On Friday the 2nd February many of us in the Learning Support team, along with some of our students and staff, wore an article of orange clothing to support a charity event, ‘Go Orange for Muscular Dystrophy’. Many of us in the Learning Support team are familiar with the needs of students with this disability and wanted to help raise awareness.

The media continues to raise the profile of the lack of funding for supporting students with mental health needs and although as a school we employ a counsellor, who in turn also mentors trainee counsellors who offer time to our students on a voluntary basis, resources remain very limited for this vulnerable group of youngsters. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to raise awareness of a Government Green Paper called‘Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health Provision’, which was published on the 4th December 2017. This green paper sets out the ambition that children and young people who need help for their mental health are able to get it when they need it. The consultation closes at midday on the 2nd March 2018 and Iencourage as many parents as possible to have their say. https://engage.dh.gov.uk/youngmentalhealth/

In a half term holiday that sees both Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day in the same week, a first as far as I can remember, I wish everyone an enjoyable week.

We are at the half way point of yet another very busy academic year and I am always amazed at how much we manage to fit in. As usual students supported by the Learning Support team make excellent progress and many Year 11students are on track to make the transition to either The ChalfontsCommunity College Sixth Form or transfer to Local Colleges, to pursue College courses appropriate to their needs. Tuesday morning registration is very busy in the Learning Support Department as Learning Support Assistants, under our highly effective mentoring scheme, encourage and cajole Year 11 students to embrace revision for their forthcoming GCSE exams.

Many of our younger students have been introduced to a sport called Boccia, a precision ball sport similar to bowls, which was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy but is now played by a wide range of people.In the first game our students played, they did brilliantly and they are nowplaying regularly as a lunchtime activity. Boccia is a Paralympic sport which is played in over 50 counties worldwide. I have very high hopes for our students and am hopeful that we may have a star in the making!

To celebrate 100 years since the

Representation of the People Act 1918, which

in effect gave woman the right to vote, the

history department has set up a display to

recognise this historic achievement. Using a

collection of memorabilia that includes:

newspapers, pamphlets, postcards and event

posters from the time, students will gain

knowledge of the struggle that the

suffragettes went through to obtain the vote

for women.

Year 9 Immunisations

These were done on Monday 5th February. Students who

were absent need to see Miss Romney who will be

arranging a ‘catch-up’ date.

It is very important that parents keep the blue card that

every student was given, preferably in their ‘Red book’, as

they will need the dates in the future.

Year 13 student Simran Purewal demonstrated how to apply

a design to student’s hands and spoke to them about how

she does her own Mehndi designs.

Students then took turns applying the Henna to each

other’s hands and the results were fantastic.

Well done year 9 and thank you very much for giving up

your own time Simran to help them. Once again I am

extremely proud of our students.

Year 9 Art GCSE students have been learning about a range of different cultures in their ‘Tattoo My

Identity’ project. As part of this work they have been studying Mehndi Henna designs.

On Sunday 28th January thirteen students from The Chalfonts

Community College took part in the BSGA South Floor and Vault

Championships.

We entered three teams; U14 Mixed, U14 Girls and U19 Girls. Each

team had to complete a floor routine and two vaults with several

judges observing aspect of their performance. The team members

were outstanding in effort and there were some exceptional

performances from Rachel Parker who scored 15.7 on floor, Gemma

Matthews and Olivia Convery who scored 15.7 on vault, Harrison

Blackman who did well on floor with 15.5 and Tallulah Saunders who

also did well on vault by scoring 15.35.

This led to the U14 Mixed Team gaining first place and the U19 Girls

Teams taking second. The U14 Mixed Team has now qualified to go

to the National Finals in May while the U19 Girls missed out by less

than two points. Congratulations All!

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge 2017

On the 7th November, the Maths department invited students from Years 10 and 13 to sit the UKMT Junior

Maths Challenge. The Maths Challenge is a national competition that encourages mathematical

reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting

problems. Although it is a multiple choice test, it is very, very tough!

Over 120,000 pupils from across the UK sat the Senior Challenge and in order to get Gold, students have

to be in the top 6% of the top 60% students nationally. This year we had two students that secured Silver

and so congratulations go to Gaurav Pant and Brandon Tollan. Gaurav also managed to get the ‘Best in

School’ award which is a fantastic feat given he is only in Year 10 and it is predominantly students in Years

12 and 13 that sit the challenge.

Pupils at Chalfonts Community achieved: 2 Silver and 8 Bronze certificates in this year's Senior Challenge

which is brilliant news as we only achieved 2 certificates the year before.

Taster Day Thursday 1st February – Langley Campus

A group of our Year 11 students visited the Langley Campus, which is one of three campuses under the

Windsor Forest Colleges group. Students had previously registered an interest in a variety of courses.

They were shown around the campus and experienced sample lessons. The facilities look new and very

well equipped. The tutors who delivered the taster sessions made them interesting, fun and

informative. Students were told about the courses, how they were assessed, entry levels and were

shown around the learning areas.

