THE UNDER2 COALITION DRIVING CLIMATE ACTION IN STATES AND REGIONS The Under2 Coalition is driven by a group of ambitious state and regional governments committed to keeping the global temperature rise to well below 2°C. The coalition brings together more than 220 governments, who represent over 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy. State and regional governments are in a unique position to accelerate climate action. They work at a level that allows for quicker action and greater experimentation than national governments. They can support national governments to meet their climate targets and give them confidence to go further and faster. For business, the commitment of states and regions gives them the certainty they need to make investments and the combined result is an ultimate shift in narrative, that shows the transition to a low carbon economy is not only possible, but already happening. To join the coalition, governments sign the ‘Under2 Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU), a commitment to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80-95% on 1990 levels, or to two annual metric tons per capita, by 2050. The Under2 MOU is also open to endorsement by national governments. As Secretariat to the Under2 Coalition, The Climate Group works with governments in the coalition to accelerate climate action through three workstreams. 2050 Pathways Deep decarbonization pathway planning: supporting governments to develop robust medium and long-term (2050) emissions reduction plans in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. THE UNDER2 COALITION DRIVING CLIMATE ACTION IN STATES AND REGIONSThe Under2 Coalition is driven by a group of ambitious state and regional governments committed to keeping the global temperature rise to well below 2°C.

2050 Pathways

Deep decarbonization pathway planning: supporting governments to develop robust medium and long-term (2050) emissions reduction plans in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Policy Action

Scaling innovative policy solutions: spreading today’s best climate policies and supporting governments to develop new policies.

Transparency

Mainstreaming transparency and reporting: supporting governments so they have the expertise and systems in place to assess their emissions accurately, track progress and ensure policies remain fit for delivering against climate targets.

THE COALITION BRINGS TOGETHER MORE THAN 220 GOVERNMENTS. THEY REPRESENT OVER 1.3 BILLION PEOPLE AND 43% OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY.
