Degree Program: B. A. in El. Ed., 1966
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: I had Religious Sisters of Mercy in grade school and
high school, so my parents and I were persuaded to attend Mercy. Also I had an academic
scholarship.
Fondest Memory: Life in the dorms and the friendships I made.
Dream That Came True: Through my teaching and volunteering experience, I have been able to
influence many children I have encountered, especially those with a poor family life.
Family Life: My husband Dan and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on June 18.
We have three children and four grandchildren. We have been Yoopers for nearly 40 years and
enjoy the winters and brief summers. I retired from teaching in 2000.
Hobbies: Traveling in our motorhome, mainly to the Southwest in the winters to visit family.
Camping, reading, gardening, and substitute teaching when I choose to be available. Attending
sports events of our grandchildren - both in Marquette and California.
Charitable Interests: Dan and I support local charities, including our church, the Care Clinic, St.
Vincent de Paul, Catholic Relief Services, as well as the four universities we have attended.
Favorite Vacation: Our entire family gathered in Salt Lake City to attend the 2002 Olympics. We
attended numerous events, including the Closing Ceremonies.
Volunteer: I volunteer numerous hours per week at our local church, St. Louis the King, being
an integral part of a major renovation. Dan and I also prepare meals and sit with the clients at
the Room at the Inn, our local homeless shelter. I also volunteer at special events at my
grandsons' schools. Before retirement, I served as director of our Young Authors program and
was president of the Marquette-Alger Reading Council.
Present Connection to UDM: Being so far away, I am inactive. I do read the magazine from
UDM to keep up to date, plus the Religious Sisters of Mercy Center bulletins.

Degree Program: Home Economics Bachelor of Science degree 1966
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: Mercy was known to have a very good Home
Economics Program. It also was located only five blocks from my home so I was considered a
"day hopper".
Fondest Memory: There are so many memories of my time at Mercy College. My favorite is
living in the apartment at the Administration Building with Jan Olsavski, Kathy Rourke and
Kathy Lenane in our Senior Year. This was part of our curriculum to graduate. They gave me a
Wedding Shower that lasted into the wee hours and the head of the Home Economics
Department, Sister Mzary Celeste, had to come down and tell us to go to bed. It was the best of
times.
Dream That Came True: I met my husband, James Cassar, through our Sodality, at Mercy
College during my Freshman year. He came with a group from the Newman Club from
Lawrence Tech College. We were debating "Company-keeping" while in college. When I saw
him come up the stairs of the Administration Building, I turned to the girl next to me and said "I
am going to marry him". And I did, three years later to the day from the time we met on
February 5, 1966!
Family Life: My family life has been full of wonderful family moments. We have been married
for 50 years this year and have seven sons and one daughter. They have all grown to become
extremely successful in their own lives. Jim and I could not be more proud of them all. We also
now have eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way. The older
grandchildren are also doing well as we expect the little ones to do too.
Hobbies: I enjoy volunteering at my church, St. Rita's in Holly, Michigan. I also draw, paint and
read.
Charitable Interests: My charitable interests includ of course, the University of Detroit Mercy,
several missionaries, children interests, and paralyzed veterans.
Favorite Vacation: We are a camping family and now own a motor home which we use to visit
our children who are all over the United States. However, we did visit my sister-in-law in
France and had a very enjoyable time. We will probably be visiting Vienna, Austria, as our
youngest son will be moving there soon.
Volunteer: I have done many volunteer jobs since I graduated, first was writing a home ec
column for a community paper, and working with engaged couples in our churches. I have also
worked in my children's school's doing everything from working in booster clubs to honoring
gifted students. Right now I am working at St. Rita's Curch in Holly, MI decorating for the
different liturgies.
Present Connection to UDM: Right now, I do not have a connection to UDM except for
donating. But when I first graduated, I was on the Alumni Board for many years.

