Dear Folks, Your little boy is now a cleric – a few brief years ago a baby in mother’s arms – a cleric. There can never be a tomorrow – just a today with Christ. Why should I want to be somebody. Fame – vanishing under the tombstones of this generation – a panted breath, an empty word. Why “be somebody.” I can be His. He is All – the beginning and the end, my life and my heart. In Him and in Him alone man’s heart can find rest and peace and love. Greedy World I despise you. Father Matt Mello Pastor, Church of the Resurrection, Lakeland Father Matt Mello was always interested in a vocation in which he could help people. After prayer and discernment, he found that vocation: ministering to people as a priest. Born in New Jersey, Father Mello moved to Melbourne, Florida, in 1974 with his family. Following high school, he attended Saint Meinrad Seminary in Indiana, where he majored in history and minored in philosophy. He later entered the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary near Chicago, and was ordained Dec. 5, 1987. In 1998, Father Mello became the pastor at Church of the Resurrection in Lakeland. During his time as pastor, the school was completed (2002) and the parish celebrated its 40th anniversary (2003). Father Mello also serves on many Diocesan committees: the Diocesan School Board; Priest Personnel Board; and the Presbyteral Council. Father Mello is also the President of the Board of Directors for Santa Fe Catholic High School, where he was the school’s pastor from 1990 to 1994. Prior to serving at Resurrection and Santa Fe, Father Mello has also served at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic and Melbourne Central Catholic High School in Melbourne. He said he enjoys his ministry because he can serve people. “It is serving the people of God and bringing them closer to Christ,” Father Mello said. “It is a great joy that no other path could offer.”

Father Chris Hoffmann Pastor, Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange Father Chris Hoffmann has served God’s people in many ways. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Father Hoffman attended Marquette University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. However, he decided instead of pursuing that field to apply for the seminary in the Diocese of Orlando, where he was accepted. He graduated from St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland, and was ordained Dec. 5, 1987. While attending the seminary there, he met with friends in nearby Norfolk, Virginia who were in the military. Father Hoffman was granted permission to join the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a chaplain candidate in 1985, and retired in 2009 from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. He has ministered to thousands while stationed in the U.S., as well as Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In addition to serving as pastor of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Father Hoffmann has also served as the high school pastor at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando and Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach; campus minister at Stetson University in DeLand; and several parishes, including Epiphany in Port Orange, Holy Redeemer in Kissimmee, St. Clare in Deltona and Blessed Sacrament in Clermont. “In addition to celebrating Sacraments, I have had many opportunities that have been possible since I said ‘yes’ to being a priest,” Father Hoffmann. “I’ve been allowed to be a chaplain in the military, work in campus ministry, asked to celebrate Mass in prisons, on high school campuses and at youth retreats. Yes, I have been blessed.”

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES Entrance Procession Entrance Antiphon Charles Thatcher

Jesus Christ has made us into a kingdom, priests for his God and Father. To him be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen

Holy Is God the Lord Brass Quartet and Organ Felix Mendelssohn

Introit for the Chrism Mass Tune: HYFRYDOL Arr. John Ferguson Text: Irene Fisher

Antiphon Roman Gradual

Lord, of old you chose a people, Called them forth to be your own, Gave them wisdom, laws from heaven, Made them servants at your throne. And you gave them oil of gladness, Holy oil to sign and bless, Sacred oil to sanctify them, Filled them with your holiness.

Psalm 28

Lord, who called that chosen people, Still we call on you today. You are rock and sure salvation; Hear us as we humbly pray. Without you we surely falter, And we fail without your grace; As we raise our hearts and voices, Hear us in your holy place. Blessed be the Lord forever, Who has heard his people's cry. Strength and refuge, shield and fortress, Who to faithful hearts is nigh. God has heard our supplication, For the love of God is strong. Now the thankful heart rejoices, And we praise our God in song. Save your own anointed people; Bless your servant Israel. Be our shepherd, tend and guide us; Lead us all, with you to dwell. Lord, renew your ancient promise, As we pledge ourselves anew: Called to worship and to service, And to love both firm and true. Repeat Antiphon

SILVER JUBILARIANS Father Esau Garcia Pastor, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Orlando Father Esau Garcia recalls the most memorable moment of his priesthood: the day he was ordained, June 21, 1987, by Pope John Paul II in Rome. “It was a beautiful experience,” said Father Garcia, who was studying with the Passionists, or the Congregation of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. One of eight children, Father Garcia grew up in Palmira, Colombia, in a devoutly Catholic family. Growing up, he aspired to become a pilot. But when he attended a retreat at the age of 17, conducted by the Marist Brothers, he felt the calling of God to the priesthood, and a period of discernment led him down that path. “I heard that the Lord wanted me to have a different kind of life,” Father Garcia said. Father Garcia earned a Licentiate of Sacred Theology with an emphasis on Biblical Theology from the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in Rome. At the request of Bishop Norbert Dorsey – the third bishop of the Diocese of Orlando – Father Garcia arrived in central Florida in 1994. Since coming to the Diocese of Orlando, Father Garcia has served at All Souls Catholic Church in Sanford and Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Deltona. He is currently the pastor at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Orlando, a community of 4,000 registered families. Always energetic, Father Garcia also enjoys playing the guitar, and has recorded four CDs – all music he has written that is dedicated to God.

