THE COLD WAR: 1945-1989 A regional touring exhibition produced by Epping Forest District Museum and supported by
Arts Council England.
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Cold War:1945-1989
explores one of the most important ideological and political conflicts of the twentieth
century. From the Korean War to the Space Race, this exhibition tells the story of the tense
struggle between communism and democracy and its effect on the world around it.
Designed to be completely flexible, it is easy for any venue, small or large, to hire this
exciting and dynamic display. Hire includes a set of freestanding text panels, easy to
assemble interactives, high-end acrylic quote blinds, a reading corner, set dressings and
much more.

12 FREE STANDING POP UP TEXT PANELS
(W:87cm, H:2m, Height is adjustable)
This exhibition contains 12 pop up text panels. All panels are designed to be read
independently and can be chosen in a pick n’ mix style. This allows venues to
disperse the exhibition throughout the building, or to have the text panels together
in a more traditional temporary exhibition style.

OBJECTS
Artefacts
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any museum objects with this exhibition. We
encourage receiving venues to personalise the exhibition by adding their own objects to the
display. Whilst at its launch venue, Design Icons featured a number of objects on loan from a
variety of museums around the region. If you would like assistance or guidance in borrowing
items, please get in touch with a member of the exhibitions team.

QUOTE BLINDS
These acrylic blinds use quotes and images to interpret the history of the Cold War. There
are four blinds in the full set but each blind can be hired in a pick n’ mix basis.

INTERACTIVES
1. Sound Post
(H: 170cm W: 70cm, D:70cm, mains power
required)
This freestanding sound post features 8 tracks of
popular music from the Cold War Era. Each
track was inspired and written in response to the
conflict and includes songs such as “The Final
Countdown”, “Two Tribes” and “We Didn’t Start
the Fire”.
2. Reading Corner

This interactive reading
corner encourages visitors to
engage with the books and
games that were produced at the time of the Cold War, showing how the conflict
influenced every aspect of everyday life.

3. Civil Defence Films
(2 x LCD TVs, TV stand and base, 2 x DVDs with 4 films, 1 x remote control, 2 x
headphones)
Hire of this exhibition includes four films all made during the Cold War. 3 are civil
defence based and reflect the growing concern of nuclear warfare that emerged
during the conflict. The last is a short film detailing the logistics of the Berlin Airlift
that occurred at the start of the Cold War. Films can be played on repeat individually
or can be repeated as a set.
2 high standard HD LCD TVs are included within the hire alongside a TV stand and
base that replicates the Berlin Wall. All films are courtesy of the Imperial War
Museum.

4. Spy Trail
(Size: A4 Quiz Sheets, 6x A4 Clue Cards)
This spy trail takes younger visitors around the exhibition hunting for spy clues.

5. Memory Cards
(Size: A5)
For older visitors, this asks visitors to write down their own memories of the Cold
War. This can then be created into an attractive wall display.

SET DRESSINGS
Flags of the Cold War
(5 flags each measuring 1.5m by 0.9m, display poles are included within the hire)
This simple display invites visitors to identify redundant flags from the Cold War Era.
Display poles are included for venues that wish to hang the flags. Alternatively they can be
folded or laid flat. Flag labels included.

EVALUATION
(A5 Size)
Included within this exhibition is a set of evaluation cards, please encourage visitors to fill
these out with their feedback. At the end of the exhibition, please keep the completed
evaluation cards and return them to Epping Forest District Museum.
If any more cards are needed, please contact the Exhibitions Officer who will be happy to
provide additional ones.

MARKETING
We provide a number of tools to help venues market and advertise this exhibition. Included
in the support pack is a template of a Press Release and a variety of poster documents
available for editing.
1. Display Feathers
(Size: 2x 2m)
These feathers are suitable for use outside and inside venues. They can help to provide a
distinct entrance into the exhibition or can be placed outside the venue as an advertising tool.
They are quick and easy to assemble.
2. A-Board
(Size: A1)
This A-board can be placed both outdoors and indoors to direct visitors towards the
exhibition and is a handy marketing tool to draw in different audiences.

template poster is provided with the
exhibition. Both a JPEG file and a hard
copy are provided in the Exhibition
Support Pack. It is very simple for the
receiving venue to add their own logos
with Word, Paint or any digital imaging
