    JANUARY 2009

    VOL. 10, ISSUE 1The ChurchCourier

Martin Luther said, Since it Gods na -ture to make something out of nothing,we must become nothing before Godcan make something out of us.

Adelaide A. Pollard, a 20th-centurypoet, made the same point in thehymn Have Thine Own Way :

Have thine own way,Lord! Have thine own way!Thou art the potter, I am the clay.Mold me and make me after thy will,While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Parson to Person ..2Think about it....5The Tate Family.. ....7From the Editor.. ....11

A sweet old man alwaysseemed to be in good humor. One day, a curious youngerman asked why he was alwaysso happy.

Well , the kindly man re -plied, it is because I knowwhen I get up in the morning,I have two choices. I canchoose to be happy or I canchoose to be unhappy. I tryto choose happiness each day. What did you choose thismorning? Live well, lovemuch, laugh often. See our Church Members Funny Reso-lutions on page 3.

Did you ever think of what Jesus saw as He hung onthe cross? His eyes saw His

mother, some of the disci-ples, the religious leaders who wanted Him dead, and the sol-diers who were doing their job.

But His heart saw much more! He saw the inner pain and burdenseach person bore at that moment, and all the pain and burdenseach person who ever lived and would live could bear! What an-guish! What a responsibility!

And as He hung there, he realized that most of the people werenteven aware they needed to be saved from sin! An yet, there Hehung, dying for the sins of the world, and so many were totally aloof as to what was going on right before them! Can we possibly

understand it? They were rejecting Gods help by rejecting Jesus ,His Son.

What a painful situation for our Saviour! And yet His plea was,Father , forgive them (Luke 23:34).

Forgive them, Father. They are so lost they cant understand they need to be found!

Forgive them Father. Only You can bring them peace of mind.

Forgive us , Father. We are no different from those gatheredaround the cross on that day!

As you look ahead into the new year, what do you see? Our visionisnt as clear as Jesus , so we dont know all that is ahead . But wedo know one thing: His forgiveness is free to all who want it -anytime and all the days ahead of us! Yours for claiming His ten-der forgiveness, Pastor and Sharon Webb.

OWE NO MAN ANY THING By: Gary D. Grimes

Think twice, and then thinkthrice before entering into a fi-nancial debt relationship with

friends, family or fellow churchmembers. Whether you would be

debtor or creditor you risk destroying your friendship and

relationship with the other person when you enter into adebt relationship. Heres what happens many times .

The debtor has good intentions to pay the loan back, butdoesnt for any number of reasons . The debtor may be aspendthrift. He may have financial reverses beyond his con-trol. She may loose her job. When the loan was made he wasalready in a financial tailspin.

Next, the debtor avoids his creditor. This avoidance occursin families. It occurs among church members. Close friendsbecome distant. Sometimes, both the creditor and debtorbecome enemies. Hard feelings destroy spirituality in each. Some quit attending church. Or stare daggers at each other when they should be worshipping God. What to do?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dont yieldto temptation! Stop! Dont ask family , friends or churchmembers for a loan. Stop! Dont loan money to family mem -bers, friends or church members. Dont even co -sign. TheBible in Proverbs 6:1-5 warns against co-signing.

If you want to help someone financially and can afford it giveit to them from the start. Make it a gift! Next month, more

    on Christian finances. Stay tuned!
