This edition of the Graham Health System’s Community Check up focuses on the new addition at Graham Medical Group (Canton) Clinic. While the main facility is just six years old, we are fortunate to be growing at a pace that dictated we add extra space for additional services and providers. We are proud of the unique model we have at Graham Health System. A very strong hospital and clinic network and ancillary services (Home Medical Equipment, Home Health & Hospice, School of Nursing, Cardiac Rehab/Wellness, and Foundation) that are partnered with a very strong multi-specialty physician group (Coleman Medical Associates), and together we have grown very successfully in this model over the 17 years of this partnership. We feel incredibly confident that by working in concert, the Board of Trustees, Medical Staff and Administration will guide Graham to greater collaboration and successes in the future. While other organizations may have, or may be contemplating, becoming part of a larger integrated delivery system, we feel we are best able to fulfill our mission through independence and local governance.As our outpatient volumes continue to grow, you will see more and more services oriented towards the outpatient practice of medicine;

hence the need to either build new or remodel current facilities to meet these changing needs. Two decades ago, the majority of what we did was inpatient focused. A decade ago, it was a 50/50 split. Today, fully 80% of what we do under the Graham umbrella of care is outpatient oriented.

We have a number of other projects that have, or soon will, “kick off” this Fall, and all follow this same theme. Our next major project, two years in length, is a small 7,000 sq. ft. addition, and then the complete remodel of the existing 20,000 sq. ft. Surgery Suite. Add to that, a Lobby renovation, a full remodel of our Laboratory, and a complete upgrade to our electrical infrastructure, and you can see we will be busy with ongoing construction well into 2018. We are blessed to have the need and the resources to maintain and upgrade our facilities on a well-planned, logical basis. We appreciate all the consideration/patience that you, as a patient, family member, visitor or employee, give us through the noise, dust and restricted access. As always, thanks for your

unwavering support of Graham Health System and all of our caregivers.

Sincerely yours,

Bob SenneffPresident& CEO

This particular Saturday morning (August 27th) proved to be a ‘REEL’ success for lots of anglers who participated in the inaugural fishing tournament at Giant Goose Ranch in Canton sponsored by

Graham Hospital Foundation.

We kicked the morning off with Abby Krock gloriously singing The U.S. National Anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” for us. The weather cooperated, the kiddos had a great time fishing Inspiration Pond and jumping around on the inflatables, and the competitive fishermen (and women) enjoyed casting their lines on the picturesque 121-acre Giant Goose Lake.

Sixteen 2-person boats entered the competitive fishing portion, and three lucky teams scored big!

3rd Place, for $250, went to Galen Hanson & Aaron Geheber2nd Place, for $500, went to Nathan Judy & Jared Whitlow1st place, for $1,000, went to Frank Campbell & Greg LingenfelterFor the kiddos, Wyatt Calvert was the lucky winner of a 6-month membership to the YMCA (Canton), while Noah Herman and Caleb Hartstirn both won bowling passes to Bass Pro Shops. The 50/50 winner for the day was Connie Robbins.

Proceeds from this event are being used to help “TACKLE” childhood obesity through our Graham Wellness Center. We truly appreciate the help of our

volunteers, all of our attendees and participants, and definitely our MANY sponsors, which include:

“I was very pleased with the overall visit as it was an emergency situation. I was especially pleased with Dr. Shaw and his ability. I was also extremely pleased that a small hospital like Graham Hospital is able to have an ENT on staff, which

made it a thousand times better than having to be transferred in that type of situation to a bigger hospital.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Every year, about 140,000 Americans

Six, count ‘em….JUST SIX (6) SHORT YEARS AGO, we put the finishing

touches on the newly constructed 4 story, 68,200 square foot building at 180 S. Main St., commonly known as “Graham Medical Group (GMG) – Canton.” While we discussed the need for additional space at that time, we knew it would be at least five years out before it was “a must.” Around year three, we started looking at options and got serious about the addition two years ago. Today, we are overjoyed to see the 35,700 square foot addition which includes a new Convenient Care Clinic, Outpatient Rehabilitation Services: Physical, Speech & Occupational Therapies, Warm Water Therapy Pool, Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab Center, Illinois Cancer Care, and three additional physician “pods,” become a reality for our community. Carolyn Jacobus, VP of Clinic Operations, excitedly shared, “In the past 6 years, we have opened new facilities in Canton, Farmington and Lewistown. Our newest addition provides an entrance into the north side of our building that takes you directly into our Convenient Care Clinic., which not only has a new space, but

expanded hours as well, to better serve our patients’ needs.

