Major John Cole was president of Newbury Operatic Society from 1976. A former High Sheriff and Justice Of The Peace at West Berkshire Magistrates Court, John held many distinguished position within the local community.

He approached amateur dramatics with great enthusiasm and became a very keen stalwart of the society. His good spirits, sparkling humour and common sense approach enlivened many a committee meeting. On Front Of House duties John was famed for cajoling the audience into several raffle ticket strips and then a gentle persuasive nudge towards the bar for refreshments! He made people feel welcome with a warm smile, acting always as himself, a true gentleman if ever

there was one.

He will be remembered by us all so fondly as someone who gave so much but expected so little. He gave time to listen, to support and to advise in a gentle and encouraging manner. He was very familiar with many across our membership and was actively involved right up until the end of last year. His passion for traditional musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan did not get in the way of his interest and support for the modern productions. At 91 he was a forward thinking president! Our production of Anything Goes is dedicated in Johns memory. We wish his family and friends an enjoyable evening. We have been privileged to have known such a kind and true gentleman. Thank you for all that you gave to Newbury

Operatic Society John, this week is for you.

On behalf of Newbury Operatic Society,

Jeremy Mann and Kate Mayo.

Chairman’s Message Welcome to the Corn Exchange and to Newbury Operatic Society’s production of Anything Goes. I am delighted to introduce myself to you all in my first year as Chairman and I look forward to meeting with as

many of you as possible over the coming years.

When we looked at Anything Goes we knew we had a challenge on our hands. To combine traditions of the well know musical numbers with additional energy to the storyline. After all, recent professional productions of this show demonstrate incredible levels of acting and choreography that have freshened up the show! Our cast has been inspired by our talented director

Jeanette Maskell, closely watching and tweaking scene by scene to get the desired effect. Nikki Rogers returns again as our Choreographer and her efforts too our reflected in slick

running chorus numbers that have youth, energy and most importantly, fun!!

The unsung role of Producer has been extremely well asserted by Sarah Scott Cound. A vital role and one that does not get the recognition it deserves. For Sarah’s “get it done” attitude we thank her tremendously. Then there is the stage crew, the front of house, the lighting….. too many others to mention! Suffice to say they all play as big a part as anyone on stage and the feeling of a team effort resounds around the theatre in this special week for Newbury Operatic Society. We hope you too have a special evening and thank you, our

audience, for all your support.

Very best wishes Jeremy Mann

Synopsis Billy Crocker, a young love-sick Wall Street broker, stows away on the S.S. American, in hopes of winning the

heart of his beloved Hope Harcourt. His boss, Yale graduate Elisha J. Whitney, is also on board. He plans to relax before making an important business deal in England. Hope is on her way to England to be married to Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, a stuffy, hapless British nobleman. Also on the boat are "Moonface" Martin, a second-rate gangster on the lam labeled "Public Enemy 13," and his friend Bonnie. The two have disguised themselves as a minister and a missionary, respectively, after stranding the ship's real chaplain back at the port. They also,

mistakenly, left behind their leader, "Snake Eyes" Johnson, Public Enemy 1.

On board, Crocker runs into his friend, Reno Sweeney, an evangelizing nightclub singer, who resolves to help Billy win over Hope, to the dismay of Hope's mother, Mrs. Harcourt (though she doesn't know about the original plan), who insists she marry Evelyn. Billy simultaneously learns the true identities of Moonface and Bonnie, and in exchange for his silence, they join the plot to break up Hope and Evelyn. However, as Billy doesn't have a ticket or passport, Bonnie and Moonface let him have Snake Eyes Johnson's, without telling him to whom it belongs. But the ships crew figure out that Public Enemy number 1 is on board, and Billy has to take on a number of hilarious disguises to hide from them, which at first makes Hope angry with him. As the show progresses, Hope, Evelyn, Billy, Reno, Elisha, Mrs. Harcourt, Bonnie, and Moonface all end up in a variety of compromising positions with members of the opposite sex, with Reno seducing Evelyn Oakleigh, originally just to get seen by Hope or Mrs. Harcourt so they would reject him, but eventually she wins him over for real and they even get married. Hope and Billy also get married, Mrs. Harcourt (divorced) and Mr. Whitney get married, and Moonface Martin receives a notice on board that the government considers him "harmless”.

