The Chantry School Newsletter Dear Parents/Carer As we enter our last week of term the school is buzzing with activity. Most notably is our School Production of We Will Rock Youthat is taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week. A production such as this is a huge commitment from eve- ryone involved of course – so why do we do it? The best answer to this is why wouldnt we’? It is these sort of occasions that become life changing events for young people, and they will always remember their involvement and the development they gain from this production. I am always hugely im- pressed by the talent on display amongst the young people, and who knows where they will take those tal- ents in the future? If you are able to attend the production please contact the office for tickets. It promises to be a great show. Alongside the production this week we are hosting our Pyramid Schools net- ball finals, and our Young Leaders have been active all term in supporting a whole range of sports events for prima- ry age pupils, including football, gym and orienteering. We also host an American Concert Band on Wednes- day, and are running a News ViewsPlaywriting competition. All of these activities, just in one week, add im- measurably to the richness of education in its widest sense, and illustrate the thriving community that exists at the school all year round. We do, of course, work hard in the cur- riculum too! Our Y11 pupils in particular are preparing intensively for forthcom- ing examinations. We have been work- ing to support them in this, and my thanks to all the parents who came to our Revision Eveningon how you can support pupils at this stage in their edu- cation. We have also brought a motiva- tional speaker into school to help Y11 focus their energies in the right direction and this week we are providing a Revision Masterclassfor selected pu- pils. We endeavour to prepare pupils as thoroughly as possible, but there is no doubt only one person can really do the work: the pupil. At this stage, all our pupils should be working hard at home and have a firm revision schedule. We continue to support all the way to the end, including Easter Revision School, but now pupils must grasp the hard work ethic for themselves to secure success. I am delighted to be able to pass on the good news that as a result of last year s hard work by pupils and staff alike, the school was recognised for its good work with its pupil premiumpupils. We were the only secondary school in Worcester- shire to win an award from the Depart- ment of Education for the progress of this cohort of pupils. The prize was a small cash sum, which we will be using to develop small projects to keep that success sustainable. Finally, my thanks to all our staff, pupils and parents for all the hard work and commitment both inside and outside the classroom that enable our community at The Chantry School to continue to thrive. Dear Parents/Carer

As we enter our last week of term the school is buzzing with activity. Most notably is our School Production of ‘We Will Rock You’ that is taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week. A production such as this is a huge commitment from eve-ryone involved of course – so why do we do it? The best answer to this is ‘why wouldn’t we’? It is these sort of occasions that become life changing events for young people, and they will always remember their involvement and the development they gain from this production. I am always hugely im-pressed by the talent on display amongst the young people, and who knows where they will take those tal-ents in the future? If you are able to attend the production please contact the office for tickets. It promises to be a great show.

Alongside the production this week we are hosting our Pyramid School’s net-ball finals, and our Young Leaders have been active all term in supporting a whole range of sports events for prima-ry age pupils, including football, gym and orienteering. We also host an American Concert Band on Wednes-day, and are running a ‘New’s Views’ Playwriting competition. All of these activities, just in one week, add im-measurably to the richness of education in its widest sense, and illustrate the thriving community that exists at the school all year round.

We do, of course, work hard in the cur-riculum too! Our Y11 pupils in particular are preparing intensively for forthcom-ing examinations. We have been work-ing to support them in this, and my thanks to all the parents who came to our ‘Revision Evening’ on how you can

I am delighted to be able to pass on the good news that as a result of last year’s hard work by pupils and staff alike, the school was recognised for its good work with its ‘pupil premium’ pupils. We were the only secondary school in Worcester-shire to win an award from the Depart-ment of Education for the progress of this cohort of pupils. The prize was a small cash sum, which we will be using to develop small projects to keep that success sustainable.

Finally, my thanks to all our staff, pupils and parents for all the hard work and commitment both inside and outside the classroom that enable our community at The Chantry School to continue to

Goodbyes We have said a very sad farewell to Mrs Roz Shipley this term. Roz was our Learning Mentor and had worked at The Chantry for almost 17 years. She will be missed very much by staff, pupils and parents alike, but we all wish her the best of luck in her new venture. Mrs Lisa Richardson (who was a Teaching Assistant here) has been appointed to this post. We send her best wish-es in her new duties.

Just after Christmas we said farewell to Mrs Pauline Oliver who was the Catering Manager in the dining room. Mrs Oliver had been here for approx. 20 years.

Mr Glenn Furlong has taken over as the Catering Manager and we send him best wishes in his new post. Glenn has introduced some new menus in the dining room and would like to know how they have been received by the pupils. He said he will circulate a questionnaire to the pupils to be completed in form time.