Degree Program: BSN, 1966
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: I chose Mercy College of Detroit because I wanted a
baccalaureate degree in nursing which was a rather new concept in the 1960s. I had applied and
was accepted at several other schools in Ohio; however, I found the learning environment at
Mercy College to be much more supportive of a student learning and success in their chosen
career track.
Fondest Memory: My fondest memories at Mercy are of living in the new dorm with some
wonderful classmates and friends. And... the get-togethers we had with Sr. Agnes Mary
Mansour. She was a wonderful mentor and model for all of us.
Dream That Came True: My classmates were always finding fun things to do on the weekend.
One evening in our sophomore year, we told the staff we were going to a religious presentation
at the Newman Club at Wayne State. Religious Presentation? Let's be honest, we were out
looking for men! That night, I met my soulmate, Ty. We were blessed to be with each other for
over 54 years. Ty died in June, 2011. He has left me with so many wonderful memories. He was
the most caring, loving, husband and father. He was so full of fun and able to make me laugh
every day of my life with him. Truth be known, he still has me laughing every day as I
remember some of his greatest jokes and pranks.
Family Life: Ty and I have two wonderful children, Amy and Michael. Amy is a physical
therapist in the Detroit area. Michael is the founding director of the film program at Interlochen
School of the Arts in Traverse City. He and his wife, Laura, have blessed our family with two
little boys, Elliot and Peter. Elliot is three years old and has inherited his grandfather's intellect
and quick wit. He is a very funny, funny little guy! Peter was given Ty's middle name. He will
be be a year old at the end of July. He is the most loving little cuddler you will ever hold in your
arms.
Hobbies: Name the hobby and I have at least attempted it! Most recently, I have been revisiting
some needlework projects and taking a few watercolor classes.
Charitable Interests: Most of my career was devoted to the nursing care and research of teen
parents and their children. The teens in my practice were primarily from disadvantaged
families.
Favorite Vacation: Oh my favorite of all vacations was a train tour of the Canadian Rockies
from Calvary north to Lake Louise and west to Vancouver. My second favorite was our tour
throughout all of Ireland; where we visited the cities and countrysides where my ancestors had
lived five generations ago. More recently, my daughter, Amy and I took an Alaskan land and
sea cruise together. What a wonderful time I had visiting with her quietly and enjoying some
wonderful scenery together.
Volunteer: Since retiring, I have volunteered in the Pontiac elementary schools and at the senior
program at the Rochester OPC.

Degree Program: BS Social Work
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: MCD was ahead of other colleges in their Social Work
program. Because of that and Social Work was my chosen focus, I chose MCD. My 4 days/week
field placement at Wayne County Juvenile Court was unlike any other and had a major impact
on my admission to University of Michigan School of Social Work where I earned my Masters
degree.
Fondest Memory: The friendships made that have lasted for all these years. We were true
“women of the 60’s” and were part of the Vietnam war through our family and friends who
were fighting in it. Without the means of communication as we do now, we brought a little
“home” to them. We filled close to 100 wrapped shoe boxes full of gifts from Michigan and an
individual note of thanks. It was a time of protests, of course we couldn’t be left behind. So, we
planned our protest….against the food. Homemade signs and picketing in front the Student
Center with drawings of what was found in our food, did what all our complaints didn’t do.
The food service was replaced. We realized that was a bit too much before I was called into
Sister Judith’s office! She was much nicer than I probably would have been in her position
(Dean of Students). But, she recognized the problem and I recognized it was best not to organize
another protest! From the dates arrivals and having to wait in the lobby while we were notified
to the 11:00 pm curfew and the “occasional” being “campused” and the protest about being
campused...all memorable. Times have changed so much...but, we have these memories.
Dream That Came True: I have been blessed at having 2 careers. My first was over 25 yrs as a
Medical Social Worker in Ann Arbor’s Medical Centers. Trauma/ER/Burn were my life. They
afforded me an incredible opportunity at both hospitals to develop the ER Social Work
program. Of all I did in my career, this is my greatest accomplishment. At UMMC, the
development of that program helped bring their Trauma level from 2 to Trauma 1. I am very
proud that program continues to grow. When they were downsizing, I became eligible for an
early retirement which I accepted without with even thinking! I became the Director of
Operations for the Parade Company. What fun to do the operations for America’s Thanksgiving
Parade and the Fireworks in June among other events. I had been a longtime volunteer and am
a volunteer once again. I left that position to go to UDM and do the events for the last Capital
Campaign. I enjoy my volunteer life..my role at a Disaster Mental Health Responder for the Red
Cross is the most gratifying of my opportunities.
Family Life:
Hobbies: My volunteer life is my hobby. I enjoy every activity I’ve been involved with.
Retiring early allowed me to see the opportunities that were offered outside of the medical
environment.
Charitable Interests:
Favorite Vacation: Any of my winter vacations with friends to a warm location!
Volunteer:
Present Connection to UDM: An alum of Mercy College of Detroit.

