It springs from spiritual darkness which has its roots in sinful human nature, and Muslim terrorists find safe haven among many who are following Islam. Islam denies that Jesus is God or was crucified and is risen. The Bible calls this denial of the person and work of Jesus Christ the “spirit of the antichrist” (1John 4:1-3). Although Islam is not the only ideology denying the person and work of Christ, in order to assess spiritual realities for effective prayer we must understand that it is diametrically opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Second, Muslim terrorists are trapped in this “antichrist” system. Muslims are those who follow the example and teachings of Mohammed, the founder of Islam. Muslim terrorists justify their acts of terror with specific examples from Mohammad’s life and teaching. They are victims of the very fear and confusion which they themselves spread. Third, the state as the institution ordained by God to “bear the sword” for the purpose of justice (Romans 13:4), has a divine responsibility to stop terrorists with violence. Christians should be involved in the government, but when they participate in war and law enforcement in pursuit of justice they do so as agents of the government and not of the church. Fourth, the church does not “bear the sword.” It speaks prophetically and without violence as a conscience to hold the government accountable to its God given responsibility. And it intercedes as Jesus taught (Matthew 6:10) that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Therefore, the actions of the military and law enforcement do not represent the fullness of response which God expects of his people and the church. In other words, if the body of Christ responds to Muslim terrorism by only participating in the actions of the government, then it fails in its responsibility at this crucial time. So what can Christians do? How can the Church respond? What is the role of the body of Christ? Every Christian can . Some can do more, but everyone can pray. Here are some ways that Christians can pray about Islamic terrorism and pray for Muslim terrorists. One: Since the government has the responsibility to bear the sword, Christians should pray that God would grant success in pursuing justice by tracking down and catching terrorists. Such pursuit is physically and spiritually dangerous, so Christians can pray for those risking their lives and those working hard behind the scenes to promote justice against evil doers. Two: Since Islamic terrorism is designed to cause fear and confusion, Christians should pray that God will counter with gifts of courage and wisdom. Three: Since Muslim terrorists are trapped in spiritual darkness, Christians should pray that God will open their hearts and minds to truth and light. How many are praying for Osama bin Laden and other Muslim terrorists? The New Testament tells about a terrorist named Saul of Tarsus who was dramatically changed when he met Jesus Christ. I personally know a number of former Muslims who fought for the Islamic cause. They, and many others in our generation, are now our brothers and sisters in Christ! Finally, prayer is not the role of the government. It is up to us as the body of Christ to pray about terrorism and for the Muslim terrorists.

Shadowy zealots are investing great resources into planning and executing acts of violence on a mass scale.

Their intention to manipulate public policy through the resulting fear and confusion is called terrorism.

How should Christians

by John Marion, Director, Truth for Muslims (www.TruthForMuslims.com)

First, terrorism is a great evil. Itsprings from spiritual darkness which has its roots in sinful human nature, andMuslim terrorists find safe haven amongmany who are following Islam.

Islam denies that Jesus is God or wascrucified and is risen. The Bible calls thisdenial of the person and work of JesusChrist the “spirit of the antichrist” (1John 4:1-3). Although Islam is not theonly ideology denying the person andwork of Christ, in order to assess spiritualrealities for effective prayer we mustunderstand that it is diametrically opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Second, Muslim terrorists are trapped in this “antichrist” system.Muslims are those who follow theexample and teachings of Mohammed, thefounder of Islam. Apostasy Case in Malaysia Turns Uglyby Sarah Page from Compass Direct

Lina Joy, a Malaysian convert toChristianity, has gone into hiding afterextremists issued death threats against herand the lawyers supporting her cause.

Escalating furor over the latest stagein Joy’s lengthy struggle to change herreligious status has led Prime MinisterAbdullah Ahmad Badawi to order a haltto all public debate on the issue. Despiteconverting to Christianity 16 years ago, in 1990, Joy is still legally identified as a Muslim.

Joy, previously known as Azlina bintiJailani, requested a name change from theNational Registration Department (NRD)in 1997. The NRD granted the namechange in October 1999 but retained theMuslim status on her new identity card.

