His research is focused on improving decision-making at the end of life and is supported by the National Institute of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation. He received his BA in philosophy from Harvard College, his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine, and a masters of public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Following medical school, Dr. Volandes completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed fellowships in medical ethics at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was named the Edmond J. Safra Faculty Fellow in 2004- 05 at the Harvard University Center for Ethics. Dr. Volandes is also co-founder and president of Advance Care Planning (ACP) Decisions, a non-profit foundation implementing systems and technologies to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in the health-care system. His first book was recently released by Bloomsbury Press and is titled, The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care. Ms. Patricia Bowles is an award-winning communications professional with expertise in public affairs, media and government relations, advocacy and marketing.

She has held senior executive positions with TELUS and Westcoast Energy and also served as a political and policy advisor for the federal and provincial governments. Most recently, she was the director of communications and education at the BC Securities Commission.

Prior to joining the commission in 2006, Ms. Bowles was a senior consultant for BC’s Ministry of Attorney General providing advice on messaging for trials in BC’s Supreme and Provincial courts, in particular the Air India and Pickton trials.

Before moving to BC, Ms. Bowles was an owner and director of McLaren McCann Advertising in Toronto where she consulted for a number of clients in the health-care field.

William S. ClarkLLB

Partner, Harper Grey

As one of Canada’s leading lawyers in the area of health-care law, regulated professionals rely on Mr. William S. Clark to provide practical advice on regulatory and disciplinary matters. His knowledge of how regulations such as the Health Professions Act are typically applied, and how professionals often structure their practice, allow for very reliable advocacy.

Mr. Clark represents clients in both civil and regulatory matters. He has acted as counsel for most types of professionals, including physicians, dentists, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, engineers and nurses.

Mr. Clark earned his law degree from the University of Victoria and was called to the Bar in 1989. Currently, he is a senior partner at Harper Grey LLP where he chairs the professional regulation group and serves as assistant chair of the firm’s health law group.

Gurdeep ParharMD

Executive Associate Dean, Clinical Partnerships and Professionalism, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia

Dr. Gurdeep Parhar received his MD from the University of Calgary in 1992 and completed his postgraduate training at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. A recognized medical educator, Dr. Parhar has taught extensively on the topics of professionalism, equity, cultural safety, psychosocial aspects of health care, and medical disability. Currently serving as executive associate dean, clinical partnerships and professionalism at the UBC Faculty of Medicine, he provides strategic leadership and coordination between the Faculty of Medicine and its partners, including the health authorities, government, other academic institutions, professional associations and regulatory authorities.

Additionally, he serves as principal investigator on several educational innovation grants employing inter-professional models to address issues important to underserved populations, particularly Indigenous Peoples.

He is a board member at the College and focuses his clinical practice on immigrants, refugees, workers’ health and patients with severe disabilities.

PLENARY SESSION

Professor Timothy Caulfield is a Canada research chair in health law and policy and a professor in the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. He has been the research director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta since 1993.

Over the past several years he has been involved in a variety of interdisciplinary research endeavours that have allowed him to publish over 300 articles and book chapters. He is a fellow of the Trudeau Foundation and the principal investigator for a number of large interdisciplinary projects that explore the ethical, legal and health policy issues associated with a range of topics, including stem cell research, genetics, patient safety, the prevention of chronic disease, obesity policy, the commercialization of research, complementary and alternative medicine and access to health care.

Professor Caulfield is and has been involved with a number of national and international policy and research ethics committees, including: Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee; Genome Canada’s Science Advisory Committee; the Ethics and Public Policy Committee for International Society for Stem Cell Research; and the Federal Panel on Research Ethics. He has won numerous academic awards and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

He writes frequently for the popular press on a range of health and science policy issues and is the author of The Cure for Everything: Untangling the Twisted Messages about Health, Fitness and Happiness (Penguin 2012) and Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash (Penguin 2015).

Andrew ClarkeMD, DOHS

Executive Director, Physician Health Program

Dr. Andrew Clarke has been the executive director of the Physician Health Program of BC since 2008. Prior to that he practised occupational medicine for more than 20 years in Toronto, where his research interests focused on the social psychology of the workplace.

He is a graduate of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, and has completed a master of arts in education at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Clarke is a member of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare.

Ailve M. McNestryMB, CCFP

Deputy Registrar, College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia

Dr. Ailve McNestry obtained her medical degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland and completed her training in Newfoundland and Labrador. She arrived in BC in 1988, taking on the role as medical director of the Prince George Regional Hospital, before settling in Vancouver to open a family practice.

Prior to joining the College in 2011, Dr. McNestry served as a medical advisor and medical manager with WorkSafeBC. As deputy registrar of the College, she is responsible for the BC Methadone Program, the Prescription Review Program, and the monitoring department.

Physician Risk Manager, Safe Medical Care, Canadian Medical Protective Association

Dr. Janet Nuth has been recognized as an accomplished educator by a wide spectrum of learners from medical students, residents, medical faculty, and allied health personnel. She currently serves as the physician risk manager, safe medical care at the Canadian Medical Protective Association and continues to practise part-time in the department of emergency medicine at the Ottawa Hospital where she has worked for more than 20 years.

She has been the faculty development coordinator in the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program at UBC since 2012 where she works with faculty members to further their teaching and assessment abilities.

She earned her medical degree from the University of British Columbia, sand has certification in family medicine from the University of Western Ontario. She has practised in urban and rural communities in BC and Ontario.

Dr. Buckley is currently working toward a master of health professions education.

Sharon SalloumMD, MEd, CCFP, FCFP

Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia

BC physicians who experience difficulties in communication with patients regularly turn to Dr. Sharon Salloum for advice and guidance.

Dr. Salloum attended medical school at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and completed her residency in family practice in Toronto.

From 2000 to 2006, she was the course director for Clinical Skills Year 1 in the UBC MD Undergraduate Program where she worked to develop a communication skills program for year 1 students. She and her colleagues also worked to include communication skills training across the four years of the MDUP curriculum. This opportunity led her to pursue training in various models of physician-patient communication.

Dr. Salloum continues to be involved in the MD Undergraduate Program, most recently teaching in the year 3 and 4 curriculums, and as a member of the Accreditation Steering Committee.
