A MESSAGE FROM DEACON TOM WESTERKAMP

To the compassionate people of Saint Anne parish,

My name is Deacon Tom Westerkamp, and for the past 31 years, my wife, Diane, and I have been parishioners of St. James in Arlington Heights. This summer, we are moving to be closer to our grand-children in Cary.

My wife is a part-time school nurse, and I am a semi-retired pharmacist. We are the proud parents of three grown children. I have been a deacon at St. James since 2009 and have enjoyed my involvement with several ministries and truly enjoy helping others.

I have heard about the wonderful people of Saint Anne from my conversations with Fr. Joji and Fr. Bernie, and I am very interested in being a part of this vibrant parish. It would be an honor to serve the Lord with you.

I am excited and humbled to journey with you all as we continue to serve the Lord by serving others, and I look forward to meeting you in the coming months.

Your Brother in Christ,

Deacon Tom Westerkamp

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story

The Lectionary authors use this portion of The Sundays of the Year (Summer Ordinary Time) to track Luke’s own telling of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem where all is culminated (9:51a). Luke takes from 9:51 through the end of his first book1 at 24:53 to describe a geographical journey in which to describe the more important theological journey. On the 11th Sunday, at 7:47, we learn then that a person who is forgiven much has the potential to love much – a counter-cultural stance. On the 12th Sunday, we see another counter-cultural event: at 9:20, the Christ of God (the Anointed, the Messiah) is to suffer greatly, be rejected, be killed and be raised (9:22); the people’s expectation was for a Christ that would bring them freedom in their own land from the oppression by the Romans. Today, on the 13th Sunday, Luke shows Jesus once more putting things in the perspective of righteousness – they are to leave all behind, even family, to follow him; to follow Jesus is paramount. Next Sunday (10:1-12, 17-20), we will again see this – the disciples are warned against being distracted while on The Way; even those whom they encounter are admonished (at 10:10-12). Today, Luke summarizes this at v.51b: like Jesus, all are to be firm, undistracted, resolute – all (that’s us) are to set their faces like flint2 and undertake their journey in Christ3. At v.53, the ancient enmity between Judeans and Samaritans is highlighted in the little story of the desire of the disciples to deal harshly with the Samaritans for not giving hospitality to Jesus. Jesus replies

clearly, don’t get distracted, let’s move forward – moreover, retaliation is not the way of the king-dom. The next three vignettes are emphatic about these points: we are not to be deterred by second-ary things, even such highly regarded things as possessions, human responsibilities or even personal relationships; all these are minor when compared to building the kingdom of God. Don’t be distracted! Even family ties are secondary. Recall the importance of cohesiveness within the extended family in first century Mediterranean culture; outside that family, even physical survival was doubtful. Yet, here is Luke, showing Jesus as demanding total allegiance to himself as God’s Messiah4. Compare 12:51 where Luke tells of direct conflict between absolute responsibilities: that of son to father and father to son on the one hand and the responsibilities of being a follower of Jesus on the other. At v.62, Luke uses what was an easily understood cultural metaphor: the Mediter-ranean plow was operated with one hand and required close attention to keep it on track. To look around is to be vulnerable to being side-tracked! Don’t let yourself get distracted by any-thing on the journey.

As always, Hebrew scripture stands solely on its own merit; it is the story of God’s interaction with those whom God has chosen to be God’s People from the time of Abram through today, and those scriptures are not dependent on the Christian scriptures for their meaning. Yet, here there is a clear link between the two. This story from 1

Sharing the Living Story

Kings has an echo in the gospel passage for today. God’s prophet, Elijah5 signifies God’s choice of Elisha6 as his successor by throwing his own mantle over Elisha, thereby conferring legitimacy and authority. Elisha is a man of considerable means – he has 12 oxen! He has great trust in God and a readiness to follow Elijah, God’s prophet; he kills all his oxen, uses the wood of the plowing equipment to cook the meat and then takes the meat to feed the people. By this, he severs connection to his very family identity by permanently giving up the sign of his wealth and power; he leaves to follow Elijah and be his attendant. Even in the face of such trust and complete, total commitment, Elisha must not be distracted when returning to bid farewell to his parents; Elijah shows confidence that Elisha will not be distracted by telling him to go back to his parents.

The verses chosen from Psalm 16 are also about avoiding distraction from the mission to follow God; and amidst distraction, God can keep one secure. The refrain is You are my inheritance, O Lord whose sense is perhaps captured for us by the opening verses, especially these: I say to the Lord, you are my Lord, you are my only good … you have made my destiny secure … with the Lord at my right, I

shall never be shaken … you will show me the path to life … It is, significantly, the psalm used at ordination to the priesthood.

In the 2nd reading, Paul is very graphic in assert-ing that it is only in the Spirit that we find real and true freedom. This text is less about “sins of the flesh” and more about relationships among our-selves, about our relationship with the Body of Christ. See, for example, the missing verses 2-12 to give more context for today’s pericope. Paul seems to promote the Greek view of spirit versus flesh. But if we think in terms of our former unredeemed nature and our nature now trans-formed by grace, then we see the nut of the passage is once more about not being distracted. Christ has already set us free; we must not put our necks back into the noose and get ourselves off track. If we are bound by anything, then we are not free to love and do God’s will; in today’s terms, addictions, co-dependency, concupiscence, laws, sin, obligations, are all distractions, barriers to our being free in order to be able to be intimate with the Christ and all God’s creation while on our journey. (Compare Matthew 16:19!)

So What? How can we balance what we see as “duty” to family, to community, to country, to world with what seems to be the stark demand of the gospel at vv. 58, 61 and 62?

1 Luke’s second book is the Acts of the Apostles whose continuity with his Gospel is emphasized by using the term Luke-Acts.

2 Compare Isaiah 50:7, which is part of the third of four Servant o f the lord Songs; Christian tradition sees the Christ as the fulfillment of these oracles.

3 See Rory Cooney hymn: Jerusalem, My Destiny 4 Social scientists call this relationship of a group of disparate, unrelated persons gathered around a leader, a fictive

kinship. 5 Elijah = my God is YHWH 6 Elisha = El (God) has saved

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

WILL BE ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 4TH *