Malaysian law requires all Muslims to be declared as such on their identitycards; the religion of non-Muslims,however, is not specified.

When challenged, the NRD said itcould not change Joy’s religious statuswithout a declaration from the Islamic law (sharia) court that she had become an “apostate.”

Conversion out of Islam (“apostasy”)is either forbidden or regarded as acriminal offense under most state Islamiclaws. In Malaysia, “apostates” may befined, detained and imprisoned. For thisreason, many Christian converts inMalaysia choose to remain secretconverts.

Joy, insisting that as a Christian shewas no longer subject to the sharia court, appealed the decision; but the High Courtand the Court of Appeal repeatedlydismissed her applications on the groundsthat the sharia court had not approved herrenunciation of Islam.

Finally, on April 13, the Federal Courtgranted Joy permission to appeal thegovernment’s decision. The court saidthere were “novel issues” to be argued inthe case and that the matter was of publicinterest.

When the case returned to court onJune 28, it sparked heated debate in theMalaysian press. Joy and her lawyerreceived death threats, eventuallyprompting Joy to go into hiding.

In mid-August, Joy’s mother made apublic appeal through local media outletUtusan Malaysia, saying, “Ali, comeback and return to the path. This is mywish and hope before I perform umrah[pilgrimage].”

Following the media uproar, ChiefJustice Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh AbdulHalim announced today that the FederalCourt would not rush into making adecision. “We have to consider thesubmissions of many parties,” he toldreporters.

Secular ConstitutionThe case is widely regarded as a

watershed for religious freedom inMalaysia. If the court orders the NRD todrop the word “Islam” from Joy’s identitycard, the move would affirm thesupremacy of the secular constitution.

Orthodox Muslims favor a status quodecision, however, affirming thesupremacy of Islam.

“If they rule against Lina Joy, thewhole question of religious liberty – thefreedom of conscience, choice, expressionand thought of an individual – will begreatly affected,” the Rev. Wong KimKong, secretary general of the NationalEvangelical Christian Fellowship ofMalaysia, told reporters.

While some Muslim groups supportmore freedom for would-be converts, other groups are highly resistant. Onegroup of Malaysian lawyers met on July 13 to establish a new association,Lawyers in Defense of Islam, to fight any loss of jurisdiction for the shariacourt.

The Defenders of Islam (FrontPembela Islam, or FPI) is also planning a nationwide campaign to counter the useof civil courts as a “way out of Islam,”according to Asia News.

Fearing civil unrest, Prime MinisterAbdullah Ahmad Badawi on July 25ordered all public debate on religiousissues to cease immediately.

On August 21, the prime minister alsorecommended that four states that havenot yet adopted laws to prevent the spreadof other faiths among Muslims should

draft them as soon as possible, theBernama news agency reported. Thosestates are the Federal Territories, Penang,Sabah and Sarawak.

Some news reports state that Joybecame a Christian in 1998, as somereligious traditions or denominations holdthat conversion is not complete untilbaptism. Joy became a Christian in 1990,but was not baptized until 1998; hence thediscrepancy in some reports.

Right to ConvertThe key issue in Joy’s case is the right

of Islamic courts to have sole jurisdictionin cases of conversion out of Islam.

Sulaiman Abdullah, representing theFederal Territory Religious Councilagainst Joy, argued in court that“apostasy” and conversion clearly qualifyas “Muslim affairs,” to be decided by thesharia court.

Sulaiman also said Muslims could notenter and leave Islam as freely as theadherents of other religions.

In response, Cyrus Das, Joy’s counsel, argued that Malaysia’s constitution placedsecularism before Islamic law. “Article 3does not make Islam the governing law,”Das said. Article 3 states that “Islam is the religion of the Federation; but otherreligions may be practiced in peace andharmony in any part of the Federation.”

Senior federal counsel Umi KalthumAbd Majid, representing the governmentand the NRD, insisted that Joy was notprohibited from renouncing her religion, according to the Malaysian Star.

