Resurrecting a 1926 Chevrolet

Bill Palombo learned about mechanical things on a farm when he was very young, and now was looking for a hobby that could put his skills to good use. He thought about it and decided that the old car hobby was the thing for him. So, he set off in search of a car.

Bill always had a fondness for Chevys and set his sights on one from the twenties. He was conflicted over whether to get a re-stored car or one needing work. That decision was thought to be resolved when he found a 26 Chevy for sale on eBay. Photos revealed what appeared to be a very clean car, if not a beauty. So, Bill bought it

sight-unseen, thinking this car he could start enjoying immediately.

When the car arrived home, Bill could see at first glance that he had been a bit optimistic. It was a little less than perfect. And, as he dug deeper, he realized he should have gone to see the car before buying it. So, it turns out that Bill would get to use his skills doing a complete restoration. That was the year 2000.

Bill’s Chevy is a 1926 Su-perior V two-door coach. Wheelbase between the wood artillery wheels is 103 inches. The car weighs 1800 pounds. The engine is an overhead valve in-line 4 with a bore of 3-11/16 inches and a 4 inch stroke, displacing 171 cu-bic inches. With a Carter updraft carburetor it yields 26HP at 2000 RPM. It features an electric starter with a trusty crank as backup.

Wow summer is flying by quickly. We’re having lots of fun and still have a cou-ple exciting activities planned in August before we get to the car show. Jon Battle has sent out the call for Rohr Show award sponsors. Look for his re-cent email. I’ll keep this short but check my message in the July Clutch Chat-ter. We are still looking for volunteers for many activities. Just get in touch with me if interested. We’re out here having fun, hope to see you at out next event, please consider volunteering to lend us a hand and happy driving. R/Bill Holmes President Editor’s Note: Reprinted below is the list from Bill’s July comments. Here is what we need if you want the club to continue to have monthly pro-grams, quarterly outings and the Rohr show:

1) We need every member to step up and donate $10-$20, recruit a new Sponsor or donate a quality item to be sold on eBay. Send money to Nicki Hudson. Sponsor forms are on the website and items for sale go to me. 2) Four (4) Members to be on the Program Committee to plan events for 2017, help find speakers and plan outings. Contact me or Jon Battle 3) Sponsorship manager to track and lead recruitment of official sponsors and Clutch Chatter/website advertising . Contact me or Bill Winter. 4) New member welcoming committee. Need 2-3 members who will con-tact new members to find out the needs and willingness to volunteer. 5) Membership recruiting team of two to four members. Group to organize recruiting efforts, create club flyer and organize membership efforts to vari-ous shows to find new members. Contact Lenita Franklin. 6) Youth Committee and Scholarship committee. Group to create and man-age a scholarship program. 3-5 members. Contact me. 7) Coordinators to plan details for the August fun run and picnic. Need 1-2 members. Contact me. 8) Coordinator for the fall foliage tour in late Oct. Contact me. 9) Rohr show volunteers. Darryll needs to firm up who will help on show day plus several committee chairs are not filled. This is a lot of work for the handful doing it right now. Please step up and help out. 10) Rohr show advertising. Jon battle needs 2-3 persons who can help him with emailing advertising sources, tracking down editors etc. 11) Rohr Show business support. Jon Battle needs help contacting merchants to sponsor trophies, donate gifts and financial support for the show. This is critical to pay for the show. 12 Rohr Show poster distribution. Help Jon Battle get posters out around the county to be displayed in merchants’ stores, libraries, schools etc. We need to expand this effort thought the entire Northern Virginia area. 13) Club officers and Board members. There are several positions that will be open this year. Contact any officers or Board members if you would con-sider an elected position. 14) Refreshments for monthly meetings. Joann Richardson is coordinating. 15) Other miscellaneous tasks. Contact me if none of the above interest you. There are many other things to be done.

We have a great club here in Bull Run. Those of us who are your elected leaders and those who are volunteering need help. Call me any time if you want to discuss any of the above.

Car of the Month continued

Exhibiting the patience of Job, Bill, with help from a good friend, toiled for 13 years to complete a frame-off restoration. The wood frame was replaced in its entirety and all metal surfaces were stripped bare. All electricals were totally rewired and/or rebuilt. The interior was com-

pletely stripped, seat frames rebuilt, every-thing reupholstered, and new glass made and installed.