Renewal of Priestly Promises

The bishop addresses the priests, who respond I am to the bishop’s questions.

The bishop then addresses the people:

Bishop: As for you, dearest sons and daughters, pray for your Priests,

that the Lord may pour out his gifts abundantly upon them,

and keep them faithful as ministers of Christ, the High Priest,

so that they may lead you to him, who is the source of salvation.

People: Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.

Bishop: And pray also for me, that I may be faithful to the apostolic office entrusted to me in my lowliness and that in your midst I may be made day by day a living and more perfect image of Christ, the Priest, the Good Shepherd, the Teacher and the Servant of all.

People: Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.

Bishop: May the Lord keep us all in his charity and lead all of us, shepherds and flock, to eternal life.

People: Amen.

Father Raymond O’Leary Pastor Emeritus, Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange Father Raymond O’Leary has seen the world as a priest, from his native Australia to Florida and onboard a number of cruise ships. Father O’Leary was born in Warwick, Queensland, Australia, into a large Catholic family. He worked on the family’s sheep and cattle property before entering the seminary in January 1956 at the age of 23. He was ordained a priest on June 30, 1962, in his home parish, St. Mary of the Assumption, in the Diocese of Toowoomba. However, Father O’Leary has spent much of his priesthood outside his home Diocese. He served in Toowoomba for a total of 16 years, as well as the Diocese of Port Pirie in Australia for five years. He volunteered to go on loan in 1984 to the Diocese of Orlando. At the completion of his three-year term in Orlando, he was encouraged by Bishop Thomas Grady to stay. He was incardinated in the Diocese of Orlando in 1989, and has served at a number of parishes: St. Joseph in Lakeland; Holy Redeemer in Kissimmee; Ascension in Melbourne; Immaculate Conception in Melbourne Beach; and finally Our Lady of Hope in Port Orange, where he was pastor from July 1, 1989 to July 1, 2008, before retiring at age 75. He continues to help at the parish as pastor emeritus. Father O’Leary has also been a registered cruise ship chaplain for more than 20 years, traveling around the world. “Fifty years of priesthood have been a wonderful experience, and I am grateful to God for His many blessings, as well as my family and friends for their support and love over the years,” Father O’Leary said.

GOLDEN JUBILARIANS Monsignor Manuel Fernandez Retired At 3 years old, Monsignor Manuel Fernandez witnessed the daunting murder of his pastor, Father Tomás Rodriguez, by Spanish rebels at his home parish. A few days later, he saw the priest’s body, lying on a table, dressed with liturgical robes. After that Monsignor Fernandez said he began dressing like his pastor and thought one day he would become a priest. Now, Monsignor Fernandez – who retired in 2010 – is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a priest. He was ordained June 15, 1962, in Astorga, Spain, nearly 12 years after joining the seminary. Monsignor Fernandez served in the Diocese of Astorga for 10 years, before he was invited by Bishop William Borders to assist with Hispanic migrants in the Diocese of Orlando. His first assignment was at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church in Eustis, followed by Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Deltona, before working with migrants in Polk County. He was appointed as pastor at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Bartow in 1983, where he served for nine years. In 1992, Monsignor Fernandez returned to St. Mary of the Lakes, where he stayed until his retirement. He remains active in ministry, serving as needed back in his homeland, in the Diocese of Astorga. In April, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI honored Monsignor Fernandez for his long and distinguished service to the Diocese of Orlando by conferring him the title of monsignor. “I have received much more from God and the parishioners than I have given,” Monsignor Fernandez said after his retirement. “I am very grateful to God, to the bishops I have served under, and to my fellow priests.”

A Vineyard Grows Choir K. Lee Scott

Amid the world’s bleak wilderness a vineyard grows with promise green, the planting of the Lord himself. His love selected this terrain, his vine with love he planted here to bear the choicest fruit for him.

We are his branches, chosen, dear, and though we feel the dresser’s knife, we are the objects of his care. From him we draw the juice of life, for him supply his winery with fruit from which true joys derive.

Vine, keep what I was meant to be: Your branch, with your rich life in me.