“The issue,” Umi told the court, “isthat, in order to renounce Islam, she mustgo to the proper channels as provided bylaw. She cannot renounce her religion,Islam, at will.”

Constitutional expert and professorShad Saleem Faruqi summed up thedilemma facing the Federal Court in aninterview published by the Malaysiakininewspaper in July. “This nation cannot be a secular state when Muslims arecompelled to follow religious laws,” hesaid. “But at the same time, it is a secularstate for non-Muslims. It is a complexsituation.”

“Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam.”

Radical Christians Can TakeConsolation in Rosie’s Comparison

When defending her position on “The View” thatAmericans have no business combating Islamofacist ideology inAfghanistan and Iraq, Rosie O’Donnell drew applause with herremark, “Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radicalIslam.”

To activists for gay marriage, embryonic stem cell research, and late term abortion, Christians who embrace the Bible’sliteral language and vote their convictions actually are morethreatening than Muslims who oppress women, behead captives, threaten Israel, and conduct genocide in Darfur. Proximitytrumps intensity. The burglar coming through your windowcreates more anxiety than the serial killer across town. Thisprinciple of perspective – in which near objects appear largerthan distant ones – explains why hatred for Bush, anEvangelical Christian, exceeds loathing for terrorists so thatindiscretions at Abu Graib receive more outrage thanbeheadings of captives.

Activist Christians who are deeply disturbed by Rosie’sassertion, audience applause, and ABC complicity can consolethemselves with widespread opposition to this war. The day thatgay and abortion activists and their sympathizers in the pressand entertainment industry wholeheartedly support global waron terrorists will be dark for Christians who presently constitutean equal threat. What will they want done to radical Christianswhen radical Muslims become fair game?

Western progressives perceive two enemies – one within andone without. By denying the dangers of radical Islam they canfixate on defeating Evangelical Christianity. Creating sympathyfor the enemy outside helps them focus on the one inside.

Part of helping Americans respond to the threat of radicalIslam involves exposing this kind of distortion present in ourown culture war.

Rosie has said out loud what many people think. Herperspective coincides with a general lack of enthusiasm forconfronting the genocidal version of Islam. Rosie wants sobadly to believe that fundamentalist Christians andfundamentalist Muslims are the same that she must treat themthe same regardless of evidence and circumstances. TreatingMuslims and Christians differently implies that fundamentaldifferences exist between fundamentalists. I hate to imaginewhat it might take for Rosie to embrace war against radicalIslam without simultaneously embracing war against radicalChristians?

British Muslims Express Outrage.

Pope Inflames Muslims Around the WorldBy John Piper. © Desiring God. Website: www.desiringGod.org. Email: [email protected]. Toll Free: 1.888.346.4700.

Whoever offends our ProphetMohammed should be killed on the spotby the nearest Muslim.” Those were thewords of Sheikh Abubakar Hassan Malinto a gathering of Muslims in Mogadishuon Friday, September 15, 2006.

On Saturday, Palestinians wieldingguns and firebombs attacked fiveChristian churches in the West Bank andGaza.

On Sunday, September 17, in London, outside Westminster Cathedral, AnjemChoudary addressed a demonstration andsaid that those who insulted Islam “shouldbe subject to capital punishment.”

These were among the reactions to aspeech given by Pope Benedict XVI atRegensburg University, in Germany onTuesday, September 12.

Perhaps connected to the speech wasthe murder on Sunday in Mogadishu ofsixty-six-year-old Leonella Sgorbati, anItalian Catholic nun serving as a nurse in a children’s hospital.

In the speech, the pope was addressingthe foundation of the secular university. The subject was faith and reason. He wasarguing that the foundation of theuniversity, and the spread of truth andfaith, lay in the rationality of God.

He asked, “Is the conviction thatacting unreasonably contradicts God’snature merely a Greek idea, or is it alwaysand intrinsically true?”

He answers, “I believe that here wecan see the profound harmony betweenwhat is Greek, in the best sense of theword, and the biblical understanding offaith in God.”

In other words, the pope is arguingthat the university, and all people, have an obligation to act in accordance withreason, because reason is rooted in God.