The engine, which had cracks in the head, was sent out to be rebuilt. The Res-toration Shop in Staf-ford was chosen to deal with the head.

This required slicing off the top layer in order to repair cracks in the water jackets and refilling the voids with molten cast iron, which was formed to look exactly like original.

Many new parts were fabricated, including the fuel tank and lines, radiator, rear leaf springs, and aprons, both side and front. Bill rebuilt the me-chanical rear brake as-semblies and installed new contracting bands. Finally, the car’s shiny bits were replaced with new reproduction parts.

But not all went well. The sad part of the story concerns the body shop Bill picked to do the paint. After waiting six months for an opening, he deliv-ered the assembled car to the shop and waited another 16 months for

them to report back that the car was finished. Now, here’s the rest of the story:

Bill arrived at the shop only to find the car in pieces. In moving the car around, the body slid off the chassis. Q: Where are the body bolts? A: That’s how you brought it to us?

When Bill told them the shade of green was not what he requested, the an-swer was, that’s the green we always use. Bill had asked for a black border around the windows, but the body shop didn’t like the way that looked and ignored his request.

When Bill tried to attach the doors, he found that they had warped from being stored in a non-climate-controlled room too long.

Bill had done the body prep using lead on all the joints. The shop removed the lead and replaced it with Bondo.

Sad News: Bill Holmes recently learned through a third party that Bull Run member Warren Bain unexpect-edly passed away. We do not know the details, but the following is the announcement sent out by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America of which he was also a member.

“Warren Bain

Warren served on the GWS Board as our Tech Chair from 2009 until 2014. It is with deep sadness we report on his passing on June first, a memorial service was held on June 18 to honor him. In addition to his passion for automobiles, especially Mercedes-Benz’s he was also an avid model train and stereo enthusiast. Warren was well respected in the model railroading community. Originally from Ontario Canada, Warren lived in Northern Virginia for the better part of his adult life. He will be missed by MBCA members from around the region.”

Upcoming Meetings: August meeting will have Owen Griesemer speaking on antique car and auto collection appraising.

September meeting will have Peter Pandolfi provide a guided tour of the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company Museum. Very appropriate for September 11.

Upcoming Tours: August 27 Bull Run Region will have a scavenger drive in the Loudoun County, VA area ending in a Picnic hosted by Jim and Edna Cross near Leesburg. The tour starts at 2 pm and ends with the pic-nic at 4 pm.

October 23 Bull Run Region will have its Fall tour to a restored Nash dealership in Strasburg, VA. View the Fall foliage in Massanutten mountain valley. Rain date is Oc-tober 30. More information to follow.

Presenters needed. Jon Battle has several people on tap for short presentations at our monthly meetings, but there is always a need for more. Do you have some spe-cial expertise you would like to share? Do you have a favorite make of vehicle you could enlighten the rest of the membership about? If you do, please contact Jon Bat-tle and let him know.

My old 1939 Chevy Bus had been in Indiana since No-vember being used as a promotional event by the Indiana Pacers professional basketball team celebrating the 30 anniversary of the making of the movie “Hoosiers.” As the bus is one of the icons from the movie, they wanted it associated with their monthly “Hickory Pacers” nights,

when the team would wear the old style uniforms. The bus would be prominently parked in front of the basketball stadium, and there would be various players from the “50’s”era and original team cast members from the movie “Hoosiers” with it. The bus got

a lot of notoriety in Indiana and even made national TV several times on ESPN.

During this time I was contacted by the Indianapolis 500 Parade sponsors who asked if they bus could be in the parade. They explained it would be on 28 May, the day before the race, and would host over 300,000 spectators, just for the parade! The pa-rade officials and the Indian-apolis Pacers negotiated with me on which of the two or-ganizations would decorate the bus to make it appear as it did during some of the movie highlights. The Pacers won out so they did the decorations and provided a team of cheer-leaders and their mascot “Boomer,” to escort the bus during the parade.

August Meeting Presentation by Jon Battle

Owen Griesemer, a collector car appraiser, will address the next meeting of the Bull Run Region on Sunday, August 14 at 4:00 P.M.

Owen has worked for the Auto Appraisal Group, a Virginia-based nationwide organiza-tion, since 1992. He has traveled across the country in his line of work. One of the high-lights of his career was being part of a team that appraised the legendary, 3,000-car Harold LeMay automotive collection in Tacoma, Washington in 2001.

