T H E CH R I S M M A S S This Mass, which the bishop concelebrates with his college of presbyters and at which he consecrates the holy chrism and blesses the other oils, manifests the communion of the presbyters with their bishop. The holy Chrism consecrated by the bishop is used to anoint the newly baptized, to seal the candidates for confirmation, and to anoint the hands of presbyters and the heads of bishops at their ordination, as well as in the rites of anointing pertaining to the dedication of churches and altars. The oil of catechumens is used in the preparation of the catechumens for their baptism. The oil of the sick is used to bring comfort and support to the sick in their infirmity. Presbyters are brought together and concelebrate this Mass as witnesses and cooperators with their bishop in the consecration of the chrism because they share in the sacred office of the bishop in building up, sanctifying, and ruling the people of God. This Mass is therefore a clear expression of the unity of the priesthood and sacrifice of Christ, which continue to be present in the Church.

The Introductory Rites

Sign of the Cross and Greeting

Penitential Act

Assembly: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Isaiah 61: 1-3a, 6a, 8b-9

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn; to place on those who mourn in Zion a diadem instead of ashes, to give them oil of gladness in place of mourning, a glorious mantle instead of a listless spirit. You yourselves shall be named priests of the Lord, ministers of our God shall you be called. I will give them their recompense faithfully, a lasting covenant I will make with them. Their descendants shall be renowned among the nations, and their off-spring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them as a race the Lord has blessed.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 89: 21-22, 25 and 27 J. Robert Carroll

I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.

That my hand may always be with him; and that my arm may make him strong. R.

“My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him; and through my name shall his horn be exalted.

He shall say of me, ‘You are my father, my God, the Rock, my savior!” R.

Second Reading Revelation 1: 5-8

[Grace to you and peace] from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his Blood, who has made us into a Kingdom, priests for his God and Father, to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. All the peoples of the earth will lament him. Yes. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Lector: The Word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Luke 4: 16-21

Deacon: The Lord be with you. Assembly: And with your spirit.

Deacon: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. Assembly: Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. Assembly: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily Most Reverend John F. Doerfler Bishop of Marquette

The Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service

Bishop John addresses the concelebrants. All concelebrants please stand.

Bishop: Beloved sons, next week we will celebrate the anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred his priesthood on his Apostles and on us. Now, in the presence of your Bishop and God’s holy people, are you resolved to renew the promises you once made?

Priests: I am.

Bishop: Are you resolved to be more united with the Lord Jesus and more closely conformed to him, denying yourselves and confirming those promises about sacred duties towards Christ’s Church which, prompted by love of him, you willingly and joyfully pledged on the day of your priestly ordination?

Priests: I am.

Bishop: Are you resolved to be faithful stewards of the mysteries of God in the Holy Eucharist and the other liturgical rites and to discharge faithfully the sacred office of teaching, following Christ the Head and Shepherd, not seeking any gain, but moved only by zeal for souls?

Priests: I am.

Bishop John addresses the people.

Bishop: As for you, dearest sons and daughters, pray for your Priests, that the Lord may pour out his gifts abundantly upon them, and keep them faithful as ministers of Christ, the High Priest, so that they may lead you to him, who is the source of salvation.

Assembly: Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.

Bishop: And pray also for me, that I may be faithful to the apostolic Office entrusted to me in my lowliness and that in your midst I may be made day by day a living and more perfect image of Christ, the Priest, the Good Shepherd, the Teacher and the Servant of all.

Assembly: Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.

Bishop: May the Lord keep us all in his charity and lead all of us, shepherds and flock, to eternal life.

Assembly: Amen.

Universal Prayer

Assembly: Lord, hear our prayer

The Blessing of the Oils and Consecration of Chrism

Presentation of the Balsam and Oils O Redeemer Brian Luckner

Verses (sung as needed)

Trees by gentle sunlight ripened, gave this oil for hallowing: humbly we present it to

you, Savior of the world, our King. R. King of our eternal homeland, consecrate this living sign: may this olive bring

protection from the Evil One’s design. R. Let the unction of the Chrism make both men and women new, heal their wounded

nature’s glory, raise them to new life in you. R. At the font the cleansing waters drive away all taint of sin, when the forehead is

anointed, holy gifts come flooding in. R. Of the Father’s heart begotten, dweller in the Virgin’s womb, give us light who share

the Chrism, close for us the path to doom. R. Through the ages that await us may this be our festive day, hallowed by your

worthy praises and preserved from time’s decay. R.

Verses (sung as needed)

As when the shepherd calls his sheep, they know and heed his voice; so when you call your family, Lord, we follow and rejoice. R. With joyful lips we sing to you our praise and gratitude, that

you should count us worthy, Lord, to share this heavenly food. R.

Is not the cup we bless and share the blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare our oneness in the Lord? R.

The mystery of your presence, Lord, no mortal tongue can tell: whom all the world cannot contain comes in our hearts to dwell. R.

You give yourself to us, O Lord; then selfless let us be, to serve each other in your name in truth and charity. R.

The Concluding Rites

Solemn Blessing and Dismissal

Assembly: Amen.

Bishop: And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you for ever.

Assembly: Amen.
