Fall 2014 Lambda Gamma Epsilon, Kings Fraternity
The Chronicle THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS
By President Samuel Oakley
As we enter a new semester we once again have many goals. We look forward to a more
traditional pledging process as well as a full social schedule with all Otterbein sororities.
We have finished the paddle room and are hoping that our remaining home renovations,
a process we which began two summers ago, will soon be complete.
As we continue with our plans to progress Kings Fraternity, we are hopeful that our spec-
tacular rushing efforts this year will truly pay off. We also hope to see added benefit due
to new policies being voted upon and installed by IFC to promote an overall go Greek
mentality.
Kings has been forming stronger bonds with Club (Pi Kappa Phi), Pi Sig (Pi Beta Sigma) and we are evening starting to develop a friendship with Zeta (Zeta Phi or Rats). As the greek community strives to be seen as a necessary and beneficial facet of student life here at Otterbein, many organizations are putting differences aside to change and become greater as a community.
A WORD FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT
By Vice-President Sean Feverston
With the new academic year gearing up, Kings is firing on all cylinders. Between home-
coming preparations, fall rush, IFC involvement and house work, the nine men of Kings
manage to stay busy indeed.
I would like to thank all of our alumni brothers who were generous enough to donate to
the rent fund, it cannot be understated how instrumental your contributions were in pro-
tecting our house. It was with great pride that I watched as money poured in from across
the country to support our struggling chapter. I would also be remiss if I did not recog-
nize the effort and generosity of current Actives who gave as much as nine hundred dol-
lars each in the form of extra rent—including commuters!
This year is shaping up to be a huge year for the fraternity on many fronts and in order to
maximize the success we anticipate we need you, the alumni brothers, to get involved!
This could be as simple as dropping by the house to visit with the actives or even getting
involved with Rush and Pledging. Details are available by request to me at my e-mail
address or over facebook. I will also be releasing details via the alumni facebook page and
the website.
Our optimism seems boundless as we propel ourselves into the new year and I hope you all will share in that same excitement and commitment that we enjoy today.
My E-mail address is [email protected] and my cell is 614-572-9817. I am here as a resource to you, the alumni chapter, and I serve at the active chapter’s pleasure so please feel to reach out to me!

“Unfortunately, as it turned out, our cabin was double booked”
By House Manager Parker Ferguson
Things are going well with our housing situation, with six actives living in the house. The active chapter has been very busy
with house improvements for several months and the Paddle Room that was mentioned in previous editions is finally com-
plete! The room is being used as extra space for a comfortable place for actives to socialize with other students on campus.
We recently had the metal banister by the stair preplaced with a much better looking wooden banister and it will be stained
along with the stairs in the near future. Over the past several weeks we have put countless hours into clearing up space in
the basement that has been untouched for years. After cleaning up one of the rooms that was being used for storage, we
invited some of the girls from Tau Epsilon Mu to help us paint the walls. Thanks to everyone's talents and hard work, what
was unused space is now a desirable place to spend free time.
Whenever guests visit the house they often compliment us on the condition of the house and the quality of a completed
project. I would like to thank all of our alumni who provided us with support and generous donations last year as we
worked tirelessly to make sure that we would be able to renew our lease from the University. Thanks to your contributions
we still have a place on campus where we can live, build bonds of brotherhood, and have a great time during our years here
at college. We take pride in making the house a great place to live, hang out and foster a positive image on campus.
ADVENTURE IN HOCKING HILLS
HAPPENING AT THE HOUSE
By President Samuel Oakley
To recharge our batteries and prepare for
the new school year, we once again set out
for summer retreat. The event was
planned as a weekend retreat to a cabin in
hocking hills though it became a bit more
of an adventure.
When we first arrived at our cabin we
began to relax and enjoy each other’s com-
pany. Unfortunately, as it turned out, our
cabin was double booked so we were
forced to leave that night and head back to
Otterbein.
In the hopes of not being defeated by bad
luck we searched for another cabin while
having breakfast the next morning during
the formal retreat meeting. With a new
cabin reserved we left once again for
Hocking Hills. When we arrived we had a
grill out and began once again to relax.
While there we also enjoyed a long hike
through the Old Man’s Cave State Park.
Despite a rocky start everybody was still
able to take the time to refresh the spirit of
brotherhood while also creating ambitious
plans and worthwhile goals for the upcom-
ing semester. A slideshow presentation
with pictures will be included on the fra-
ternity website soon