We are also saying farewell this Easter to three more members of staff. Mr Steve Phipps, Assistant Headteacher and SENCo is moving on to be Vice Principal at a school in Hereford. Steve has been at The Chantry School for almost six years. We would like to thank him for all the many and varied roles he has under-taken and we will miss his input around the school. Mrs Tammy Pearman (ICT teacher) and Mr Alex Corbett (Second in English Dept) are also moving on to pastures new. We send all good wishes to them.

News from the LLC In February, a representative from The Blue Cross animal charity gave a talk in the library to a small group of children. The emphasis was on how The Blue Cross helped animals in World War 1. She highlighted facts about how the charity helped French horses, dogs and pigeons through the war years. They set up hospitals, sent animal ambulances, vets, and trained soldiers. Nowa-days, The Blue Cross look after do-mestic animals and have two hospi-tals, many rehoming centres and charity shops.

World Book Day was marked by a talk by local author Karen King. She has written 120 books for all ages and was promoting her latest books for young adults - Perfect Summer and Sapphire Blue.

Both Years 7 and 9 were given a talk about how Karen became an author and what gave her the inspiration to

write.

A small group of Year 8 children have set up an English society. They are all keen readers and helped with the setting up of the stage for author visits recently.

Wednesday lunchtime, a craft club for Years 7 & 8 is held. So far, we have decorated boxes and will be making things for Easter.

Just a reminder, Homework Club is held Monday – Thursday 3.30-4.30 in the library.

Fundraising £678.21 was collected for the Christ-mas Non-uniform day. This has been split between the Brain Tumour Research Society and Miss Robin-son’s London Marathon fundraising in support of MACS, a charity sup-porting children born without eyes.

We had our Comic Relief Non-uniform fundraising day on Friday, 13th March and raised again £671.84.

Thank you to all who contributed.

Thursday 26th

March 2015

Pupils have been working incredibly hard whether a cast member, band member, dancer or part of the back-stage/technical crew on this year’s school production of ‘We Will Rock You’. They are set to have their au-dience singing along and dancing from their seats as they follow Gali-leo’s mission to find live Rock Music! It seems like only yesterday the cast had their first read through of the script and the mammoth task of making this show become a reality is finally upon us. Ms Poulter would just like to thank absolutely everyone who has contributed to the produc-tion in some way, shape or form and would like to congratulate all of the performers for giving up so much of their time, energy and patience! I hope you have all enjoyed the expe-rience and are ready for next year’s auditions?! If you were able to come along and watch the production we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did as a team to produce it. Thank you for your support.

Mrs Masters is very proud of all of the singers and musicians in the bands; they have all raised to the

challenge set by the music of Queen. We have been rehearsing for many months, don’t miss this exciting show.

Intermediate Maths Challenge

In February, 90 pupils from Year 9, 10 and 11 took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. The pupils have to work through 25 mathematical problems that cover all areas of mathematics and test their problem solving skills. Congratula-tions to Guy Sweeney (Y11), Joe Wherry (Y10) and Tom Judge (Y9) who qualified for the next round which took place on Thursday 19

th

March.

UKMT Maths Team Challenge

On March 6th a team of 4 mathemati-

cians travelled down to Wycliffe Col-lege to compete in the Regional fi-nals of the Maths Team Challenge. Emma Mumford and Ben Reader from Y8 along with Alisha Bull and Ellie Clayton from Y9 competed against 25 schools in the area. The competition was very tough but the students rose to the challenge and enjoyed the day too. Lucy Judge

Year 8 Landscape Project

Mrs Hepburn’s Year 8 pupils have had a half term opportunity to work with two Royal Horticultural land-scape architect’s on a possible de-sign for the area by the Café de la Vie. The five groups learned about design planning, plant mood maps, used sketch up programme for de-sign and have now constructed in 3D, and will give group presenta-tions of their design. The RHS are using The Chantry School, the 100

th

Five Star Gardening school, as a pilot D+T project to take nationally.

This living project has potential for actual development of this un-derused area with parts taken from each of the designs. Friends of Chantry have agreed to support this project.

Young Leaders (1 ) Year 10 Leaders have been run-ning a new Change 4 Life Badminton Club every Thursday after school. Thanks to the hard work of a few Sports Leaders, pupils in Year 7 have been enjoying Badminton ses-sions each week. Joe Wherry and Jamie Hammond, under the guid-ance of Alex Randall have been leading and organising the sessions. Well done.

2 ) Sports Leaders have been return-ing to their Primary schools to deliver sporting activities, so congratulations to the following Leaders : Zac Marsh, Chris Davies and Johnny Brooks : Football at Broadheath. Hayley James : Netball at Broadwas and Archie Jones and Harry Sarkar : Change 4 Life activities at Martley.

