My 1938 Studebaker Coupe Express by Jerry Kaiser
In the spring of 2010, I bought Bruce Sandburg's incomplete '38 Coupe Express and as the new owner of my dream vintage vehicle, I immediately began to disassemble and personalize the truck. There are two frequent questions that I am often asked. One: What are some of this truck's special qualities and I reply: The 1938 Coupe Express is rare with only 1,000 made, Mileage since completion: 2,144,Color: Jade Mist exterior, Jade Mist & gray interior, Dynomat style (sound deadening) insulation in entire cab, Edmond’s aluminum high compression head, on the rebuilt 246 engine bored 30 over, matching Edmond’s two one-barrel intake manifold, high compression head & air cleaners, carburetors rebuilt, generator replaced with alternator & updated 12 volts system, installed a painless style wiring harness, headlights now have halogen bulbs and stainless steel reflectors mounted inside Cathedral headlights,3 speed overdrive transmission that cruises 65-70mph comfortably in overdrive, Dana 44 rear end with 373 gears, new rear brakes and replaced front brakes with backing plates and brakes from an ‘8E Champ truck (stops great), all new wheel cylinders and master cylinder,15” Crager chrome wheels with BF Goodrich tires, dual exhaust pipes, split exhaust manifold, re-plated all the chrome, installed plush gray upholstery, headliner, (Continued on page 7)

April is such a great month in Arizona. Our Breakfast in the
Park outing was held at Aqua Caliente Park. If you haven't
been there, you missed seeing one of the best parks in
Tucson. Many members drove their Studies to eat a great
breakfast. Thanks to Randy Goble for his usual skill making
pancakes and frying bacon; and to Chuck Stanford for
cooking up a great bunch of scrambled eggs. The Wheelers
actually drove their 63 Wagon!!!!!!!! Our next outing will be the
Asarco mine tour on May 16th. Hope to see you there.

We were fortunate enough to have TWO write ups for the Breakfast event. I want everyone to have a
say if the mood strikes so here are both of them!!!!!
Early risers seen at the "Breakfast in the Park" on Saturday April 18 were Lance Angerhofer, Steve &
Gail Ault, Deb Crooks, Lew Dandurand, Randy Goble, Fred & Nora Gooch, Jerry & June Kaiser, John L.
Lewis, Terry Lewis, Bob & Eileen Loshbough, Bob & Jenny Miles, Mary Powell-McConnell, Bruce
Sandburg & Delores Shurtz, Chuck & Louise Stanford, Bruce & Maggie Wheeler, along with enough food
for the rest of the club. Also Jenny Miles pulled the 50/50 ticket for who else but her hubby Bob Miles. It
has happened before, Jenny, just enjoy your good luck and make Bob give you your half of the $27.00
he won. Agua Caliente Park is still one of Tucson's nicest parks. If you count them there were 26
attending this event which means 31 of you missed out on a GREAT TIME. Come on folks get out and
enjoy your club and Drive those Studebakers. Chuck & Louise Stanford
Arizona – Grand day, grand park, grand breakfast…
An early arrival on the cool morning – Randy Goble setting up for pancakes and bacon, followed
by Chuck (and Louise) Stanford who manned the egg scrambling station. Of course, food is a
calling all Studebaker enthusiasts so before long the park was a buzz with Studebaker talk:
Chuck Naugle is out of the hospital, Mary McConnell was present, Nora is dancing at
retirement centers, Bob Miles came sans cane- life is good.
Many thanks to the stalwart crew who hauled (and hauled) bbq, coffee, orange juice, plates,
silverware, tablecloths, salt and pepper, butter, etc. And to all the contributors to the buffet of
breads, sweet rolls,, coffeecakes, donuts, etc. that rounded out the breakfast. One big problem
emerged – we needed to stay for another day to eat up all the leftovers!!
Attendees included: Steve and Gail Ault, Deb Crooks, Lew Dandurand, Randy Goble, Fred and
Nora Gooch, Jerry and June Kaiser, John Lewis, Terry Lewis, Bob and Eileen Loshbough, Mary
McConnell and Lance Angerhofer, Bob and Jenny Miles, Bruce Sandburg and Delores Shurtz,
Chuck and Louise Stanford, Bruce and Maggie Wheeler. Cars in attendance included a ’37
Dictator, ’61 Champ Pickup, ’50 Champion Starlight Coupe, ‘59 white Transtar pickup, ’63
Wagonaire, ’64 GT Hawk, ‘47/50 Convertible, ’54 Starliner, ’61 Lark Wagon. Can you match the
car with its driver?
Louis Drachman Agua Caliente Park is on of the prettiest parks in Pima County – and, plenty
since then. But April 18th it was green and lush and, sitting in the sun, an absolutely perfect
morning for this get together. Steve ‘n Gail Ault

