Can I have a Witness!!!
By The Rev. Janet Wheelock
This is a popular pulpit cry in the more
evangelical, perhaps Pentecostal, forms of
worship. Somebody please stand up and
tell the story of how they were created,
wandered far from obedience and
wholeness, were rescued by the loving, disciplined spirit of
Christ, and now are a new creature.
Can I have a Witness!! I have been spending a lot of time with
you, people of St. James. Sunday mornings, Holy Week and
Easter, one-on–one meetings, committee meetings, events. Over
and over I keep hearing the story of people called, called to
worship, called to serve, called to glorify the God who made our
lives possible. One in your midst told me: “Years ago, in the
middle of a divorce, I was driving to my Presbyterian Church and
spontaneously turned the car around as I passed the Episcopal
Chapel. I went in just as the priest was saying: “We are a
gathering of angry and hurt people.” I knew I was home, that I
could be who and where I was at this church. That was 45 years
ago”.
The role of priest is one of Witness, writes author Lewis-Anthony
in a book about radically rethinking the Episcopal Church. We
tell what we see and hear in Holy Scripture, in the traditions, and
in the life of the community as you all live out the faith in the
world. Here in this brand, spanking new Easter season, let’s have
a Witness! We will be hosting a History of St. James Event, come
and tell your story, and listen to what has gone before so together
we can plan for a Resurrection Future.
“Tuesdays With Morrie”
Presented by La Jolla Theater Ensemble
By John Tessmer
Please join us in the Van Schaick Room Saturday
evening, May 10th or Tuesday evening, May 13th (or
both nights!) for a staged reading of “Tuesdays with
Morrie.” Both performances begin at 7:30pm. No
tickets or reservations required; admission is by a
suggested donation of $10-15, with proceeds going to
the Lawrence H. Waddy Scholarship Fund here at St.
James and San Diego Hospice....
“Tuesdays With Morrie” captures the re-kindled
friendship between sociology professor Morrie
Schwartz and his former student, Mitch Albom, as
Morrie's life winds down. Morrie was first introduced
to the public through a series of appearances with Ted
Koppel on "Nightline," and subsequently became
further known and loved through Albom's book, his
stage play, and a TV movie, all entitled "Tuesdays
With Morrie." Don't miss this special offering, with La
Jolla Theatre Ensemble's Artistic Director John
Tessmer —a long-time member of the St. James
family— as Mitch, and one of San Diego's greatest
actors and treasures, Jonathan McMurtry, as Morrie.

Lunch Bunch May 21st at 12noon
Come and welcome our new Interim Rector, the
Rev. Janet Wheelock, as the speaker at our May
Lunch Bunch gathering. She will be focusing on
decision-making and how we can learn to listen to
the Spirit when we are wondering which path to
take. It will be exciting to meet her at this informal
get-together, and to hear her perspective and point
of view on such a significant topic.
She has over twenty years’ experience in helping
individuals, groups of people, and whole parishes
to enhance their ability to discern more clearly by
opening their minds and hearts to the wisdom of
the Spirit.
Make sure you reserve a place at the table for this
important event by signing up after church services,
contacting the website, or calling the office by 4pm
on Monday, May 19 at the latest. Lunch (catered by
Girard Gourmet) is $9.00.
By Stan Bishop
My name is Stan Bishop. I have
volunteered to head the subcommittee
on military outreach at St. James.
My wife and I joined the parish in 2011,
after moving from the San Francisco Bay area where we
were members of St Timothy’s Episcopal Church in
Danville for 17 years. I am a former Naval Officer, having
served on active duty for 5 years. I did 2 combat tours in
Vietnam, and was stationed in Coronado between those
tours. I later spent 5 years in the active reserves. I had a
successful corporate career in Sales Management, and
wanted to give back to help the men and women who
currently serve in the active-duty military.
There are a number of initiatives that we will start
shortly, but first we need some information and help
from all of you in the parish:
1. Let me know if you are a veteran
([email protected]), and give me your contact
information (Name, phone, e-mail).
2. Let me know if you want to serve on this
subcommittee ([email protected]) of Church &
World Ministries. Anyone interested is welcome.
3. If you have a son or daughter serving on active-duty
currently, please let me know their contact
information, as well as yours.
Some of the Initiatives we plan on doing:
1. Gathering donated smart phones and Kindles and
other e-readers from the parish, and sending them to
people serving on active-duty.
2. Putting together donated needed items (i.e. toiletries,
soaps, etc.), and sending them to people serving on
active-duty.
More to follow on this in a few weeks!
Please let us know your needed information, and your
interest in helping in this work.

