Welcome to The Civic...

The Civic heralds an exciting new era for contemporary art and performance inSouth Yorkshire.

The dramatic transformation of one of Barnsley’s best loved Victorian buildings is well underway with the first phase now complete. The launch of the modern Civic is marked by theintroduction of a vibrant and dynamic arts programme, bringing contemporary performanceand arts to the Assembly Room, the Exhibition Gallery and the newly landscaped MandelaGardens.

Performances of the highest quality have been selected to bring together a diverseprogramme, through an eclectic and exciting mix of disciplines. There are many highlightsto the programme, including Signdance Collective, Three films + One, a skilful weavingtogether of sign language and dance, Bollywood Brass a fusion of traditional brass withBhangra beats and Eduardo Niebela the virtuoso flamenco jazz guitarist, withBrilliantissimo, stopping off on his way to the Royal Festival Hall!

Younger audiences have not been forgotten with a regular series of performances aimedat families and young people, many reworking much loved classics. Old Mother Hubbard asyou’ve never seen her before, presented by Garlic Theatre, the hair-raising escapades ofRapunzel from Theatre Widdershins, mixed with an interactive and immersive sensorydelight from TPO, the internationally renowned Italian company, bringing Butterfliesvirtually to life!

The contemporary programme does however offer a nod to our heritage, classic texts havebeen interwoven with a 21st century twist, Whale an adaptation of Moby Dick has beenrevitalised by Spymonkey and a tour-de-force by Roger Llewellyn humorously bringsSherlock Holmes to a new audience with a solo performance not to be missed.

The fantastic new Gallery also celebrates visual art in all its guises with Revolutions:Gatefold to Download; The art of the music industry, which traces the development andimportant design heritage linked to record sleeve art. This is followed by Walter Giers:Electronic Genius? Art Innovator? A celebration of this major international artist who justhappens to come from our twin town of Schwabisch Gmünd!

I am extremely excited by this next phase of the building’s development, especially as thisspring programme offers something for everyone. I challenge and DARE you to be differentin 2009.

TheFactoryThe Factory invites you to experience a wittyand poignant deconstruction of the conflictand tension between the kitsch demands ofmodern life and the ephemeral wonder of thehuman spirit. Exploring themes such as thecommercialisation of the female body, thepower of advertising and the importance ofpossessions and fame, this show attempts toawaken the most gluttonous consumer to thetrue value of life.

Creating virtual images that appear to floatlike apparitions in mid-air, Precarious producemagical illusions with which the liveperformers can seamlessly interact, creatinga hybrid spectacle.

“Hugely imaginative multimedia work withsome eerily striking physical sequences… A dazzling range of digital effects andchoreographic tricks.”

The Guardian

“A tremendous piece of multimedia work …the video components of the show are amongthe most impressive I have seen in years atany level of work… extraordinary.”

Financial Times

Curiosity meets one-upmanship as twodecorators investigate their surroundings, competing to entertain each other in anattempt to forget about the monotony ofevery day working life.

Elements of Hip-Hop (b-boying, Dj’ing, MC’ingand Beatbox) are hidden and twisted into adynamic physical performance combiningwitty dialogue and intricate choreography tocreate an energetic and hilarious comedy.

SpymonkeyThursday 21 – Friday 22 May

WhaleAn early opportunity to see Spymonkey’snewest creation, an unreliable version ofMoby Dick created with director Jos Houben.

Four whalers have themselves been eaten bytheir quarry. The irony! With the (im)patienceof Jonah they await their disgorging. To amusethemselves they recount a story of Moby Dick, with their own flourishes. The novel’s epicexamination of good, evil, fate and obsessionis lost on them. And then. mysteriously, foundon them again.

A huge international following has been builton Spymonkey’s exuberant mix of superiorphysical skills, spirited dialogue and brilliantvisual impact. Combining the formality ofBritish traditional theatre with a Europeanapproach to clowning and stage anarchy, itsshows are full-on, fast-paced and hilarious.

“Made me laugh so much my throat hurt”

SDC’s Dance Director David Bower (FourWeddings & A Funeral and BBC radio 4’s HunchBack of Notre Dame) and Cuban dancer IsolteAvila collaborated with Twelve internationalartists to create ‘Three Films + One’ SDC’sbold new performance.

Listen is based on David Bower’s experience oftinnitus. This hard-hitting piece gives theaudience an intense visual and auditoryexperience.

The second piece Here is very lyrical – themovement consisting of a carefully dramatisedpiece of dance made up of signed dialogueand live projection telling the story of arelationship in flux.

The third work Travelling tells the comic storyof how it is to live a life of constantly crossingboundaries – geographical and physicalboundaries as well as existential boundariesrelating to disability and deafness.