THE STATE OF THE TREASURY
By Treasurer Charles Schenk
For once I can say there is good news to be heard from the realm of Kings' finances. While we are still scraping by, the fra-
ternity has been able to make all of its monthly rent and utility payments on time thanks to the overwhelming success of the
Go Fund Me alumni outreach campaign. In the end we raised over $7,000 in donations from alumni and friends of the fra-
ternity, all of which went toward alleviating the debt, saving the house and helping us finish construction on the alumni
dedicated paddle room that can now be found on the first floor. But now that we have the house, its time to keep it.
Budgeting is as strict as ever, with very few proposed projects around the house earning the right to use any of the construc-
tion or social funds. However, we do have a couple different fund-raising ideas in the works, as well as a small home im-
provement fund built into the fraternity's monthly income via rent. This is designed to both help us continue to improve the
house we (actives and especially alumni) have worked so hard to keep, as well as provide a little bit of financial stability in
case an active needs to make a payment a little late. We have also, in this same vein, stepped up the strictness with which
housing contracts are being enforced.
As most you know, the house itself is owned by Otterbein University. That being the case, individual actives living in the
house actually sign a contract with the fraternity itself, not with the college, and it is Kings Fraternity who is legally bound to
pay Otterbein. Because of this contract structure, and in light of recent events regarding ignored payment plans to the fra-
ternity and the fallout debt to the University, we have actually had formal sub-lease documents drawn up and notarized in
place of the usual, informal contracts. Hopefully, this extra level of formality and severity will both deter members from
defaulting on their housing agreements, as well as giving the fraternity an avenue to pursue any delinquent funds.
These are just some of the steps we are taking to secure both your investment as an alumni chapter in the house this past
spring, and our future as a fraternity here at 94 West Park Street. I thank you for your time and open my door to any ques-
tions anyone may have about the Kings' finances when I see you all at homecoming!

RELAY FOR LIFE RELIES ON KINGS
By Chaplain Samuel Oakley
On June 26th the men of Kings made a road trip to Cincinnati to attend the Meagan Toothman Foundation’s Annual Golf
Scramble. Despite myself usually being a player, I instead joined the other Kingsmen in monitoring the different hole-in-one
contest holes. Thanks to the beautiful weather it was a very successful event.
Along with the golf tournament sign up and participation there were also items put up for a silent auction. Due to the increase
in sponsorship from different businesses such as Disney who donated special Disney Land passes. We were able to assist in
the raising of over $12,000. Once again the money will be used to provide scholarships for people in aided learning programs
hoping to attend college, students who exemplify the mission statement of the Meagan Toothman Scholarship Foundation,
and graduate students from the University of Cincinnati .
By Chaplain Samuel Oakley
On May 2nd and 3rd Otterbein University once again
held Relay for Life. To celebrate and help spread aware-
ness, the men of Kings buzzed each of our heads. Instead
of Lambda Gamma Epsilon simply having its own table
we reached out to other organizations to try to raise more
money as a team. We paired with the Otterbein Universi-
ty Gamers Guild who brought televisions and gaming
consoles for people to take breaks from walking laps
while we provided popcorn and helped raise funds. Be-
sides selling popcorn we also held raffles all night for gift
cards to businesses such as Kroger and Chipotle. One of
these cards was kindly donated by Brother Jack Brang-
ham, alumnus.
We raised over one hundred dollars by the end of the
night. Besides our own booth we also brought attention
to other booths. The men of Kings paid to have What’s
New Pussy Cat by Tom Jones over fifteen times. Around
the seventh time it was played people began to pay to
have What’s New Pussy Cat stop playing. After enough
money was raised to change songs we were then arrested
by Zeta since they were paid to have all of us put in jail
for half an hour each. Due to our involvement, Relay for
Life ended up serving additional purposes besides raising
money for cancer research. We were able to bring various
student organizations together.
IFC CHANGES GOOD RUSHING RECIPE
THE MEAGAN TOOTHMAN FOUNDATION GOLF SCRAMBLE
By Rush Chairman Isaac “Ike” Wade
It pleases me greatly to say that Lambda Gamma Epsilon Kings Fraternity’s Fall Rushing effort is as strong as ever! We have
made some rather exciting additions to the program; both in part to IFC’s initiative to update the rushing experience for
potential new members, and because of the ever sharpening entity that is Kings.
IFC has made several changes to the Rushing process: Rho Chis have been introduced to fraternity rushing which have the
limited but important responsibility of tabling IFC event tables, also there is now an official recruitment kick-off event
known as “Dying to go Greek”. This event entails the PNMs tie-dyeing shirts and there will be a series of presentations by
the various chapters present about their own unique values to the PNMs, this way the interested freshman can know pre-
cisely which Fraternity they are interested in rushing.
There is also a wealth of purely kings related rush events. Every Tuesday the Kingsmen get together to enjoy each other’s
company. This event is open to prospectives and we would also be open to alumni to assist with rush.
If you should have any questions about the dates of these events feel free to contact Sean Feverston.