Convenient Care hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 8:30 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. With the addition of three new midlevels, Convenient Care will always be staffed with two providers at all times to accommodate scheduled appointments and walk-in patients. We have a great team of midlevels that work closely with the medical staff to ensure continuity of care.”

Natural light, ahhh...so refreshing! After being housed in the basement

at Graham Hospital for many years, the Rehabilitation Services (Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapies) staff could not be more delighted to be surrounded by windows, illuminating their patient care area. Along with the new space, comes a new way of providing therapy to those who might benefit – Aquatic Therapy. “We are especially thrilled to have the addition of a 14’ x 20’ warm water therapy pool. That is something that we have wanted to offer our patients for a number of years. It has a mechanical lift to assist patients in and out of the pool if they are unable to safely negotiate the steps. It also has multiple (four) depths to accommodate different heights of patients as well as various programs that might be prescribed to meet individual needs,” said Mary

Bradley, Director of Rehabilitation Services. In addition to the pool, there are several new pieces of equipment

that will expand our ability to provide care for our patients. One of those is a set of height and width electric adjustable parallel bars, which can quickly be sized for the individual

patient. Mary emphasized, “We look forward to working with our community members in our state-of-the-art space!”The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation staff and patients alike are very excited about the new space. “We have always wanted a walking track for our patients, and today, that is a reality, and is being accompanied by brand new, top-of-the-line exercise equipment,” remarked Andy French, Director of Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Patients who have a challenging time walking independently for a distance, have also already relayed their appreciation of the assisted patient parking services that will accommodate them right at our main entrance. Andy continued,

“The proximity we will now have to physical therapy also provides a long list of benefits, for both patient populations. This is a once in a lifetime relocation, and we couldn’t be more energized about it.”

President & CEO of Graham Health System, Bob Senneff, profoundly expressed, “Of all the areas that we will occupy with our newest GMG Addition, the new Illinois Cancer Care suite is the one I’m most proud of. For those folks dealing with this horrific disease we call cancer, our ability to serve them in this state-of-the-art facility is just so rewarding. The ease of access to the suite - via a convenient new parking lot, valet parking, a dedicated elevator, and a warm, inviting family lobby, a new open treatment area with natural sunlight on 3 sides, are all stark differences from the ‘old suite’ housed on the third floor of Graham Hospital. I believe staff, families, and most importantly patients will be amazed how the facility turned out. Graham and Illinois Cancer Care have had a long, successful relationship, and we are proud to partner with them on this new venture.” Additional providers and services, most relocating from the Ground Floor at Graham Hospital, include: Illinois Neurological Institute (INI); Illinois Lung; Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehab (IPMR); Rheumatology (Dr. Mark Getz); and, Urology (Dr. Alan DeBord) are now located on the Second Floor at GMG. Dr. Jimmie Smith (Internal Medicine), a Graham provider since 1993, has been seeing patients on the third floor at Graham Hospital, is now located at Graham Medical Group in Pod 3C.We value the hard work, skill, professionalism and expertise of the staff at PJ Hoerr, and have proudly partnered with them for over fifteen

years to complete dozens of projects totaling tens of millions of dollars, including this latest clinic building. Scott Rinkenberger, Director & Project Executive at PJ Hoerr, shared, “We at PJ Hoerr are thankful to be part of a successful, growing healthcare organization like Graham. This most recent addition was particularly enjoyable due to some unique features like the therapy pool, rehab gym and radius front entrance foyer. Most importantly, we value the personal relationships we have developed with those at Graham and throughout the community. We are blessed to be on the ‘Graham team’ and look forward to a great future together.”

While we feel fairly comfortable that our latest GMG addition will meet the community’s needs for the next five years, we will continue to review those projects annually. As

more and more of our business converts from Inpatient to Outpatient, the GMG Clinic facilities will play a bigger and bigger role in our Integrated Delivery System.

We invite and warmly welcome you to attend our Business After Hours & ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 20th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We will be offering tours of the new addition, and will have a variety of hors d’oeuvres and beverages, as well as “goodies” and give-aways. We hope to see you there!
