Why Play G lf?

Golf is a unique all round sport which can be:

Played by people of all ages

Adaptable to fit your lifestyle

Played alone or in groups

What is golfing etiquette? The manners and customs in golf are known as etiquette. The idea

behind etiquette is to give everyone a chance to play their best,

compete fairly and have fun. Golf etiquette is a mixture of common

sense and courtesy. Every golfer regardless of experience or level

of play will be expected to abide by the same code of behaviour.

Can you play golf without joining a club? You do not have to be a golf club member to play golf - due to changes

in society and lifestyle, golf club membership is no longer for everyone.

You can ‘pay and play’ and take lessons with no commitment.

I think golf is elitist and male dominated - is this true? It may have been in the past but not anymore. Peterborough Golf is

open to everybody to come and try golf and see if you love it as much

as we do. Golf is a stimulating challenge combined with getting out

in the fresh air in pleasant surroundings. A round of golf is not only

enjoyable, it is an excellent way of exercising, as an average 18 holes

usually involves walking between three to five miles.

There are very few other sports that can provide all of the above, so it is hardly surprising that there are an estimated 1.7 million regular golfers in Great Britain.

Expansion of the city boundaries in 1929 brought

an urgent need for more municipal office space.

The centralisation of accommodation for the various

council departments had long been a discussion

point. The Council in 1904 had bought land between

Midgate and the Cattle Market (the indoor market

at Northminster now occupies part of the site) with

the intention of building a Town Hall and offices on

the Long Causeway and Midgate corner. By 1920 the

whole project was seen to be inadequate and towards

the mid to late 1920s it was proposed to build a

new Town Hall, to widen Narrow Bridge Street and

to construct a new bridge over the river to replace

the existing iron structure (built in 1872) which was

considered too narrow and unsafe.

In 1929 the Mayor’s casting vote decided that the

widening of Narrow Bridge Street should go ahead.

All the buildings on the east side taking in part of

the Cathedral’s Place Gardens helped to create the

Bridge Street we know today.

Later that year the first sod was turned by the Mayor,

Alderman Arthur Craig. The foundation stone of the

new Town Hall was laid by Prince George, Duke of

Kent, on 28 June 1929.

The architect who won the contract was Berry

Webber of London. They planned the building so

that it could take an extra storey. Council offices

in 1929 were located in Midgate, Broadway,

Queen Street, Church Street, as well as in the

Guildhall.

The new Town Hall was officially opened by

Alderman Isaac Whitsted on 16 October

1933 and the original council office buildings

attached to the west side of the Guildhall since

1874 were demolished after World War II.

The opening of the new Town Hall meant that

all Council activities could be housed in the

one building. The latter had not been the case

for nearly 50 years. A further storey to the

existing Town Hall was added about half a

century after it opened.

The interior carpentry was undertaken

by Sage Ltd of Walton, Peterborough who

specialised as cabinet makers but in

World War 1 turned their hands to building

pioneer aircraft. In fact, they were the

first aircraft manufacturers to construct

planes with enclosed cockpits.

awarded the prestigious Green Flag award symbolising

excellence in environmental activity.

Seven local schools have now achieved Green Flag status,

which is an exceptional achievement for Peterborough.

This is the highest award obtainable as part of the

International Eco-Schools programme administered in

England by Keep Britain Tidy.

In addition to a walking bus and garden club, John Clare

Primary School has installed energy saving features and

altered behaviour patterns to lower their carbon footprint

and improve energy efficiency. Their new extension has

a sedum-covered roof, recycled insulation and energy-

saving light sensors. They generate their own energy from

solar panels and are the first school in Peterborough to

use a biomass boiler.

The boutique’s team is made up of 5

team members including the owners

Melanie and Richard, there’s a variety

of services available including vertical

and laydown sunbeds, hair treatments,

luxury in store products to buy, Gel

nail’s, express up do’s, colour, cuts,

blowdry’s and they even offer free Wi-

I headed down to Bridge Street for

my appointment with Star Stylist

Heidi. Once through the doors I was

transported into a spacious nicely laid

out salon with amazing eclectic décor

mixed with a homely feel.

I opted for the restorative hair mask

from the in-store range of Moroccanoil

products, once at the basin I was given

a ‘Scrummy Towel’ which is like a

luxury paper towel, these are disposed

of after use and are biodegradable;

this eliminates the need for a

washing machine resulting in being

more environmentally friendly. After

my treatment my hair felt shiny and

moisturised, now it was time for my

‘Red Carpet Styling’ I choose a curly

blow dry followed by heated rollers

and after 30 minutes and a lot of

chin-wagging with Heidi I felt a million

dollars.