FROM TUCSON, ARIZONA TO SOUTH BEND, INDIANA ON A LARK (PICKUP, THAT IS)
By Chuck Naugle
Having need for a pickup for the last twenty-five years, and to tow a ‘60 Lark convertible back to a prospective member
in Mishawaka, Indiana, I bought a ‘62 Champ pickup from a fellow SDC member on July 2, 1974. This gave me ten days
to make minor repairs on things that had gone wrong over a period of years, plus installing an air conditioner, dual gas
tanks, radio, etc. Planning on leaving for the National SDC Meet on July 12, I still didn’t have all the work completed, so
I extended my working hours into the early hours of the morning. Getting a few hours sleep, I then started out for South
Bend, Saturday, July 13 in the a.m. Things went good for the first three hundred miles. Then, with a few coughs and
sputters, she quits in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Checking a few things out, finally discovered it’s the fuel pump. No
problem, I (can) get one from the parts box (that I always carry), but with all the hustle and bustle I forgot to put one in
the parts box. So what to do now take one off the ‘60 convertible that I’m towing. This one worked, so we’re off again.
Runs beautifully through the rest of New Mexico, Texas and half way through Oklahoma. Then climbing one of the red
hills, a lot of smoke starts coming from under the hood. The engine stops as I pull off of the road. I got the fire
extinguisher out, as it seems to be a fire. Raised the hood and start spraying as I just filled both tanks and one was
leaking a little. I could just vision the whole thing blowing up. After things cooled off, I discovered it was only a freeze
plug. No problem, there must be a freeze plug in the parts box and there was. But guess which plug blew out - the one
behind the exhaust crossover pipe. No problem, either, since I have my tool box and tools, that is all except a 9/16”
socket that must be home on the garage floor. So I send the wife down the road approximately one half mile to a service
station to beg, borrow or steal a 9/16” socket (sent a 1/2” socket for a sample, needing only a 1/16” larger.) The service
station had one but they kept my 1/2” for security, which I needed to use for removing the exhaust clamps but got by. I
got the exhaust pipes off, freeze plug in and made a trip back to the service station for water. Now to see if it would start
or had the engine, my wife or me cooked (with the temperature being 101º in the late afternoon)! Well, it started right up
and ran beautifully. I put the exhaust pipes back on and tightened all the nuts except for the one which couldn’t be put
back on because I had twisted one of the studs. Thought I’d better add a can of Granatelli goop (STP) to make things
go little farther, and you guessed it...the snap on top of the can pulled off. (Andy’s entitled to one mistake!) Back on the
road, trouble free, through the rest of Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois. Arrived in Terra Haute, Indiana, and stayed
overnight with my sister and her family. What was to greet me besides the sun the next morning but a flat tire. After
checking wrecking yards, I was again on the road on Tuesday to the home of my 1962 Champ pickup with overdrive.
Destination made Wednesday a.m., July 17th.
Chuck’s recounting of his adventure first appeared in the Third Quarter,1974 ECHO. GCSC members were pleased to
see Chuck at our Studebaker gathering at South Mountain Park, on March 14th. Later in the day, while visiting family in
Scottsdale he had a fall and broke his hip. Chuck had surgery and is now recuperating at a rehab facility in Tucson. If
you would like to send Chuck your best wishes, please send your greetings to this address: 7714 W. Summer Scene,
Tucson, AZ 85743. He would enjoy hearing from you.

(continued from Page 1) carpeting, all new glass, left & right swan arm mirrors, working gauges, rebuilt speedometer turned back to zero in 2011, new running board mats, new door & window rubber, and spray-in bed liner. The second most frequent question asked is, "Has the cab been chopped”? No, the cab is original. This ‘38 Studebaker Coupe Express, now complete, is a very unique pickup. It's a good solid truck and a pleasure to drive, however even though I will miss it, as it leaves for Seattle, Washington, I feel that it's time to move onto another vehicle, with or without a chopped top.

Odds and ends by pete yuen
Tech Tip by Jerry Blount , Member, Northwest Chapter. Taken from VISTA newsletter of Vancouver Island Chapter
The harnessing and routing of spark plug cables on a Studebaker V-8 is important, so that they may perform reliably, safely, and look good at the same time! The 1951 through 1954 232 cu. In. V-8’s and the 1955 224/259 cu. In. V-8s used large steel brackets to guide the set of four ca-bles neatly over the valve covers on each side. Various part numbers of brackets were used over the above years, but the brackets left little doubt as to their purpose. Starting in 1956 (and through 1964) a less elaborate method was used to route the spark plug cables. A pair of brackets, #1539892, were mounted using the rearmost bolt on the intake manifold—one on each side. These were used as intermediate brackets to capture the four cables leading to each side. From there, the wires were routed to 533007 clips, which held two cables each and were mounted using the valve cover stud and nut. The “four stud” valve covers used through very early 1960 used a total of four 533007 clips—two per side. Most of 1960 production through 1964 used “two stud” valve covers which each had a spot-welded cable clip attached midway between the stud holes, and thus only used one 533007 clip per side, at the rear valve cover stud. The point of this column is that I have seen many cars that have had their 1539892 brackets missing. Apparently if a car was being worked on, the mechanic just neglected to re-install them. It is important to have these in place beyond eliminating an unsightly tangle of spark plug cables—there is a very real possibility of the cables getting caught in the throttle linkage and holding the throttle open. So, if your 1956—1964 V-8 does not have these brackets at the rear of the intake manifold—get some soon. They were still available new and can also be found used. A related topic is the correct routing of the cables on the left (driver’s) side. A Studebaker v-8 fires 1-8-4- 3-6-5-7-2, as do most v-8s when 1-3-5-7 is the driver’s side and 2-4-6-8 is the passenger side. The problem is that two adjacent cylinders (5 and 7) fire consecutively on the same side of the engine. To avoid induced cross firing, these two cables MUST NOT RUN NEXT TO EACH OTHER! This means, run 1 and 5 through the forward routing, and 3 and 7 through the rearmost routing, then cross the 3 and 5 cables so they reach their respective spark plugs. To make the path more direct for the #3 cable, position the 533007 clip so that the cables are routed forward relative to the rear valve cover stud. On the passenger side, the best routing for cables 6 and 8 is with the rearmost 533007 clip positioned to the rear-pointing at the firewall. The exceptions to all of this discussion are 1963 and 1964 Avantis. They used an elaborate set of brackets with stainless steel covers to shield the ignition system for radio interference, necessitated by the Avanti FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) body. The left side cables all run together in a rubber channel within the stainless steel shield, but again, the arrangement needs to be 1-5-3-7 so that 5 and 7 are separated.
