  • Virginia's Colonial Williamsburg wins Golf Magazine Premier Resort Gold Medal

    2/27/14

Colonial Williamsburg again has won the prestigious Golf Magazine Premier Resort Gold Medal for 2014-2015 and continues its longstanding position among elite resorts throughout North America.

Golf Magazine's biannual rankings are based on four criteria: golf, lodging, food and beverage and service. "But challenging layouts and tee-box panoramas come first in our book," said Golf Magazine's Joe Passov. Forty percent of the resort recognition is based on golf, where voters considered factors such as challenge, playability, scenery, history, facilities and service. The rest of the score was equally weighed among lodging, food and drink and overall service at the resorts.

"It is such an honor to again be recognized by Golf Magazine," said John Hallowell, president of the Colonial Williamsburg Hospitality Company. "To receive the Premier Resort Gold Medal recognizes Colonial Williamsburg, its historic Golden Horseshoe Golf Courses, Williamsburg Inn and The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg as the unique representation of America's historic past and 21st-century modern present that it is today."

The Golden Horseshoe Gold Course, built by master golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1963, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. His son Rees Jones designed the adjacent Golden Horseshoe Green Course in 1998. The nine-hole Spotswood Course rounds out Colonial Williamsburg's historic links offerings. Golf, hotel and spa revenues support The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, keeping this vital piece of American history alive and thriving.

"The rugged land that John D. Rockefeller Jr. envisioned for golf at Colonial Williamsburg yielded two dramatic golf courses - the challenging, renowned Gold, and my newer ruggedly beautiful Green," said Rees Jones. "Golf Magazine's Gold Medal Award reaffirms the fact that these two golf courses have stood the test of time."

In recognizing the 100 greatest golf destinations in North America, Golf Magazine lists only properties that excel in course design and playability, while providing luxurious accommodations. Golf Magazine has been ranking resorts around the world for more than 20 years. The "Premier Resorts" issue is now available in print and online at www.golf.com.
