? Who set its cornerstone in place, 7 when the morning stars sang loud songs together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8 Who locked up the sea behind doors when it burst out of the womb? 9 When I clothed the sea with clouds, when I wrapped it with thick darkness as its swaddling cloths, 10 when I broke its power with my decree, when I locked it up behind barred, double doors, 11 I said, “You may come this far, but no farther. Here is the barrier for your proud waves.”

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 46 Christian Worship page 84

God is our refuge and strength,*

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way* and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam* and the mountains quake with their surging.

Refrain

Page 8: “Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea

7

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,* the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;* God will help her at break of day.

“Be still, and know that I am God;* I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

HOLY GOSPEL MARK 4:35-41

Jesus stills our fears

35 On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36 After leaving the crowd behind, the disciples took him along in the boat, just as he was. Other small boats also followed him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves were splashing into the boat, so that the boat was quickly filling up. 38 Jesus himself was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to drown?” 39 Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still lack faith?” 41 They were filled with awe and said to one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

exceptions (Please see latest CDC announcement). As St. Peter’s family, please look at each other in love, seeing each other as one for whom Jesus died and rose. Please be considerate of those who have legitimate reasons and concerns for wearing a mask or not wearing a mask. In love, let us be humble and put others before self. May St. Peter’s show to the community of Sturgeon Bay that we are family – a family who cares for and about each other, a family united in Jesus.

Ushers’ Schedule The new ushers’ schedule is now available in the ushers’ cabinet in the narthex.

Pastor Home Visits: Jesus said, “I know my sheep.” (John 10:14)

Did you know that the word “pastor” means “shepherd”? Following Jesus’ example, your pastors at St. Peter’s also want to get to know you better and how best to serve you. In 2019, Pastor Schroeder and Pastor Sauer began making home visits to every member household of St. Peter’s. They sought to visit all members whose names began with A through F. This summer, your Pastors are excited to continue visiting with the next quarter of the congregation. These visits are simply causal visits – be it 10 minutes or 2 hours - and are purely an effort to know and serve you better. Thank you, and your pastors look forward seeing you soon!

Summer Sermon Series

“Follow Me!” Jesus said these words to 12 men, 2,000 years ago …. and it changed the world! Jesus also looks at you and says, “Follow Me.” But what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? What does it really look like to follow Jesus?

Join as us as we answer these questions in our Summer Sermon Series – Following. Going through the Gospel of St. Mark, we’ll learn more about what it means to follow Jesus! Come join us!