Overall I had a wonderful experience

and it was nice to go to a salon that

felt friendly and had a

FRAME YOUR EYES REVIEWWhen I was contacted by Rene’e Christopher owner of Frame Your Eyes to do a review for Semi-Permanent Make-up, I had visions of harsh blocked in eyebrows and over the top eyeliner, but when Rene’e assured me it can actually look really natural and undetectable to the eye I was intrigued, so I went on her website to find out more.

Obviously because of my brow obsession I opted for the Semi-permanent Eyebrow Recreation: Semi-Permanent Make-up (technically known as Micropigmentation) is a cutting edge beauty treatment which achieves flawless lasting colour and definition for eyebrows, lashes, lips or the eye line that will last between 1 and 3 years.

When I met Rene’e I felt instantly at ease, she was welcoming and highly professional and her hygiene standards were impeccable. She talked me through the procedure as she applied

the numbing cream to my brow area and she showed me examples of her work and asked what style I would like to go for. I wanted it to look as natural as possible so I chose the brush stroke look.

As the procedure involves tiny particles of natural and synthetic iron oxide colour pigments that are implanted 1mm below the skin’s surface using a sterile needle (similar to tattooing) I was expecting it to hurt, but I felt nothing, so its unbelievably painless. The whole procedure took just over an hour and I booked my touch up appointment for 4 weeks later. On the second day after the procedure my eyebrows started to flake slightly (totally unnoticeable) which was perfectly normal, during this time the pigmented area looked a little darker than I wanted but after my skin heals the colour will lighten by up to 30%.

After my second top up the procedure will be complete, so this is a chance to

adjust any areas of the brow you may want more filled in or extended. When I saw my finished eyebrows I was really pleased – they looked so natural and perfected in shape.

Overall I absolutely loved this treatment; my features feel enhanced and it helps to keep my brows looking there best 24-7. It’s totally waterproof and means less time getting ready in the morning. I will definitely be going back for my top up when it starts to fade!

Experience rating 10/10 (yes that’s my first 10/10 score)

About muscle We have approximately 650 muscles in our body, and they

make up roughly half our bodyweight. They muscles can

be divided into three different groups: skeletal, smooth and

cardiac.

Skeletal muscle: Produces movement, maintains posture,

stabilises joints and generates heat

Smooth muscle: Found in the walls of hollow organs

Cardiac muscle: Exists only in your heart

SummaryAn all over body ‘training’ approach would be a sensible

route to take initially. Ensure that you train each major

muscle group equally i.e. legs, chest, back, shoulders,

arms and core. Also ensure that you train them all equally

and do not over compensate one muscle group for another,

as this could create a postural imbalance.

For parts 1 and 2, previous editions can be viewed online

at www.issuu.com/the_scene_magazine

Mark Gordon

[email protected]

www.fitness2health.co.uk

So moving on from cardiovascular training and flexibility, we now move onto Muscular Strength and Endurance!

Muscular strength is the ability of our muscles to exert

a near maximal force to lift a resistance, translated this

could be lifting either a weight in the gym or lifting an item

at work or at home.

Muscular endurance requires a less maximal force to be

exerted, but for the muscle contraction to be maintained

for a longer duration ‘lifting the item many times’.

The long-term benefits of muscular strength and

endurance training are:

1. Increased bone density

2. Decreased risk of osteoporosis

3. Improved posture and alignment

4. Improved performance of sporting activities

5. Improved body shape and tone

6. Effecieint performance of daily tasks

7. Stronger ligaments, tendons and muscles to

support movement.

Our muscles need to have strength and endurance for a

number of reasons. Muscles work in pairs ‘biceps/triceps’

(front and back of arms) and if one muscle becomes too

strong and the other muscle is weaker, then our joints will

be pulled out of alignment. This could also create postural

defects and lead to injury. You may also need to target

certain muscles to compensate for the imbalances caused

through daily activities.

PART 3 - STRENGTH & ENDURANCE

Subtle rustic tints appearing amongst now tired foliage, heavy dews underfoot and that gentle, calm, winding down feeling replaces the bustle that was summer, autumn has arrived. I love this time of year!

