Hope in Unexpected PlacesA grey house, ivy curling up the wall.Cracked windows with tatty rags for curtains Water drips off like tears, forgotten and broken.Wind sings a sorrowful song down the blackened chimney and through the hollow corridorsA dead, weed-choked garden, the swing, once colourful and swaying happily to the sound of laughter, the paint now pealing, the sound is a rusty creak This house was once was full of love, now sombre.Hoping for someone to love it again
A young girl in tatty grey ragsdirty cheeks streaked with tears, forgotten and brokenher matted hair like brambles. She used to play and laugh, she was once full of love, now sad, hoping for someone to love her again. She sees a rotten gate and stops where others would pass by,because she sees through the appearance, to the truth underneath. She pushes it and enters the garden.Instead of the weeds she sees where flowers would growShe sees a home where the broken house isShe sees a kindred spirit. Then she spies the swing
The girl walks over and slowly sits on it, red rust covered over the peeling red paint. She gently touches it fondlyThe sits and holds the sides and steps back slowly, then starts to swing.A loud creak sounds in complaint, but the sound is covered by her laughterThe squeaks join in with her gleeback and forth back and forth, laughing and creaking together
As she swings she looks at the house and sees how it could be again,Caught in a day dream, vivid pastel colours explode, flowers grow, curtains mend. She climbs off the swing and walks to the doorThe colours fade but stain her mind with memory. She strokes the wood and imagines. She feels at home.
The house hears her laughterand sees the tatty rags transform into a sky blue dressThe sun comes out and fills the garden with colour again.
As the girl leaves she finds a small signdiscarded near the gate and picks it up.Rubbing the dirt away, she smiles and hangs it on the gate.
Hope Cottage.