3 ) At the beginning of February,The Chantry hosted another KS2 Indoor Football Tournament just for girls. The Rebecca Lloyd Shield competi-tion is becoming one of the favourite events. Without the help of the Young Sports Leaders who officiat-ed, scored, team managed, and or-ganised, this event couldn’t have taken place. Thank you

4 ) One of the biggest festivals took place in February when teams from all our Pyramid schools took part in a Football tournament for Years 3 and 4 and also Years 5 and 6. The Young Sports Leaders readily volun-teered to help run the competition. All the refereeing, scoring, warming up, organising, talent spotting and photography was done by the Sports Leaders from Years 8-11.

5 ) All the new Young Sports Lead-ers in Year 8 have had the opportuni-ty to receive specific training for ac-tivities delivered by them at the Win-ter School Games. Well done to Charlotte Boyle and Ellie Layland for Netball. Tommy Fouweather, Luke Pycock and Will Higgins for I. Z. Bas-ketball. Isabel Jakeways, Josh Bax-ter and Max Bloomer for Futsal and Millie Fern and Olivia Guise for Quick Sticks Hockey. Clover Aps and George Mitchell received training for Change 4 Life activities which they will be able to deliver later in the year.

6 ) This month Young Leaders have also been fortunate to receive train-ing from National Governing Bodies in sports and then officiate at festi-vals later the same day : Josh Bax-ter, Sophie Bray, Archie Jones, Harry Sarkar, Kit Chilvers and Oliver Ransford for Tag Rugby. Clover Aps, Ellie Layland, George Mitchell, Geor-gia Bates and Joe Wherry for Mini Tennis.

7 ) Young Leaders as Ambassadors for Sports : The Chantry was select-ed to nominate 2 Young Sports Leaders who were deemed worthy of Ambassador status for the Worces-tershire Winter School Games. Their role included escorting the Droitwich Spa Mayor and other guests at the Games and to promote the role of Young Leader to the VIPs. Georgia Bates in Year 9 and Alex Randall in Year 10 received certificates and special Ambassador t-shirts for filling this role.

8 ) Congratulations to the Year 9 pupils together with the Young Lead-ers who helped to officiate at the Sports event with The Panathlon As-sociation. It was remarkable to see how well they worked with children who need so much care to enjoy sport. They helped to organise and deliver New Age Kurling, Poly Bat, Boccia and Table Cricket. The Lead-ers were, Emily Day, Ryan Hall, So-phie Bray, Ella Cashion, Drew Ban-ner, Ellie Lee, Alice Crump, * Billy Millington, Georgia Bates, Izzy Mar-tin, Charlie Coombs, Hermione Dunaway, Nyah Millward, Tom Pearce-Mason, Ellie Clayton, James Francis, Jasmine Mortimer, Tom Judge, Dan Juckes and Harry Sarkar.

*Billy Millington was spotted earlier this month at the Winter Games Bad-minton finals and was invited to play Badminton in practice session with the Worcester development squad. Mrs Simmonds

The Worcestershire Win-ter School Games 2015

On Tuesday 3rd

March 2015, several Chantry pupils took part in the Winter School Games. Hosted at Worcester University, they were the regional finals for a number of sports.

Lots of pupils were competing in vari-ous sports, including new age kurl-ing, football and sports hall athletics. Meanwhile, the Young Leaders were helping to referee, score and keep time in events ranging from quick sticks hockey to inclusive zone (wheelchair) basketball.

The day started off with an opening ceremony, in which a handful of competitors read out oaths and we were greeted by the captain of the British Paralympic Football Team. Everyone then split up to go to their different locations for the day.

Overall it was great fun and whilst no medals were brought home, every-one who attended the event had a great day out and had done very well to get this far in the first place.

by Will Higgins Y8 Young Leader

Sicily trip On the 8th of March we went to Canni-catti in Sicily on an environmental study trip to show how we help and sustain the environment around us.

On the first day we went to a local prima-ry school to see their school. It was very small and had little greenery. The main aim of the day was to get to know every-one and give everyone time to arrive at the location. The children were very nice and sung us their national anthem which was very welcoming and put a smile on everyone’s faces. Everyone involved in the project was very friendly, even if we didn’t always understand each other. We had a game of netball as the other coun-tries didn’t play it at school. It was UK vs. Turkish and it was a great bonding game and we really got to know each other, and we won. We then went to lunch and had some local delicacies which were really different but most of us enjoyed them. We drove to a local museum which had donations from the Sicilian war like weapons, costumes and drawings that taught us so much about the war. The costumes were my favourite as fashion shows us so much about history and how it has evolved; the wigs were very differ-ent to what we wear today. We then walked down the road to a church, it is so different to the churches in the UK, and it was white with elegant decorations and was about 4 times the size of the church-es in the UK. We made our way back to the hotel and had a meal of pasta and steak which was nice as we got to know everyone over the table and then we all went to sleep.

