One of the bits of information I picked up at a district meeting was a request that we urge our members to get involved in church and Knights of Columbus related activities. And, we have been asked to report the kinds of things are members are doing. So, if you are involved in any of those activities, please call our council telephone number (810.235.6333) and leave a message. Someone will get back to you. Or you could drop a note in the mail at Knights of Columbus Council 695, 2415 Bagley St., Flint, MI 48504 and list your involvement, whether one or a number of activities. Some of those activities could include Special Olympics, North End Soup Kitch- en, St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center, Catholic Charities, St. Joseph Guild, work around your parish, Eucharistic Minister, Altar Server, Usher at Mass. You get the idea. Let us know about your involvement. (Incidentally, Council 695 is updating its telephone system so we can respond more quickly to your telephone messages.) One upcoming church activity you can add to your list is the Diocesan Assembly planned September 22 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. There is a report on the assembly on page 5 of this month’s Colum- bus Crusader. We have all been urged to attend and for Knights the event holds extra meaning since the Knights of Columbus is a sponsor and committed to helping coordinate the 3.5-mile Eucharistic proces- sion from St. Mary Cathedral to the Breslin Center on the Michigan State University campus. The main thing Neal Roche, past faithful navigator of Msgr. Dunigan Assembly 510, remembers about his mother “is that she never gave up.” He said despite losing her left arm in a freakish automobile accident while living with her husband, Cornelius F. Roche, Sr., in New York City early in their marriage, the former Joan Beverly Ford didn’t let that stop her from living a full life. She not only raised five children, including Neal, Jr., but was a bowler, artist, bridge player, active in her parish and a force to be reckoned with on the golf course. As a member of Atlas Valley Golf Course, Mrs. Roche won numerous trophies and inspired others with her long drives and low scores. Mr. and Mrs. Roche also traveled in Europe and the South Pacific and later in life split their time between Michigan and Florida. She died July 25, 2015 at Genesys Regional Medical Center at age 87. The funeral was held July 29 in Holy Family Church, Grand Blanc.

PFN Roche Remembers his Mother She is survived by her husband, four of her surviving children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Like her son, Neal, she wrote poetry. Neal, Jr., said one day in 1965 she came to Neal and announced: “This is what I wrote. What do you think?” The family thought so much of that untitled work that they had it printed on her prayer card at her death. It reads”

A bit of earth, a treeA stone worn down

A daughter, a wife, a mother

One of the time-honored traditions of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus is to pay hom-age in honoring a deceased Brother Knight with a Memorial Chalice and Chalice Ceremony. When a Fourth Degree member in good standing passes away, a chalice is donated in his memory to a reli-gious order or organization.

The beautiful Chalice Ceremony is conducted as part of the deceased Sir Knight’s wake or funeral vigil. A chalice, engraved with the Sir Knight’s name, is presented to the family, used in the memo-rial Mass, and then delivered to the recipient by a representative of the assembly.

We’re Honored to Provide Memorial Chalice, CeremonyFaithful Navigator’s Report --

My Brother Sir Knights in CHRIST,

The sacred vessels consist of a gold chalice and a gold paten. A satin cloth with emblem and gold trim is used to display the chalice and paten during the Chalice Ceremony.

It has come to my attention that we have had Brother Knights who have passed away that were not afforded these memorial ceremonies with which they may have been entitled to receiving. When these occur, it is usually the result of the surviving family members not knowing that their deceased loved one could have received these ceremonials. As a result, I am taking this opportunity to remind each of you that there are ceremonies which may be afforded after your passing and ask you to share this information with your family members in order to ensure they are aware of your entitlements from the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. In the event of a death in the family of a qualified member of the Knights of Columbus, Patrick R. Priest Says Knights’ Work Important during These Challenging Times With a weakening of faith commitment particularly in America, Father Roy Horning told Knights of Columbus council officers that Knights play a key role in supporting and promoting the Catholic Church in their communities. Speaking at a Mass preceding installation of officers of District 60 on August 9, at Holy Rosary Church, Father Horning used the Feast of Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) to note that the Catholic Church is still being persecuted as it was in Edith Stein’s Nazi Germany. He also said people are falling away from the Church. “This generation is turning away from the Church,” he said in his homily at the 6:30 p.m. concelebrated Mass, asking, “This should frighten us?” adding:“What will happen down the road in this country with no moral compass to guide us? That’s why it’s so important what the Knights do in behalf of the Church.” The Mass, concelebrated by Father Carl Simon, was held on the feast day of Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who was born Edith Stein on Oct. 12, 1891 into an Orthodox Jewish family in Wroclaw, Poland. Edith Stein became a college professor who converted to Catholicism in 1922 and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. She and her sister, Rosa, an external repre-sentative of the monastic Carmelites, were moved to the Netherlands for their safety during World War II but the Nazis arrested them on August 2, 1942 and took them to the Auschwitz concentration camp where they died in a gas chamber on August 9, 1942. Father Horning said what is happening in the Church today “is very disheartening but it’s in God’s province.” He urged Knights and their families not to be discouraged despite the situation. “It’s up to us to get out to save souls, not for us but it’s for His Glory,’’ he instructed. “We shouldn’t get discouraged,” Father Horning said. “Let’s not worry about it, God is on our side. He will see us through this period. Let us put on the mind of Christ.” The readings for the Mass were from the Book of St. Jeremiah and the Gospel of St. Matthew on Peter’s declaration about Jesus, where Jesus asked his disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” District Deputy Edward Warren installed officers from the five councils in his District 60. In addition to Msgr. Dunigan Council 695, others are Father Blasko Council 8245, Flint Township, Council 8489 Flushing, Fr. Gauthier Council 10170 Burton, and Most Blessed Sacrament Council 11532, Burton.

For more than a half-century the Flint area Knights of Columbus Chorus has been providing music for a wide range of activities from liturgical, social, fraternal and athletic events. The chorus accepts invitations to perform at various func-tions. Now it is looking to expand its membership by inviting eligible Catholic men to join its ranks. Bro. Knight Jim Lusty, Chorus record-ing secretary, said the 23-member group was organized in 1964 as a recreational and service arm of Msgr. Dunigan Council 695. The Chorus, known as the Singing Knights, has openings for men with various range of voices who enjoy singing while serving the Church and the Knights of Columbus. “A lot of men don’t realize they have singing voices because they think they have to sing solo,” explained Bro. Knight Lusty, “but, that’s not the case. We have men with various qualities of musical sound that blend in nicely with a group.” “We can fit them in so they can become part of a great musical sound that is enjoyed by audiences at the events where we perform during the year,” he added. “Men that already belong to a parish choir think that they can’t belong to the Singing Knights also, but we don’t sing Masses every weekend, and we understand if you’re not able to attend every event.”

Singing Knights Looking to Add New Members Although started at Council 695, the Singing Knights now have expanded to include Knights from a number of area councils. They have members from North Branch to Ortonville, the Lansing area and to Gaines. They perform on various oc-casions in this general area, and in earlier times had almost 40 members. The chorus practices each Wednesday after Labor Day through Memorial Day from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the St. John the Evangelist Parish Family Center in Davison. “We conclude our practices with prayer and intentions, Bro. Knight Lusty said. “Our first practice will be Sept. 5. We meet at 7:30 for pizza. Come and join us with no obligation to see how much fun we have. “ For more information, call Jim Lusty at