During his presentation, Owen will relate how he got into the appraisal business, and will give the history of the AAG. He'll discuss the appraisal process and the many aspects of ar-riving at a value for a collector car, and then he'll recount some of his more interesting ap-praisal experiences (including the LeMay pro-ject).

The son of an antique car collector, Owen grew up in the world of collector cars and his first car was a 1966 Old 442. He's been a member of the Oldsmobile Club of America (OCA) since 1980 and the Pontiac Oakland Club of America since 1990 and is a certified National Judge of both. He founded the first OCA chapter in the Washington area, and has been an officer and director of the Olds Per-formance Chapter of the OCA. He's a mem-ber of the AACA, and currently owns three muscle cars.

The Wings and Wheels Car Show at the Flying Circus in Bealeton on July 10th turned out to be a fun filled day. A late cancellation announcement from Flying Circus caused some confusion in the morning about whether the car show was taking place. I got there early to get the real story. Due to the mix up on their part, they let all antique cars in free so I stayed around.

In the end 10 club members (Richard Porter, Brian Thomas, Bob Mantz, Franklin Gage, Paul Puff, Scott Pat-ton, Ray & Lenita Franklin, Dave Claveloux, T McQueen, G&B DiVecchia, G Walthour) showed up plus about 20 other cars.

Everyone was having a great time, even a few members got up the nerve to go for a plane ride.

At 2:30 we were treated to the famous Flying Circus air show recreating the post WWI barnstorming days of the

20s and 30s. Acrobatics, formation flying, The Red Baron’s famous hijinks, wing walking and more!

After the show the organizers set up a 1940s Navy Stear-man biplane for a photo shoot. A complete set of photos are on the BullRunaaca.org website.

In addition John Maloney from GEMphoto.zenfolio.com has more photos you can see and download. John will be our October speaker. In all it was a great day to be out for a lovely drive, meet good friends and see a fantastic show. More pictures on page 7

The parade was the coolest thing I’ve done with the bus. The 300,000 spectators knew of the bus from the movie, and we received an amazing reception throughout the nearly 2-mile parade route through downtown Indianapo-lis. It received local newspaper and TV cover-age and it was truly great to have been “back home again in Indiana.”

During the pa-rade I was able to invite a bunch of family to include my brother/sister and families, some fraternity brothers from college, aunts and uncles. I also invited the widow of the man, Terry Nichols, who had done much of the engine, window and electrical work to restore the bus back in 1996-1999. Terry was a former Indy Racing League mechanic who never saw something “rusty and sitting in a field that he didn’t want to fix.”

He was that kind of guy. I lost track of him when he moved and only was able to make contact about 2 years ago when I was approached by a man at the Edgar Rohr show (2014) telling me that he’d played in the

bus as a kid. He mentioned that Terry was dying of can-cer and did not have long to live. I was able to make con-tact with Terry and his wife and she told me that he was thrilled to see the bus in such great shape and being used so widely. After Terry passed in late 2014, she avoided the racing circuit, but accepted my invitation to ride with us during the parade. It was an emotional event for us all.

I was also able to attend the 100th running of the Indi-anapolis 500 held at the Speedway on 29 May. It was a thrilling race and we saw a rookie, Alexander Rossi, gamble that he had more experienced drivers, stopped

into the pits late in the race. He won the gamble, and the race, but ran out of fuel on his victory lap and had to be towed into “Victory Lane!”

Car of the Month continued

With the passage of time, Bill says the color has grown on him and the car looks good.

In fact, the end product of the restoration reveals a like-new appearance. And the car runs as well as it looks. Bill and his wife, Heidi, enjoy driv-ing it around town and taking it to the cruise-in at the Jukebox Diner on Friday nights. It al-so gets its share of ex-posure and kudos at car shows and benefits.

Among the more important awards the car has earned are Best Chevrolet at the 2015 All-GM Show at Montgom-ery College and Best of Show - General Motors at the 2015 Edgar Rohr Memorial An-tique Car Show in Manassas.

When confronted with the truth about the car he just bought, Bill could have thrown his arms up and walked away from the project. We should all be glad he didn’t. After all, saving rare old cars is a noble cause and is at the core of our hobby. And it’s like saving our history. Bill would agree that the re-ward was worth the effort even if Heidi now wants him to do a car for her.