The Show The original idea for Anything Goes came from 1930’s Broadway producer Vinton Freedley, who was living on a boat, having left the US to avoid his creditors. He selected the writing team, and the star of the first production, Ethel

Merman. The original story was written by Guy Bolton, and P.G. Wodehouse, but had to be heavily revised a few weeks before opening, apparently to avoid similarities with a recent shipping disaster. The re-writing brought together Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse for the first time, a collaboration which would last until the 1960’s and included the

original book for our next Corn Exchange production, The Sound Of Music.

After a succession of hit musicals, Cole Porter was at the height of his powers and popularity for Anything Goes, but in typical fashion, having written the songs, left the orchestration and production to others. Porter was able to enjoy the opening night of his musicals; he would make a grand entrance and sit in front, apparently

relishing the show as much as any audience member.

The original show opened in November 1934 and ran for 420 performances. In the following year, it was also produced in the West End although P.G. Wodehouse had to be brought back to make the show more

understandable for British audiences.

A movie version of Anything Goes was made in 1936, again starring Ethel Merman, and featuring a young Bing Crosby as Billy Crocker. 16 years later, Merman also starred in a

live US TV version, which included Frank Sinatra as Harry Dane (a re-named Billy Crocker). Crosby returned for a second film version, made in 1956, but both the plot and the music were heavily modified, and the end result bears little

similarity to the original show.

The theatre show has been revived several times since the 1930s. For the off-Broadway production in 1962, di-rected by Lawrence Kasha, the script was revised to in-corporate several of the changes from the movie ver-sions. Most changes revolved around the previously mi-nor character Bonnie. This revision was also the first stage version of Anything Goes to incorporate several songs from other Porter shows: "Take Me Back to Man-hattan" from The New Yorkers (1930), "It's De-Lovely" from Red Hot and Blue (1934), "Friendship" from DuBarry Was a Lady (1939), and "Let's Misbehave" from Paris,

(1928).

Further revisions have been made since, and the show continues to be popular today. The current Broadway

production features Stephanie J. Block as Reno, and the legendary Joel Gray as Moon-

face Martin. In 2011, it won 3 Tony Awards, including best Best Musical Revival.

Despite it’s long history, and popularity on the amateur circuit, this is only the second time that the show has been performed by Newbury Operatic. Our 1997 production included

several members of the cast & crew of tonights show.

Jeanette Maskell - Director Jeanette is no stranger to theatre. She has performed on stage, as a lead character and chorus. Off-stage, as choreographer, director or back stage crew. She was, therefore, thrilled last year to have won the NODA Flame ward for “inspirational contribution to the pursuit of excellence in theatre”. After a two year break she has returned in a directorial capacity. With such a talented cast, she has found it a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. She would like to thank, Sarah Scott-Cound, Producer and Nikki Rogers, Choreographer, both of whom have been dedicated and enthusiastic in their respective

roles. Jeanette says she could not have done it with out their commitment and hard work.

Michael Evans LRAM, ARCM, ATCL, GRSM

- Musical Director. Michael studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Sir John Barbiriolli and Michael Head. He was head of music at the Bulmershe School, Reading and the Hephaistos school for severely handicapped children before becoming Music Advisor for Oxfordshire. He has appeared on Radio and Television at The Royal Albert Hall and The Royal Festival Hall with the Oxfordshire Youth Orchestra. Michael has also played the organ at the cathedral in Jerusalem. Michael first

joined NOS in 1960 as a member of the orchestra.

Nicola Rogers – Choreographer This is Nikki’s second year in the role of choreographer after last years’ production of Beauty and the Beast. After enjoying working on this show so much, Nikki jumped at the chance of yet another challenge. It has been a long journey but one Nikki feels has been worthwhile and rewarding. The cast have been a pleasure to work with, and whilst being hard work, she feels it is always so satisfying to see

her ideas successfully coming together.

Nikki would like to thank Jeanette for giving her this opportunity, and her husband Martin (Sir Evelyn) for taking

the criticisms on the chin and not ‘too’ personally!

Sarah Scott-Cound - Producer Sarah has produced several productions for NOS including Anything Goes in 1997. She is currently Chairman of our youth section, Newbury YoungStars and also recently directed their production of ‘Alice In Wonderland Jr.’. Sarah would like to thank everyone working behind the scenes for all their hard work and time they have given towards this production. Once this show is over she is keen to get her teeth into production for our next show ‘The

Revenge of Sherlock Holmes’ which will be a Newbury premiere.

Jamie Ledwith - Billy Crocker

Jamie is delighted to be joining NOS for his first full production after being away from the stage for several years. His previous roles include The Lion in The Wiz and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. As a singer, Jamie has performed internationally and regularly plays in many local pubs, and fronts several bands across the South of England. The highlight of Jamie’s writing career came when his musical, Speed Dating, was performed at The Jermyn Street Theatre

in London’s West End.

