    INTRODUCTION

    Batangas is a rich and historical place located on the southwestern part

    of Luzon in the CALABARZON region bordered by the provinces of Cavite and

    Laguna. It has 31 municipalities and 3 cities with its capital, Batangas City.

    Poetically, Batangas is often referred to by its ancient name Kumintang.

    Batangas is renowned for its the seated of the smallest volcano in the

    world and one of the Decade Volcanoes. It is also where the Taal Heritage town

    lies, a small picturesque town that has ancestral houses and structures way back

    to the 19th century.

    With its prime location near Metro Manila, it became one of the most

    popular tourist destinations. The province has many beaches and is famous for

    excellent diving spots including Anilao in Mabini, Matabungkay in Lian, Ligpo

    Island in Bauan, these areas more popularly known as Anilao, Punta Fuego in

    Nasugbu ,Calatagan, Laiya in San Juan and Sombrero Island in Tingloy.

    Batangas is also the home of the remarkable Filipino heroes dating back

    Spanish times and American times. It is also the seat of the important and

    historical landmarks such as the Southeast Asias largest church, St. Martin of

    Tours Basilica in Taal; Mabini Shrine in Tanauan; and Felipe and Marcela

    Agoncillo Shrines.

    The province is also known for its food and special delicacies and souvenir

    stuffs. Some of its delicious foods are atchara or pickled papaya, fishes like

    tawilis and maliputo, bulalo soup, lomi, the famous kapeng barako; panutsa

    and suman are some of the special delicacies of province. Batangueos were

    known for their braveness, balisong is one of the weapon or symbol of being a

    brave Batangueo.

    THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF BATANGAS

    Kumintang - Batangas is often referred to by this ancient namepoetically. It was believed that the song and dance repertoire called

    "kumintang" is of Batangas origin. Because of this, it came to be known as

    "La Provincia del Cumintang.

    Bonbon - Batangas first came to be known as Bonbon. It was namedafter the mystical and fascinating Taal Lake, which was also originally

    called Bonbon.

    Taal the term Taal was considered the name of the province beforethe name Batangas came to be known

    Batangas- The term Batangas was derived from the word batang,which is a term of the natives for the numerous logs found in the

    Calumpang River.

    HISTORY OF BATANGAS: THE GENESIS

    Before the time when the Spaniards came, mass population already

    settled in Batangas. Native settlements lined the Pansipit River, a major

    waterway. Based on archaeological findings lead by American archaeologist,

    Mr. Robert C. Fox, the province has been trading with the Chinese since Yuan

    Dynasty until the first phase of Ming Dynasty dating back 13thand 15thcentury. In

    1534, Batangas became the first practically organized province in

    Luzon.Balayanwas the capital of the province for 135 years from 1597-1732. In

    1732, it was moved to Taal, then the flourishing and most progressive town in the

    province. Early inhabitants of the province were also trading with Japan and

    India. Historians believed that early Batangueos were descendants of Bornean

    datus who sailed from Borneo to Panay as far as Taal Lake namely Datu

    Dumangsil and Datu Balinsusa. They organized the first Malay settlement at the

    mouth of Taal River. They eventually set up their own settlement in the place

    and founded the town of Taal in 1572. The towns of Balayan, Lipa, and

    Batangas were founded later.

    HISTORY OF BATANGAS: SPANISH TIMES

    When the Spanish came to Batangas, way back 1570, in the name of

    Martin de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo who are the two Spanish generals who

    explored the coast of the province on their way to Manila. They came upon a

    Malay settlement at the mouth of Taal river. By the year 1572, the town of Taal

    was founded and the construction of the convent and stone church were

    initiated later.

    Batangas was founded in 1581 which was originally composed of the

    present provinces of Batangas, Marinduque, Mindoro, Southeast of Laguna and

    even far Camarines. But due to the devastating eruption made by Taal

    Volcano, the old Taal town site was buried and transferred the capital to

    present-day Batangas City.

    Batangas was also among the first of the eight Philippine provinces to

    revolt against Spain. On August 30, 1896, it is one of the provinces placed under

    Martial Law by Spanish Governor General Ramon Blanco.

    HISTORY OF BATANGAS: SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

    During the Spanish- American War, Batangueos showed the essence of

    nationalism and bravery for the independence of the province as well as for the

    country. Some of them are Apolinario Mabini, Marcela Agoncillo and Gen.

    Miguel Malvar.

    REMARKABLE HEROES, NATIONALISTS AND PRESIDENT THAT MADE

    BATANGAS HISTORICAL

    Batangas also came to be known as the "cradle of heroes and nationalists"

    because some of the heroes, nationalists and pesident came from Batangas

    who made their names in history.

    Apolinario Mabini - also known as the sublime paralytic and Brain of theRevolution

    General Miguel Malvar - the last Filipino general to surrender to theAmericans

    Leon Apacible - was a lawyer, Judge of the Court of FirstInstance of Batangas City and a Filipino revolutionary in the 1890's

    Felipe Agoncillo - was a Filipino lawyer representative to the negotiationsin Paris that led to the Treaty of Paris, ending the SpanishAmerican War

    and achieving him the title of "outstanding first Filipino diplomat"

    Marcela Agoncillo - who made the present Philippine flag Jose P. Laurel - was the president of the Second Philippine Republic,

    a puppet state of Japan during World War II, from 1943 to 1945

    THE LEGACY OF OLD ERAS

    One of the evidences that Batangas is one of the historical places in the

    Philippines is its historical places and landmarks. Historical places became the

    legacy of old eras and these were the following:

    Taal townpresent-day town of Taal shows the small picturesque ofSpanish times with its ancestral houses of the Spaniards

    Basilica of St. Martin of Toursthe largest basilica in Southeast Asia whichis one of the religious destinations in the province. It was erected during

    Spanish times

    Mabini Shrinethe house of Apolinarion Mabini was seated at Tanauan,Batangas

    Felipe Agoncillo Shrineancestral house of the Filipino diplomat FelipeAgoncillo located at the town of Taal

    Marcela Agoncillo Shrineancestral house of the woman who is one ofthe sewers of the Philippine flag located in Taal

    Sea near Fortune Island, Nasugbu, Batangaswhere the Galleon SanDiego was sunk way back 1600s and where the treasures were found

    like Chinese porcelain,

    Japanese katanas, Portuguese cannon and Mexican coin

    CONCLUSION

    Batangasis a rich province in the Southern Luzon in terms of economy as

    well as historical facts. It is one of the interesting places to visit. To know its history

    and culture is like a throwback in its chronological time. Batangas is also known

    as cradle of heroes and nationalists. It is also the home of the brave and

    hospitable Batangueos. Batangas is also the seat of the world class tourist

    destinationthe largest and the smallest.