“Wounds are not always visible” this is the strap line for The Bridge for Heroes a registered charity that offers special rest and recuperation for our serving armed forces, veteraans and their dependants.

Their aim is to provide an environment that assists early identification of post-traumatic stress disorder and other problems that our heroes face on returning to front line operations.

Mike Taylor the founder of The Bridge for Heroes said “when I returned from active operations in Bosnia I would have liked this kind of support. I was stressed and felt alone. Then you get back home and everything just carries on and you don’t deal with the grief of losing friends and comrades. I have formed this charity, with friends, to help with this kind of thing. We get our beneficiaries together for group activities through our contact centres and respite holiday breaks.

Through these, our team are able to show open doors to help of all kinds - financial, emotional, and psychological. We have links with COMBAT STRESS, the SAMARITANS, SAFFA, RELIGIOUS Groups and various Forces Benevolent organisations.” The first festival takes place at Newark Showground’s on 22nd and 23rd October 2011. www.thefestivalofpride.co.uk

Teen SceneBy Megan Templeman

Demi Lovato After her time in rehab last year, the

Disney star is coming back with a

bang. Instead of focusing on her

acting career, she’s decided to focus

on her music, previously stating

that “music has always been a huge

part of my life and has helped me

through some tough times”. She’s

certainly had some tough times,

struggling with bipolar disorder

and eating disorders, but her recent

single ‘Skyscraper’ is proof that

she’s now stronger than ever and

won’t let anything stop her from

succeeding. Her album, ‘Unbroken’,

due to be released soon, promises

interesting collaborations and there

are rumours that she has been

working with both Timbaland and

Missy Elliott.

September inevitably means back to school or college and back to reality. The summer is now officially over and the work begins again, but there’s still a lot to look forward to – new challenges ahead, new opportunities and the chance to see friends that you haven’t seen over the summer months.

MUSIC

If you haven’t already read the Immortals series, I

really would recommend it. The series follows

Ever, a teenage girl who has her life changed

when her family is involved in a car crash

and she is the sole survivor.

She finds herself able to see auras and read

people’s thoughts, and is even in touch with her

deceased younger sister. 0The books, written by

Alyson Noël, have a fantasy feel and are perfect for fans of Twilight or the

House of Night books Evermore is the first title in the series.

At the Paul Pry Where the food is good, solidly wholesome and plentiful...

The Paul Pry, located opposite

Morrisons on Lincoln Road, continue

to surprise me with their new menus

and seasonal dishes.

When I was thinking of somewhere

local to take my family for a great

meal, where I could relax and

let them order exactly what they

wanted, knowing I was not going

to have to remortgage the house, I

remembered that Table Table (at the

Paul Pry) offered great value without

compromising on quality.

As there were 8 of us, I thought I

would log onto their website and see

what they had to offer. With main

meals from £4.99 and everything

under a ‘tenner’(except the grills and

slow cooked duck, which I just had to

have – and it was delicious), decision

was made!

The interior design of the restaurant

offers customers seclusion and

intimate dining if you prefer or

spacious booths and room for parties

too.

We started with three sharing platters

between us and all ordered something

different for mains, ranging from

lasagne, gammon and hunters

chicken to steak, duck and mixed grill.

The service was efficient and with a

smile (what a difference that makes!).

There were two things that really

surprised me that evening;

1) Not one of my hungry brood

asked for a dessert (only due to being

full-up, as the selection was very

tempting.

2) The final bill – it was the final

tick I needed to recommend the Paul

Pry.

Are you looking for something

a bit different from your next

holiday? Hankering for a bit of

world-class shopping but also in

need of recharging the batteries?

Why not look at a two-centre

holiday that combines a few days

of indulgent shopping (with credit

card in tow) with days spent

relaxing on a pristine beach?

Here are a few examples of classic “shop & drop” itineraries:-

NEW YORK & BERMUDAWhat better place to satisfy one’s thirst for retail therapy than the Big

Apple. This is one of the best shopping capitals of the world, with

everything from famous department stores such as Macy’s, Saks &

Bloomingdale’s, designer boutiques and outdoor markets. Then the

highlights of the city simply roll off the tongue like a “who’s who” directory

– Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, Statue of

Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge, to name but a few.