On the next day we went to their equiva-lent of a high school which was great fun as everywhere we went everyone wanted selfies and photographs with us and our instagram and phone number. It was weird because we were no different to them but being a different nationality made it completely different. We eventu-ally made it to the hall and watched the school children sing a song and perform several typical dances from each coun-try. We then went into the conference room and watched a presentation from the country and what Sicily was all about. We showed each other our presentation covering the topic of “Going green at home”. It was really interesting to see how other people tackled recycling and other issues and what the main issues they had to deal with. The main issue in Italy was rubbish and everyone was mak-ing an extra deal to recycle.

Page 4: The Chantry School Newsletter...The Chantry School Newsletter Dear Parents/Carer As we enter our last week of term the school is buzzing with activity. Most notably is our School Production

Sicily trip continued...

On Wednesday we went to a local recy-cling centre; it was very different to the UK. It was on a much smaller scale and had a lot less machinery. The bales in the UK were neat and produced very quickly, however machinery and the bales were messy and in small amounts. Pat Owen did a talk to the Italian news and we saw it on YouTube, even if it was translated into Italian. One of the two brothers who founded the centre ex-plained how all the machinery worked and how important it was to Italy to recy-cle. They are the worst for recycling in Europe and they need to improve it, one step at a time. We then went to an art centre where there was art that was dif-ferent; it had a different interpretation to what we normally see in the UK.

Overall the trip was a great experience both for experience and enjoyment. I learned a lot about eco and Sicily itself. The sights were tremendous with every building a stone yellow and wind turbines everywhere you turned. I really benefited from it and it inspired me to do more to-wards eco and the environment.

Ski trips 2015 We have had two extremey success-ful ski trips to Austria this year. The Upper School trip was to Badklein Kirchheim at half term and the Lower School trip to Mayrhofen during March.

Next year’s trips are to the Italian Dolomites during February half term for Years 10 and 11 and we are re-turning to Mayrhofen for the Lower School trip. Letters have already been issued for the Upper School and will be given out this week for the Lower School. If you have any queries about the trips please con-tact Mrs Hayes or Mr Day

Upper School Ski trip by Hannah Baylis It was the last of my ski trips, but it will probably be the most memora-ble.

I have been on four out of five of the ski trips that have been on offer dur-ing my career at The Chantry School, but this one, my last one, would have to be my favourite even with the unfortunate absence of Mr Day.

There are so many reasons that sup-port my statement of it being my fa-vourite; the slopes, the accommoda-tion, the teachers and the people that went. My skiing improved greatly as well!

Our group’s instructor was great as he didn’t make things too easy for us and successfully put up with all of

our ramblings in the gondola. We even went as far to have a gondola karaoke by the end of the week to cheesy chart-toppers with him.

The morning ski prayers and Seat of Day taught us all about so many in-teresting facts, particularly for all the kids that sat at the back of the bus. Mr Day would have been so happy to have heard the ski song ‘Skiing all over the world’. Mrs Doyle led the Chantry Zumba at the disco.

The quiz night was hysterical and everyone was crying with laughter at the sight of Joe’s very serious cat-walk pout and the pizza night got eleven people around a table meant for six. We also went swimming and bowling.

Lower School Ski trip by Sister Clare (Mrs Edwards Hands together, eyes closed. So here it is, our Saturday prayer The final words of Sister Clare. Back home to England we have come For all our skiing is now done. We remember all the kids with us, Some who are fine and some who make a fuss: There's George and George and Will and Will, James and Alisha, Joe, Joe, Eddie Gill, Ella and Emily and Emily and Ed, Tom, Jake and Tom who's known as Sid instead. Emma and Ellie, Moneeca and Dan, Zanny and Nisha and Johnnie who can be trusted to lose stuff, passport and all. There's Rosie and Charlotte, how many more names to call? We've Hannah, and Oli and Oli and Clover, Luke, Alex, Alice and Henry Dover. We've got Abi Paley and Issy Martin, There's Allan, Lewis, Gabe and our Jasmine. And now for the staff, well there's Ian and Matt and Gretta and Clare. I think that is that. So on our return back to The Chantry We give thanks and praise for our holiday to ski. So we've all had our laughs, and all had our fun and now that our ski trip is finally done, Dear Sister Clare will take a bow out. Though few will know what she is all about. No more prayers for a year will she write. She may see you on the next Munich flight. And now that it's over, the last thing to say, Three cheers for us all, hip

hip hooray, hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray Amen. The Chantry School