At this point, he brought in adiscussion of the difference betweenIslam and Christianity on the relationshipbetween God and reason.

Christianity, he argues, sees reason asrooted in God. But, citing a noted FrenchIslamist R. Arnaldez, he says that “IbnHazn went so far as to state that [in Islam]God is not bound even by his own word,

and that nothing would oblige him toreveal the truth to us. Were it God’s will,we would even have to practice idolatry.”

This, he implies, disconnects God and reason and opens Islam to a use ofviolence in spreading their faith that is not governed by reason. He cites Sura2:256 from the Qur’an, whereMohammed says that there is nocompulsion in religion. Then he drawsattention to the later developments in the Qur’an by quoting the Byzantineemperor Manuel II Paleologus in 1391 in Ankara (today’s capital of Turkey).

The emperor apparently said thatMohammed taught that one could “spread by the sword the faith hepreached.” Then the pope said, “Theemperor goes on to explain in detail thereasons why spreading the faith throughviolence is something unreasonable.

Violence is incompatible with thenature of God and the nature of the soul. . . . God is not pleased by blood, andnot acting reasonably is contrary to God’snature. Faith is born of the soul, not thebody. Whoever would lead someone tofaith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence andthreats. . . . To convince a reasonablesoul, one does not need a strong arm, orweapons of any kind, or any other meansof threatening a person with death. . .”

The decisive statement in thisargument against violent conversion isthis: not to act in accordance with reasonis contrary to God’s nature.

These references to the role of reasonin Islam, and the apparent endorsement ofviolence (in parts of the Qur’an) as a wayof spreading Islamic faith, have outragedMuslims and sparked violence and callsfor violence.

Subsequently, the pope said, “I amdeeply sorry for the reactions in somecountries to a few passages of my addressat the University of Regensburg, whichwere considered offensive to thesensibility of Muslims. These in fact werea quotation from a medieval text, whichdo not in any way express my personalthought.”

How should Christians respond to this

situation? I will suggest ten responses thatflow from the Bible.

1. Admit that the Christian church has often been too entangled with civilgovernments, with the result that violencehas been endorsed by the church as a wayof accomplishing religious, and not justcivil, goals. The Crusades, for example, stand as a monument to collectiveChristian blindness to the teaching ofJesus. We should make every effort todayto avoid political alignments between theChristian church and any civilgovernment or political party. (See myarticle, “Tolerance, Truth-Telling,Violence, and Law” in the ResourceLibrary at www.desiringgod.org.) 2. Make clear that the use ofGod-sanctioned violence between Israeland the nations in the Old Testament is nolonger God’s will for his people. Thecoming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, as asuffering servant, rather than a warlord, and his gathering of a people from allnations rather than only one, are two ofthe many reasons why the Christianchurch today should not—and almostuniversally does not—endorse or useviolence to promote the gospel of JesusChrist.

And How Should Christians Respond?continued from page 4

3. Admit that there are many Muslimstoday who do not approve of violence inthe spread of Islam. Admittedly, to manyof us in the West, their number seemssmall and their voice seems muted by thereputation of the more violent strains ofIslam. We do not know how large thatsegment of Islam is.

4. Point out how Islam, in its mostsacred writings and authoritativeteachings, belittles Jesus Christ, not justoccasionally in the news, but constantly by its dominant claims. Islam denies thatJesus Christ was and is God, a centraltruth of the New Testament and theChristian church (John 1:1-3; Colossians2:9; Hebrews 1:8). Dominant streams ofIslam deny that Jesus died on the crossand therefore deny that the claim that hisdeath atones for sin and propitiates thewrath of God is true (1 Corinthians15:1-3; Romans 3:21-26; Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18). Therefore, defendersof Islam daily defame Jesus Christ andinsult the glory of his gospel.

5. Point out that, in response to thisconstant defamation of Jesus Christ, thereare no public threats or demands forapologies. This is not because we do notlove Jesus above all things, or because wehave no zeal for the glory of his name. Itis because he told us to expect this(Matthew 10:25; John 15:20) and thenmodeled for us how to react: “When hewas reviled, he did not revile in return;when he suffered, he did not threaten, butcontinued entrusting himself to him whojudges justly” (1 Peter 2:23).