“They were hands down two of the worst knights I’ve ever seen as an ac-tive.”
By Chancellor Charles Schenk
Nothing says Kingsman like refusing to stay down, and then standing right the hell back
up. Small pledge class in the fall? Let's take another one! Let's get back one of the guys
who dropped! Because that's exactly what we did.
Spring pledging of 2014 gave rise to the activation of the newly knighted Kingsmen Broth-
ers David Parkison and Christopher Dardio. They were hands down two of the worst
knights I've ever seen as an active; chronically late, scatter brained, unsure of themselves,
and to this day I think one of them recites Jonda's letters as Tau Mu Phi. Despite how
many stupid and obnoxious things we made them do when they failed, these two refused
to ever stop, or even consider giving up on the grand goal of attaining the title of
Kingsman.
Today they are two of our finest actives, with Dardio taking the lead as fundraising chair-
man despite being new to greek life as a whole, and Parkison single handedly rushing
almost half of our current prospectives. I am very proud to be able to say they were my
first knight class as a Chancellor. Spring of 2014 was small, but persistent, and through
that diligence they found victory .
By Chancellor Charles Schenk
The fall pledging program of 2014 is look-
ing to be one of the best we've seen in
years. A combination of brilliant, honora-
ble rushing on behalf of all of the actives,
and the enactment of new IFC policies
designed to crack down on pervasive dirty
rushing practices. These things have
helped us build a rush list of over 20 pro-
spective men before the official rush sea-
son has even started.
In addition to this wide pool of interest
from freshmen men, the sororities around
campus have also begun to take notice of
our recent success. Just like in the previ-
ous two programs we are currently slated
to mix with each sorority at least once
during pledging, many of whom ap-
proached us with first pick of dates for
their programs.
Finally, I am also excited to say that after
many long and inspiring conversations
with alumni who have visited the house
since last spring, there will be several
older traditions making their way back
into the program, carefully selected to
ensure the quality, difficulty and memora-
bility of the best five weeks of these young
mens’ lives they'll never want to endure
again.
I would love to discuss the changes or
even just the program in general with
anyone interested. There will be multiple
opportunities for alumni involvement, and
if you are interested I urge you to contact
Sean Feverston our Vice-President as soon
as possible so he can get you dates. Until
then, I hope you are all as excited as I am
for the upcoming pledging season.

NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW PROMISE

SOCIAL STRIDES
Social Chairman David Parkison
This fall we have made fantastic strides in reconnecting to Greek Life as a whole, including rekindling the spark between
Kings and our sister sorority, Theta Nu. Lambda Gamma Epsilon is the smallest chapter on campus currently, but thanks to
the men in the chapter working as hard as they have been this past year we are one of the most well-known for how well we
handle the image we present to the public.
The men of Kings are constantly being requested to volunteer to do any assortment of activities across campus because of
how impressively we carry ourselves through any challenge presented to us. We are constantly being put at the front of the
group as examples of true leadership due to how much we have shown ourselves to be so fiercely loyal to our brotherhood and
for our tremendous sense of responsibility.
Because of this our connections with every fraternity and sorority have grown in enormous measure in communication, com-
panionship and good will. We pride ourselves on how well we can easily connect with any organization on campus and enjoy
the fact that we can be one of the most social chapters on campus having as few members as we do. Kings plans on becoming
even more socially involved within this next semester through interacting on a more personal level with each of the fraterni-
ties in our ever growing inter-fraternal relationships in each of the various planned Greek social gatherings. We look forward
to a fantastic year of growing social opportunities.
Keep updated on the Active chapter as well as find important dates and information so that you can stay
involved with the fraternity.
