Health Benefits of Using a Sauna

In the past few years, much attention has

been given to the health benefits of sauna

bathing. And for good reason – it’s exciting

to learn that relaxing in soothing heat is

fantastic for the body and mind.

It’s exhilarating to step into a sauna, as

intense heat penetrates the muscles, causing

a deep sweat. A detoxifying experience,

tension fades instantly while tight, stiff muscles relax as the body and mind reach

equilibrium.

When used as part of a daily regimen, sauna bathing can revive and hydrate the

skin, renew the spirit and leave you refreshed and rejuvenated – ready to face the

challenges that lie ahead. Here are just a few of the exciting health benefits to be

gained through sauna bathing.

Stress Relief - No one is immune from the damaging effect of elevated stress.

While we all feel tension from time to time (some stress is actually healthy), too

much stress is dangerous and can lead to more serious conditions.

The key to managing stress is to have an outlet for releasing built up tension that

creates unhealthy pockets of pain in the neck, shoulders and low back. Sauna

bathing provides instant and convenient stress relief by targeting tight muscles and

joints with sustained, elevated heat. Intense heat penetrates deep beneath the skin,

to relieve stiffness and tight muscles.

Soothe Muscular Aches and Pains - Arthritis, a chronic back condition, even

simple overuse can create aches and pains. Finding relief is priority one. Heat from

the sauna works to relieve pain is several ways. First, as high heat is absorbed, the

body responds by releasing endorphins, or “feel good” neurotransmitters. This

alleviates pain on contact, encouraging the body to relax.

As core body temperature rises, blood vessels dilate, which makes it easier for

oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to damaged cells. The process speeds up the

body’s natural healing process, which results in less pain – immediately and long

term.

Cleanse the Skin and Flush Toxins - It’s nothing new that our daily environment

is filled with harmful toxins. Bacteria, dirt, smoke, and harmful chemicals are

present in the air we breathe, even the water we drink. Much of the toxins we

absorb can be eliminated through the skin, and a

deep sweat in the sauna is the perfect solution.

In fact, deep sweating has proven health benefits,

reducing levels of lead, copper, zinc, mercury and

more that are present in our world. Sweat is also a

fantastic way to replace dead skin cells with new,

healthy cells. As bacteria is flushed out through the

uppermost layer of skin, improved circulation renews and energizes the skin for a

smooth, healthy, vibrant look.

Improved Sleep - Another common complaint that is easily resolved through

regular sauna bathing is lack of sleep. A quick few minutes in the sauna prior to

going to bed prepares the body to transition from awake to sleep peacefully. When

the body and mind are calm and relaxed, sleep comes naturally.

Weight Loss and Cardiovascular Conditioning - Believe it or not, relaxing in the

sauna has been shown to impact weight loss, with many people dropping a few

pounds simply by engaging in deep sweat two or three days a week. While water

weight is the first to drop from the body, prolonged and continued use can help

jump-start a fitness routine, with improved caloric burn, conditioning of the heart

and improved endurance.

The Difference Between Infrared

And Traditional Saunas

If you’ve been doing some preliminary research on saunas, you’ve likely come

across the terms “far-infrared” and “traditional”. While most people understand the

basics in terms of how sauna bathing works, few can differentiate between the two

basic types. Both infrared and traditional saunas deliver the same fantastic benefits

of heat bathing – relief from aches and pains, reduced stress, relaxation and

detoxifying sweat. But how each delivers heat is very different.

Once you understand exactly what each type

of sauna does and how, you’ll find it much

easier to narrow your choices to the one sauna

that fits your needs best. Remember, there will

likely always be debate as to which type of

sauna is best, but the one you use most is sure

to be the best choice for you.

Traditional Sauna - With lots of steam and very high heat, the traditional sauna is

the classic version most people envision when asked to describe heat bathing.

Users enter a heated room, which promotes a deep, detoxifying and healthy sweat.

Often described as “enveloped heat”, the temperature and humidity in a traditional

sauna are controlled by sprinkling water on hot stones or rocks inside the room.