Just a short-hop across the Atlantic Ocean (less than 2 hour flight) are

the pink-sand beaches and turquoise waters of Bermuda, which offers a

sophisticated and yet totally relaxed island escape. Bermuda is Britain’s

oldest colony and has a wealth of history to explore, including 365

shipwrecks. There are superb beaches dotted all around the island, more

golf courses per square mile than anywhere else in the world, first-class

hotels and resorts, and an array of quality bars and restaurants.

DUBAI & THE MALDIVES Dubai seems to have the first, largest and the biggest of everything! They

currently have the world’s biggest shopping mall, that even has an indoor

ski slope inside, the tallest skyscraper in Burj Khalifa (2,2717 ft), the most

extravagant hotel in the world in Burj Al Arab, plus a marina that is home

to many of the most expensive yachts in the world! Throw in excellent

beaches, world-class golf courses, desert safaris, a massive waterpark,

top restaurants and bars and you have a destination that is a

dreamy world of attractions and unheard of luxuries.

The Maldives are a wonderful collection of desert island gems,

spread over 90,000km2 of the Indian Ocean. Each island is flat

and ringed by a continuous, palm fringed beach of white sand,

lapped by crystal clear waters which stretch to the horizon and

surrounded by reefs which teem with marine life. The essence

of a holiday in The Maldives is one of luxuriating on a glorious

beach, living by the rhythms of nature and allowing the caress

of the breeze to recharge the soul.

CAPE TOWN & MAURITIUSCape Town is a city with very few equals and offers a plethora of

choice. Enjoy shopping in one of the many excellent shopping

malls or craft markets, feast in superb restaurants, dive with

great white sharks, explore a great coastline, travel by cable car

to the top of Table Mountain, laze on beautiful beaches, swim

with penguins and visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela

was incarcerated.

Mauritius is a verdant tropical island of colour and contrast. This

balmy island has many sophisticated resort hotels which set

standards the world over. For the beach connoisseur and water-

sports lover the island is a treasure…but between the shores

of dazzling sand and blue seas is a scenic island with extinct

volcanoes, lakes, waterfalls, forests and botanical gardens.

Ryan’s Football Preview

We’ve had lots of goals with Bolton

knocking new boys Qpr for 4 as well as

Man City doing the same to Swansea.

We’ve seen the physicality of the

English game at its best with Stoke

and Chelsea battering each other

to the ground, (fairly may I add) in

an entertaining draw and in certain

individuals like Spaniard David Silva

and Man United new boy Ashley Young

we’ve seen pace, intelligence and

skill at its early season best. Let’s

not forget the pantomime villains of

the piece either coming no more so in

the form of Newcastle’s Joey Barton,

controversially getting involved in

the sending off of Arsenal debutant

Gervinho and just having the all round

ability of winding everyone up!

For me there are three standout

fixtures in September. The first is

Arsenal against Brendan Rodgers

Swansea. For anyone who watches

the second tier in English football you

will know that last season the welsh

club reached the golden gates of the

Premiership with a magnificent style

of play, very similar to the gunners

own brand of passing and moving.

On Sun 18th we then have an early

season contender for game of the

season when champs Man United

host Chelsea, made all the more

intriguing with 33 year old blues

boss Andre Villas-Boas taking on the

veteran that is Sir Alex Ferguson for

the first time in his meteoric career.

The final match which stands out

for me is Man City versus Everton

(24th). Both clubs could not be further

apart financially with City able to rely

on their bottomless pit and David

Moyes having to solely depend on

his management ability, Everton are

the only side to not sign anyone this

summer. Football being football though

all this could go out the window come

kick off, and often it does when these

two meet, with the Merseyside men

taking 6 points from 6 in the last two

seasons. Oh how they’ll wish to make

it three in a row.

Email me your thoughts to: [email protected] and

visit: www.semple-soccer.co.uk where I will post all my responses

We’re now 2 fixtures into the Barclays Premier League season and I think we can all agree it’s been an entertaining start with plenty of talking points.

POSH PreviewLast month I talked

about a hope that

Posh would start the

season well with the

most important thing

being too make London

Road a fortress and

play some entertaining

football. Well with 9

goals scored, and 6

points in the bag with

just 2 games to date

I think we can safely

say Darren Ferguson’s

men have achieved

that target! With a

loss at Blackpool and

a gutsy fightback to

draw 2-2 at hostile

Millwall the other

two results, a good

start has definitely

been achieved. Let’s

hope this month’s

games against Hull,

Burnley, West Ham and

Portsmouth don’t put

too much of a spanner

in those works.