Students were introduced to practical tasks. In Carpentry they created an ‘end halving joint’, in Hair &

Beauty they perfected French plaits, fishtail braids and the technique of blow drying hair. In Health &

Social Care students learnt the importance of monitoring patients. They took a temperature and recorded

the results, took blood pressure readings and used a stethoscope to monitor heart rates. Students had a

go at plastering. They were also instructed on the basics of motor vehicle maintenance.

We enjoyed a buffet style lunch which was prepared and served by students on the Catering and

Hospitality course. Towards the end of the day we regrouped and lecturers who had delivered the sessions

were on hand to answer further questions. Some of our Year11s used the opportunity to complete appli-

cation forms and wereoffered conditional places for September.

It was a very enjoyable and informative day. It was extremely useful to gain an insight into the different

courses and to be able to ask the lecturers questions.

It was great to see some of our ex-students around the campus obviously enjoying college life and the

vocational courses on which they have enrolled.

We are very grateful to the admissions team at Langley campus for arranging the ‘Taster D.ay’ and for

making us all feel so welcome.

Sixth Form NewsMartyn Way - Leader for sixth form

Year 11 Sixth Form Taster Day

On Thursday 1st February, 187 students from Year 11 took part in a 6th Form Taster Day. They chose 5

different subjects and attended those lessons i to assist them in making their post 16 choices.

Comments from the feedback forms included the words: ‘fun, interactive, informative, entertaining,

enjoyable, interesting, practical and well presented.

Some of the other comments were:

“It was good to see what each of the subjects I’m interested in would be like”.

“It was an enjoyable day that helped me to decide what I want to do next year”.

“It was very different from normal school and different from what I expected it to be”.

“We were treated more like adults and it was more interactive”.

“I liked the Business session because it showed me what I would be doing in the 6th Form. I enjoyed the

practical we did in the lesson.”

“I was informed on what the course would include but also got to do activities. I really enjoyed looking at

what previous students had done in Media Studies”.

“English was very engaging and extremely interesting. I was intrigued by the topics we will cover in 6th

Form.”

“I liked doing the Art task with pen and ink and the designing task in Product Design”.

“My favourite sessions were Performing Arts and Business BTEC . I liked the lessons and the teacher

explained the subject properly and gave good advice about taking it.”

“Fine Art was interesting and informative and it gave you a real feel of the fun and passionate side of that

subject.

“Business and Economics and Maths were interesting and the teachers kept us intrigued”.

“Engineering and Product Design were interesting and engaging”.

“Chemistry and Biology were fun lessons that were very informative”.

“Performing Arts was a lot of fun and very active. You had complete control over your performance”.

“Psychology brought up a lot of interesting dialogue and clear cut information about the subject and gave

a presentation that made us think about it afterwards”.

Well done to all the staff and students who worked hard to

make the day a success.

The next step in the 6th Form process is a Year 11

Progression Interview. Your son/daughter will have an

interview with one of the senior leaders to discuss plans for

their post 16 education. Students will receive an interview

date/time before half term and interviews will start the week

commencing 19th February and continue for 3 weeks.

Offers of a place in the 6th Form will be sent out in March/

April.

We would welcome donations of PE kit that students have grown out of or no longer need. This

includes old trainers and football boots too.

The PE department need as much spare kit as possible. It’s extremely useful for when students

forget to bring theirs in. We can then give them spares to participate.

The Chalfonts Community College is working in partnership with School Lettings Solutions to

utilise our facilities during evenings, weekends and school holidays, creating a community

network with clubs and groups within the area.

SLS have a dedicated School Leisure and Sports Manager who is responsible for taking bookings

of the facilities, ensuring that the main focus for school staff is pupil attainment and day-to-day

responsibilities.

Lost PropertyThere is still a lot of ‘lost property’ being generated – please encourage students to look after theirbelongings – especially items of PE kit.

All named lost property is returned to its owner via e-mails to the students’ tutor, so please name anything that is likely to get ’lost’. Un-named lost property is put on the table in the corridor outside the medical room for anyone to claim and is recycled after a couple of weeks as there isn’t any storage space for the quantities of items received.

Use of the Medical RoomReminder for students that the medical room is open at break and lunch-time for students to ‘Drop-In’.It is only open during and between lessons for accidents and medical emergencies.

Medical ConditionsIf your son or daughter are diagnosed with any medicalconditions, or are prescribed any medication that they may need during the day, please contact Miss Romney so that the information can be recorded.

Medical Time-Out cardsStudents diagnosed with a medical condition, which may necessitate them leaving a lesson, are issued with a Medical Time-Out card so that they can leave the lesson, without having to explain the rea-son to the teacher and with as little disruption as possible to the rest of the class.

Most students issued with these use them very responsibly but last term a small minority abused their use of them.

If your child is issued with an M T-O card, please will you remind them that they need to use it sensibly as they are issued for their benefit. i.e. they don’t need to explain to each teacher why they need to leave the room.