Humidity level in the sauna is increased by pouring water over hot rocks, which

creates steam. Traditional sauna come in many designs for either indoor or

outdoor use.

Far-Infrared Sauna - With lower air temperature and radiant heat, a far-infrared

sauna delivers the same proven health benefits, but without steam or hot rocks to

maintain. The appeal of a far-infrared model is easy to understand as many sauna

enthusiasts prefer to heat bathe in cooler temperatures.

To be clear, the far-infrared version is still hot, but optimum temperature is

between 125-130 degrees F compared to 185-190 degrees F in a more traditional

sauna. Far-infrared models are ideal for spending longer periods of time in the

sauna, as infrared energy permeates the skin, warming muscles from the inside out.

With no hot rocks, the humidity level in a far-infrared sauna cannot be increased or

decreased manually. Far-infrared models are designed for indoor use only.

Traditional Sauna:

Very dry until water is sprinkled over hot rocks

Both temperature and humidity are adjustable by adding water to rocks

Relieves aches and pains, promotes relaxation

Encourages detoxifying perspiration

Relieves symptoms of sinus congestion from colds or allergies

Median temperature between 185-190 degrees F

30-40 minutes required to preheat rocks before use

10-15-minutes optimal time for use

Low energy use

Far Infrared Sauna:

Relatively dry with average humidity

Temperature is controllable, humidity is not

Relieves aches and pains, promotes relaxation

Encourages detoxifying perspiration

Optimum temperature between 125-130 degrees F

No pre-heat time required

10-15-minutes optimal time for use, but users often stay 25-30 minutes

Low energy use

SELECTING THE BEST SIZE

People in the market for a new sauna often wonder

how to select the most appropriate size for the

home. While there are multiple options available,

choosing the right size is critical for ensuring the

most enjoyment from your investment. After all, a

sauna that is too big is just as uncomfortable as one

that is too small. Here are a few things to consider

when assessing size.

Who will be using the sauna on a regular basis? - Think about how many people

will likely be using the sauna at one time. The typical traditional sauna is 6 feet by

5 feet, with upper and lower benches. Easily enough room for a family of four,

traditional saunas tend to be larger than far-infrared models, which require sitting

in close proximity to emitters. Because of this, traditional saunas tend to be more

social, as they can accommodate an entire family or small group easily, while far-

infrared models have limited opportunities to socialize.

Space requirements – Inside or Outside the Home -

Again, don’t make the mistake of planning your incredible

sauna retreat before first looking to ensure you have the

space requirements. Remember to allow for plenty of

room to get in and out of the sauna comfortably and to

access behind in the event your sauna needs maintenance.

Keep in mind, whether you choose to place your sauna

inside or outside the home, a smaller room will permit

using a smaller heater, smaller circuit breakers and even

provide more efficient heating. If you plan on laying down in your sauna, you’ll

need at least 6 feet in one direction, while ceiling space above 7 feet is typically

wasted. Either way, the options are unlimited and a sauna can go virtually

anywhere in the home, the basement, garage, bathroom etc.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND

OPERATING COSTS

The good news is, despite what you may have heard, an in home sauna is an

inexpensive luxury to operate, and may end up being one of the more energy

efficient assets in your home. While it’s impossible to provide the exact monthly

cost of operating a sauna in the home (there are several factors that contribute to

overall energy use), it is possible to offer an average and some comparisons to get

you thinking.

Basically, in order to get an estimate of monthly energy use and cost, you would

need to consider three things:

How often you use the sauna and for how long

The amp of the heater in the sauna

Average costs for electricity in your area

On average, if you use your sauna 3 times per week, a 6kW heater will cost

approximately $4 to $6 per month. On the other hand, a 2.1 kW heater would use

considerably less at a cost of approximately $2 per month. Far-infrared saunas

typically use $3 to $5 per month. A good rule of thumb? For most families, the

cost to run an in home sauna is less than the typical costs to run a washer and

dryer.