Thank you from the Flower Guild
By Beverly Boynton
The Flower Guild would like to thank
and acknowledge everyone who
helped beautify the church for Palm
Sunday and Easter!
We especially thank:
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful
contributions and efforts. The two pedestal
arrangements below the railing were taken to the
VA Hospital Chapel after our services on Easter
Day.
The Flower Guild would also like to thank
everyone who made a contribution to the Flower
Fund for Easter. Without these
donations, we would not be able
to do all that we do; your gifts
are very much appreciated.
Thank you so much!

REMODEL UPDATE;
LEAD PAINT ISSUE
We are repairing or replacing all of the wooden
windows in the VS room and Sunday school
classrooms as part of the Church’s exterior
restoration project. We have gotten the required
permit from the City of San Diego to do this
work. The work is expected to last from about mid-
April to midsummer.
A mandatory survey of the premises disclosed that
paint on the window frames, sills and sashes
contains a modest amount of lead, which will be
removed and replaced by non-lead paint. Because
of the intermittent use of our building, we are not
legally required to make the disclosures that an
apartment building, a child-care facility or a school
must make. Nevertheless, we are taking the
extraordinary measure of informing the staff and
other users of the Church of the presence of lead
paint in the windows.
After a competitive bid process, we chose
Cornerstone Design and Remodel (CDR), a licensed
CA contractor, to do the window work. CDR is
experienced and is certified by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency for projects
where lead paint is present. CDR has assured us it
will comply with all safety requirements of the City
of San Diego and the EPA for the removal and
disposal of lead paint. As a precautionary measure,
CDR will post notices near the affected areas, even
though neither they nor we are legally required to
do so.
Should you have any questions please contact John
Norris at 619-954-9479. We have posted additional
information on the Church’s website. The Church
office also has a limited number of EPA brochures
that provide general information on lead paint
issues. The brochures are also available on the EPA
website at http://www.cpsc.gov//PageFiles/121915/

maternity leave until June 1st.
Tye Barber will be the Interim
Youth Minister during her
maternity leave. Tye can be

of our worship? Then become an acolyte! We invite all
youth in grades 3 – 12 to join the acolyte team. Acolytes
generally serve one Sunday each month on a
day that is convenient for you, and we work
around sports seasons and other family
commitments. Our next orientation and
training session will be Sunday, May 4 at
11:15 – 12:30 in the church. Both new and
experienced acolytes should attend if
possible. For more information or questions,
please contact Rebecca and Ian Williamson, acolyte
coordinators, at [email protected] or 858-395-1236.
Children’s Ministries
By Polly Fluharty
Children’s Ministries explored the quiet time of Lent.
One of the ways we explored the idea of quiet time was
by burying “Alleluia”. We made a colorful Alleluia
banner, and on the Sunday before Lent we wrapped it up
and put it in the corner of the Children’s Chapel. This
helped us to remember: Lent is a quiet, thoughtful time.
We hope you saw our beautiful banner on Easter Sunday!
Miss Gabby’s class, 3rd -5th grade, also practiced quiet
meditation before starting their lessons during Lent. Out
of this thoughtful work, the children created their own
prayer together. They brainstormed and worked to create
a prayer that represented them. They wanted to share the
prayer with the members of St. James:
Dear God,
Help us go without the things we want and let go of our
worries.
Help us to give other people hope by showing our faith
through love.
Help our network of people (family and friends), take
care of Mother Nature.
Help us, your children, to see you in ordinary things,
such as Pi.
Amen.
Dear St. James Family,
As I sit here writing this little blurb, I don’t know what
to say and I have said this out loud. My 5 ½ year old son
answers me, saying, “Just say thank you for your new job
and that you are really excited.” Yes, out of the mouths of
babes… that about sums it up. So yes—thank you for this
amazing opportunity to fulfill a calling, and I am more
than thrilled to be your new Director of Children’s Ministries.
As a member of St. James and mother of children in the program, my
concerns and hopes are the same as most of yours, and I can’t wait to hear
from each of you and to get to work creating a growing and vibrant pro-
gram. Today I heard the song, “The Greatest Love of All.” The sentiment
Whitney Houston sings for us could easily make this the new theme song for
St. James, “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let
them lead the way.”
May the Peace of the Lord be always with you.
With love and hope,
Gabrielle (Gabby) Strickler
