May 2019 Christ has risen, risen indeed! In this post-Easter season, we turn our minds, hearts and spirits toward a season of celebrating & remembering! We will be engaging in the 50 Days of Prayer, a First UMC tradition to pray for the committees, groups & ministries of the Church from Easter to Pentecost, April 21 to June 9.

SOW seeds of faith, hope & love. The First Sunday Potluck on

May 5 at 11:45 AM will be hosted by SPRC. Please bring a dish to share and enjoy fellowship with one another. Stay tuned for Forks & Fellowship Groups meeting this summer.

KNOW God. In the coming weekends, at the Church we will

share in Holy Communion and celebrate our high school graduates (May 4 & 5); celebrate special women in our lives (May 11 & 12); and remember those who died in service to our country (May 25 & 26). Guests are always invited & welcome to worship!

GROW with Jesus. Post-Easter studies continue with our Sunday

School classes & weekly small groups — get involved! Looking to connect? Talk to Rev. Cindi or Pastor Joe for more info!

GO into the world. We will continue to support Food Pantry,

Rescue Mission and our Blessing Box. In addition, there are still

many opportunities to make food, muck out basements & serve at

distribution center for flood relief. To get involved, sign-up to

volunteer at the Church Office. And give blood!

Donate Blood in Honor of Max Becker

son of Sara & Kyle Becker / grandson of Miki & Jeff Naylor Monday, May 6 from 12 PM to 6 PM (Outreach Center)

“The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.” John 20:30-31 (NLT)

As we come out of our Easter Season and have entered into our “50 Days of Prayer,” we celebrate our church, our staff, all of our members, the work they do and the love they show. At Ignite during this season, we will look at how Jesus is asking us to Live and how a Loving God prepares us to go out and serve others.

LIVING:

April 28 – Believe in Me John 20:24-31 & Psalm 149:1-5

May 5 – Follow Me John 21:1-19 & Psalm 30:1-5, 11-12

May 12 – Listen To Me (Mother’s Day) John 10:22-30 & Psalm 23

LOVING:

May 19 – Marked by a Loving God John 13:31-35 & Psalm 148:7-13a

May 26 – Sent by a Loving God John 14:13-21 & Psalm 67

June 2 – Embodied by a Loving God John 17:20-26 & Psalm 97:1-7, 9

June 9 – Empowered by a Loving God Acts 2:1-21 & Psalm 104:24-34, 35b

As we transition into summer, Rev. Cindi & I prepare to attend our Great Plains Annual Conference, we ask for continued prayers for all those who rebuild after the spring flooding, those who will travel here to help those affected recover. We pray for our Bishop and conference staff as they prepare for the work that is put before us. We pray for all United Methodists as we continue to search for ways to come together stronger than before. And we especially ask for prayers for all of you and the work that you do for God. I pray that God will reach into all our hearts and find new ways to draw each of us closer to Him.

Blessings & Peace, Pastor Joe

The journey of spiritual growth is a long one… M. Scott Peck

Following Easter, I believe that our task is to keep on keepin’ on! The spiritual disciplines that we have embraced during the Lenten season shouldn't be done; in fact, as Christians, we should always be learning and growing.

From April 27 & 28 to June 1 & 2, we will be revisiting Dr. M. Scott Peck’s book The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values & Spiritual Growth (1978) with the sermon series road less traveled. In the book, there are important themes that challenge people to embrace the divine presence in their lives. These themes fit perfectly with the Post-Easter scripture passages from the Acts of the Apostles, so let’s continue the journey together!

April 27 & 28 / DISCIPLINE: Balancing Act Acts 5:27-32

May 4 & 5 / LOVE: Defined Acts 9:1-20

May 11 & 12 / LOVE: Mystery Acts 9:36-43

May 18 & 19 / GROWTH & RELIGION: Tunnel Vision Acts 11:1-18

May 25 & 26 / GRACE: Miracles & Visions Acts 16:9-15

June 1 & 2 / GRACE: Welcoming Acts 1:1-11

See you in Church! Grace & Peace, Rev. Cindi

Please Pray Daily: Come, Holy Spirit, Come.

Transform our lives & our Church. In the name of Jesus Christ,

we pray, AMEN.

The 50 Days of Prayer is a First UMC tradition to PRAY

from Easter until the Day of Pentecost.

In 2015, we prayed for the Building Committee that was evaluating our use of the Outreach Center

at Northtown Mall, and we participated in Change the World Day!

In 2016, we again participated in Change the World Day, and our church prayed as we anticipated

the purchase of the building at 3602 16th Street on May 31 to serve as our Outreach Center.

We prepared for transition from associate pastor Rev. Aaron Duell & Rev. Seong Lee & family!

In 2018, we prayed for the move & transition of our associate pastor & family, and we prayed for a new Associate Pastor which led us to “raise

up” our own associate, Pastor Joe Krepel.

Prayer is powerful!

In 2019, we pray for our Strategic Planning & Vision Team seeking God’s Vision

for First UMC & Outreach Center!

Matthew 25:35a

A Place At the Table’s Weekend Backpack Program has been serving Columbus Public Schools since January of 2013. Our pur-pose is to provide easy to prepare meals for students at risk for food insecurity. Food Bank of the Heartland joined our effort soon after. Together we are able to provide bags of food for 272 students, K-12, each week. We purchase food for 136 students and Food Bank of the Heartland provides bags of food for an additional 136 students at no cost to us.

We are a community program based in the Outreach Center. Each Tuesday morning, volunteers meet to set out the food for that week, and at 5:30 PM that evening volunteers meet to bag up the food which will be delivered by additional volunteers to the schools on Friday morning. We have been blessed by the generosity of so many people who truly care about the young people of our community.

From the volunteers who help pick up our groceries every six weeks to the people who help unload the Food Bank of the Heartland truck each month, we can only do what we do with the help of volunteers. If you are interested in being a volun-teer or donating, please contact Denene Owens (402) 564-5077.