Extra curricular

Worcester Rowing Club

Chantry pupils have been recording great success in rowing recently. A number of our pupils are members of Worcester Rowing Club and compet-ing at a high level, including recent events over the Olympic rowing course at Eton Dornay. The J14+ crew including 2 Chantry students (Johnnie Martyn-Smith and Ryan Hall) finished 12

th out of 42, whilst

the J15 crew with 4 Chantry pupils (Johnnie Martyn-Smith, Cameron Masters, Nat Colehurst and Alex Hales) came in 28

th out of 40. Well

done to all the competitors. Ryan Hall deserves an extra mention due to his selection for the West Mid-lands squad. WRC are recruiting new rowers, so interested pupils should either approach the club di-rect or speak to one of the rowers in school. Best wishes to all for future competitions and success.

Ginetta Scholarship

Cameron Roberts (Y11), Karting graduate, who was runner-up in last October’s Ginetta Junior Scholar-ship, will make the move into cars full time this year in the popular Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion-ship support category after agreeing a deal with race winning squad Total Control Racing.

Congratulations to you all and we look forward to hearing of your fur-ther achievements.

Parking at the Sports Hall

We have been monitoring this and are seeing that it is increasingly cha-otic some mornings. If you drop off pupils in the morning please could you not park in allocated spaces ad-jacent to the sports hall as our staff are unable to park properly. Please drop off on the roadside and move off as quickly as possible so as not to clog up the system. Your cooperation is much appreciated.

Physical Education- Newsletter Information - Easter 2015

Spring term

With the start of this term and with the lighter nights returning team fixtures have returned and our recent performances have continued to be very pleasing again for both the boys and girls teams. The run up to Easter has been quite busy with League games and friendly final fixtures needing to be played.

A useful reminder for squad members is that it is essential that you ensure that you sign up for fixtures at Friday break times the week prior your fixtures and that you also check the whiteboard information which needs to be relayed to parents/carers. This has tended to work well this last term.

Congratulations are given to the following student(s) for their sporting achievements and honours gained this term:

Tom Bull- County Rugby (North Midlands) reselection.

Alex Hales, Nat Colthurst, Ryan Hall and Johnnie Martyn-Smith for their recent fine performances in the Rowing Regattas outside of school.

Y9 House matches : Boys (Basketball) and Girls (Netball

As always, in some greatly contested matches with a lot of action and team ethic Bredon started to arise in the Basketball with the boys! Morgan James and James Francis were the obvious start players in this match. The game ran smoothly with alight bit of conflict and confrontation, but overall the teams were doing well. However, outside it was much of the same story: Bredon were doing great!! A great day for Bredon, overall! Well done.

Netball

Netball has once again been very popular this term with over 45 attending each week. It has been great to see some new faces giving netball a go! Panathlon Challenge On Wednesday 25th February, young leaders at The Chantry School, trained by The Panathlon Association organised and delivered a range of sports including polybat, new age kurling, boccia and table cricket. Chadsgrove School attended and were divided into teams taking part at each event. Young leader Dan Juckes said “We are very grateful for the opportunity to learn new sports and to teach them to such amazing young people – it’s been an eye opening experience”. Local Archery Paralympian Mel Clarke was guest on the day, inspiring and working closely with the young people. The young leaders were true role models and have worked exceptionally well with the young people from Chadsgrove School. This event has helped our young leaders build their awareness of disability and has allowed the school to work collaboratively with Chadsgrove School promoting opportunities and challenges for young people with disabilities. This event will be planned again next year with the hope of involving more schools.

Years 3 and 4 Dance Festival 2015

On the 4th of February, Young Leaders from Year 8 took part in the Years 3 and 4 Dance Festival at Sport

Martley. This time it was a nice break from being the leaders, as all we had to do was join in with the fun and

games, making sure that everyone had a good time. In the morning session four primary schools came and were

split into groups, each group was guided by a dance professional, had roughly three Young Leaders in it and

contained about 30 children. Each group was then dispatched in the first half of the session to learn either: The

Maori Haka, street dancing or cheerleading; if you’re wondering why only three dances are named, it is because

two groups combined to make the haka even more spectacular! After learning all the moves and putting together

a short sequence, the groups swapped and learned another group dance that would be performed in front of

everyone else at the end. The end result was some cool street dancing, some acrobatic cheerleading and a truly

formidable haka! Great fun for everyone.