6. Do good to those who hate you—and, of course, those of other faiths whodon’t hate you (Luke 6:27). This is notbecause Christians do not believe invengeance. We simply believe that it isnot ours to give. And this age is not thetime to give it. This is an age of mercyand patience and forgiveness toward thosewho malign the King of the universe. Hewill have his Day of Wrath. But we aretoo sinful to be entrusted with thatrighteous judgment. Rather, we shouldobey the words of the New Testament:“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, butleave it to the wrath of God, for it is

written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ To the contrary, ‘if yourenemy is hungry, feed him; if he isthirsty, give him something to drink; forby so doing you will heap burning coalson his head’” (Romans 12:19-20).

7. Seek to win others to saving faith in Jesus by persuading with words, notimposing with force. This was the waythe gospel spread among many religionsin the early centuries of the Christianchurch. The earliest teachers said,“Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others” (2 Corinthians5:11). When the New Testament speaksof the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians6:17) or “the weapons of our warfare” (2 Corinthians 10:4), it clearly means the word of God and power of spiritualpersuasion.

8. Always be ready to die, but never to kill, for the sake of commending JesusChrist as the Son of God who died forsinners and rose again as the Lord of theuniverse. Jesus promises to triumphthrough our accepting suffering, not ourcausing suffering. He died to save all whowill believe—from every nation andreligion. He calls us to follow him on thisCalvary Road. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earthand dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, itbears much fruit” (John 12:24). This isnot the death of a suicide-murderer. Thisis the death of one who loves his enemies

and, as he dies, prays, “Father, forgivethem, for they know not what they do”(Luke 23:34), and, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60).

9. Pray for the salvation of all thosewho belittle Jesus Christ. Pray that theywould put their faith in Jesus Christ whodied for our sins so that if anyone—fromany nation or any religion—wouldembrace him as Lord and Savior andTreasure of their lives, they would besaved from the guilt of sin and the wrathof God. They would have eternal life andjoy. This is the way the great apostle Paulprayed: “Brothers, my heart’s desire andprayer to God for them is that they maybe saved” (Romans 10:1).

10. No matter the cost, continue toexalt and commend Jesus Christ as thegreat and only Savior that he is. Say withthe apostle Paul, “It is my eagerexpectation and hope that I will not be atall ashamed, but that with full couragenow as always Christ will be honored inmy body, whether by life or by death. Forto me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”The day will come when every knee willbow to Jesus as Lord and as God(Philippians 2:10-11). Until that daycomes, affirm with Paul: “I do notaccount my life of any value nor asprecious to myself, if only I may finishmy course and the ministry that I receivedfrom the Lord Jesus, to testify to thegospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24).

Doomsday Prophecies Impact Modern MuslimsWhile Bible prophecy encourages Christians to endure hardship as they eagerly await Jesus’ second coming, Qur’anicapocalyptic literature reinforces a triumphalistic perspective that encourages militancy. The text below, which istranscribed from a streaming video posted at HarunYahya.com, reveals disturbing correlations between the awaited Mahdiand expected Antichrist. The video is based on a book by Harun Yahya titled, The End Times and the Mahdi.

The end times: according to Islam, this conceptrepresents a time near to doomsday when Qur’anicmorality will come to prevail over all the world.

The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has described it in considerable detail in his Haddiths, thatis his sayings. After the prophet a numberof great Islamic scholars have givenfurther accounts of the subject. All ofthese reveal that the end times willcontain a number of consecutive events.

In the first stage of the end times, theworld will become degenerate because ofa number of philosophical systems thatdeny God. Mankind will move away fromthe purpose behind its creation, leading toa terrible spiritual emptiness and moralcollapse.

In the wake of great disasters, warsand suffering, mankind will seek the answer to just onequestion. Where does salvation lie?

At that very moment of despair, God will charge aspiritual entity to call mankind out of the chaos and on tothe true path, the Mahdi. The word means, “he who leadspeople to the truth.”

