IMPORTANCE

The economy is enhanced by Lahore's historic andcultural importance. Being the capital of the largest

province in Pakistan brings the city one of the largest

development budgets in the country.

Lahore is referred to as the cultural heart of Pakistanas it hosts most of the arts, cuisine, festivals, film-

making, music, gardening and intelligentsia of the

country.

Lahore has always been a center for publications,

where 80 percent of Pakistan's books are published

and remains the foremost center of literary,

educational and cultural activity in Pakistan.

Lahore also hosted the 2nd Islamic World Conference in1974.

Lahore is among those few metropolises of sub-continentwhere excessive migration takes place.

According to the 1998 census, Lahore's population was6,310,000. A 2010 government estimate now puts the

population at 10,000,000. It is ranked 25 in the mostpopulated urban areas in the world and the 8th largest citywithin the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