Degree Program: School of Engineering, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, 1966
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: I attended the University of Detroit because it was a
registered engineering school and because it had a co-op program which allowed me to work in
the field between semesters and earn enough money to continue my education at the school.
Fondest Memory: The connection with fellow students. Dorm life provided me with new
friends and the chance to study and learn together. Helping each other with studies allowed me
the opportunity to learn the subjects more completely.
Dream That Came True:
Family Life: Besides my wife, Patricia, I have three children and four grandchildren. My grand
children keep us busy as they live nearby and visit often.
Hobbies: My hobbies include camping and travel. Also I keep busy with playing the guitar,
fishing, hiking, sightseeing, working out and woodworking.
Charitable Interests:
Favorite Vacation: My favorite vacation was our two trips out west where we visited such

Pontiac group for 2nd and 3rd years. I graduated with an RN in 1966. Our school records are
now housed at UDM.
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: I attended Mercy School of Nursing to become a RN. I

ago.

Degree Program: Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry 1966
Why Attend U of D or Mercy College: I was drawn to Mercy College as a Catholic college with
a highly ranked Nursing program. I started in Nursing and later switched majors to Chemistry.
Fondest Memory: Graduation June 1966. I was first in our family to graduate from college. My
family was very proud. A second wonderful memory was the significant expansion of the
Mercy campus in 1965 (new dorm, conference center, dining facilities, classrooms, etc.) Our
lives as students changed dramatically. Mercy was on the move. It was exciting to be part of
that time.
Dream That Came True: Sometimes we don't know our dreams until we live them. Mine was
an almost 40 year relationship with the Sisters of Mercy. What a fantastic group of dedicated
women! So much of who I am today, was due to the RSMs. Likewise it has been a great joy and
privilege to work at Mercy College of Detroit (1977-1990) and University of Detroit Mercy (1990-
2001; 2009-present). I can't imagine a more rewarding career than supporting Catholic higher
education in the traditions of the Jesuits and Sisters of Mercy.
Family Life: I married a prince of a man in 1980 when I was 35 and he was 40. Ron died 2006.
We were great partners in life.
Hobbies: I enjoy exercise, reading and traveling to close destinations but I have a long list of
hobbies to develop...as soon as I retire.
Charitable Interests: University of Detroit Mercy is my absolute favorite charity followed by
my high school (Regina) my church (St. Thomas More in Troy) and the Michigan Humane
Society. And, of course, I support the Sisters of Mercy.
Favorite Vacation: Ron and I took winter ski vacations to Aspen and Snowmass and summer
vacations to Boca Raton (FL) annually. I have great memeories of those times.
I also traveled several times with my Dad to Europe with memorable visits to Germany,
England and especially Poland, our ancestral home.
Volunteer: I am pleased to volunteer at the Conference for Mercy Higher Education, Dollars for
Scholars, Beaumont Troy Hospital and St. Thomas More Church.