According to the prophet’s sayings, the Mahdi willfirst wage a struggle in the Islamic world, and returnthose Muslims who have broken away from the essenceof Islam back to true belief and morality.

He will have three basic tasks at this point. The overthrow of philosophical systems thatdeny God and support atheism, putting an endto practices that are not part of the religion butare portrayed as being so, and the revealingand implementation of true Islamic moralitybased on the Qur’an – starting with his ownnation and moving on to strengthen the entireIslamic world in political and social terms, establishing peace, well being, and security, and resolving social problems.

The progression in the end times wasdescribed in some detail by the prophetMuhammad in the Haddiths one thousand four

hundred years ago and in the works of various Islamicscholars. In addition, in our time, the portents of the endtimes are actually coming about one after the other. . . .This succession of all the events described hundreds ofyears ago in just the way that they were describedforetells the coming of the Mahdi in no uncertain terms.

AF Chapel Conducts Real World Missions

On June 4, 2005 a group of 24 from Keesler Air Force Baseset out on a journey that wouldimpact their lives forever. Theteam of various Air Forcepersonnel included a chaplain, two pilots, a doctor, twoorthodontists, an air trafficcontroller, a videographer, friends and family members. This mission was like no other. They weren’t going to Iraq or

Afghanistan to fight a war on terror. Instead they were going to Hondurus to help build a technical training facility for anorphanage and share their very lives with a group of peoplethey had never met.

Most military chapels don’t have missions programs, but in 2003 Chaplain Harvel challenged his congregation to gobeyond themselves to be ablessing to others around theworld. Since then the Keeslerchapel community has sent over125 people on mission trips toHonduras, the Philippines, theNavajo nation, and the inner cityof New Orleans. This was thechapel’s second mission toHonduras.

Before the trip Bryanremarked. “I met everybody herethrough a Perspectives class wetook on global missions. And itjust so happened that this trip was coming up right after thePerspectives class ended. I have a heart for missions so I’mexcited in that regard, but also just for the opportunity to workin an orphanage and to help children down there and to be partof the work that’s going on in Honduras.”

The chaplain said, “Here in Honduras they’re asking forour prayers and they’re asking for our partnership. They wantto partner with us so that we can work together for thekingdom. They consider us in America to be wealthy beyond

imagination. And theyare so thankful that wecome here and we investourselves in theirkingdom work amongtheir own indigenouspeople in their ownvillages. And it justboggles their mind thatwe would even do this.”

Afterwards Gary reported, “We had wonderfulopportunities to connect with the Honduran people. The dailyrains ensured that there was time for us to develop friendshipswith the orphan children and the Honduran constructionworkers. In the evenings we were able to reach out to childrenand adults all around the area. Often we were invited to shareour testimonies and one of our team members was eveninvited to preach at two different church services. TheHonduran people certainly welcomed us and were very eagerto listen to us talk about Jesus and share stories about Americaand our lives.

Aaron said, “This mission has really been an eye-openingexperience. It’s made me realize that I do care about otherpeople quite a bit. It’s going to shape the way that I minister to people back home. It’s going to give me a new heart forministry. It’s going to make me take advantage of theopportunities that God provides.”

Gary concluded, “We thought that we were going to go toHonduras to give the peopleof Honduras something. And we did. We madesignificant progress towardscompleting the technicaltraining school at theorphanage. But in reality itwas we who were changedthe most. We are the oneswho received so very muchthrough our time spent withthe beautiful people ofHonduras.”

Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West

Using their own words and their own television broadcasts, this feature length DVDdocuments the gravest threat to Western civilization since Adolf Hitler. Remarkablesimilarities in tactics (indoctrinating the youth) and agenda (exterminate the Jews)demonstrate how the spirit which animated the Nazis remains alive and well. Even thecartoons and conspiracy theories are unchanged. Just like so many ignored and appeasedHitler’s rise to power, popular opinion is ignoring and appeasing radical Islam. ModerateMuslims are as powerless against Islamofacism as moderate Germans were against Nazism.Every soul in America needs to process the contents of this documentary.