Claire Bowden - Hope Harcourt

Claire trained in musical theatre at London Studio Centre and graduated

with a degree in Theatre Dance. Her professional experience includes Guys and Dolls (Royal Festival Hall), and touring in The Wiz. She is now a teacher of dance at WBBS and Downe House. A newcomer to NOS, she regularly treads the boards with Nomads and KATS too, and has enjoyed playing some fantastic roles including Sarah in Our House, Anita in West Side Story, Laurey in Oklahoma!, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and Eliza in My Fair Lady. Claire also loves

singing for local party band Misbehavin’.

Debbi Ledwith - Reno Sweeney

Debbi trained at The Welsh College of Music and Drama and The Royal

Academy of Music and is currently Head of Performing Arts at The Vyne Community School. She has always loved musical theatre and previous roles include Julie Jordan in Carousel, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Yum Yum in The Mikado. Debbi spends a lot of time directing student productions, so is very happy to be returning to the stage. This is her first show with

NOS and she is delighted to be playing Reno alongside such a talented cast.

Martin Rogers - Sir Evelyn Oakleigh This is Martin’s second principal role with Newbury Operatic Society. After playing the Beast in the last production he really wanted to try and lighten the mood and play a

comedy role. Martin has really enjoyed getting to know the character and his eccentric side. He says it's been an absolute pleasure working with the entire cast of such talented performers. Enjoy the

show!

Sarah Scott-Cound—Mrs Harcourt

Sarah has been a member of NOS for 23 years and has taken on a wide variety of roles both on stage and off. Her on stage roles include; Katherine/Lilli in Kiss Me

Kate, The Sorceress of The North in The Wizard of Oz, Cousin Hebe in HMS Pinafore,, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, The Plaintiff in Trial By Jury, Zorah in Ruddigore, Grace

Farrell in Annie, The Witch in Into The Woods and Ado Annie in Oklahoma.

Jeremy Mann - Moonface Martin Another role which escapes dancing…brilliant!! Moonie has been such a fun character to learn and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a talented cast. I haven’t “graced” the stage since playing Tevye, two years ago in N.O.S production of Fiddler on the Roof. Time certainly does fly and what with directing our last show I am really excited to be back on the stage having fun in such a rewarding hobby as amateur theatre. I hope you enjoy the show as much as Moon. Oh, special thanks to the Men’s Dance Captain, Tony Randall, for all his expert advice with

“Moonies moves”!!

Sasha Robaczynski - Bonnie This is Sasha's 6th show with NOS and she is delighted to not only be working with a wonderful team again, but to be playing the fun and flirtatious Bonnie. As well as having the opportunity to perform a variety of wonderful roles in many musical productions such as Calamity Jane, West Side Story, Jekyll & Hyde and Our House, she has also been studying dance for 13 years, most recently at the University of Winchester, obtaining a degree in Dance & Choreography which she has started to put to good use, choreographing local productions. Anything

Goes allows her to put on her dancing shoes again and do something she truly loves.

Page 19: The Corn Exchange, Newbury - Amazon Web Serviceswebjam-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/anthing_goes_programme__4109_… · The Corn Exchange, Newbury ... For the off-Broadway production in

Holly Lucas - Virtue Angel Holly is currently studying drama and creative writing at the University of Winchester, fitting it around a packed acting schedule in and around her home in Berkshire. She has been involved in an endless amount of theatre productions, most recently playing Olga the Dominatrix in Showtime Chemistry with Newbury Nomads, and on the 15th April (yes, that’s this Sunday) she’s playing Elizabeth and Walton in Frankenstein at Compton Coronation Hall. Even though it may be hard to tell the Angels apart, you can’t miss her –

she’s the one with all the faces!

Alison Hoult - Charity Angel Alison trained in dance at the London College of Dance and was Head of Performing A r t s a t S t Marylebone School in London for several years before leaving to have her

children. She has been involved in local theatre groups since school and first performed for NOS in the 1991 production of Annie Get your Gun. Her dance background has been invaluable when rehearsing for the role of Charity in Anything Goes although the tap numbers have put her fitness to the test. Alison now teaches dance in schools around

Berkshire and South Oxfordshire.

Daisy Lawrenson - Purity Angel Daisy is studying Beauty Therapy at Newbury College but has always had a passion for performing. She has appeared in various shows such as The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, Fame and Guys and Dolls. This is Daisy’s 2nd show with NOS, after playing a Silly Girl in Beauty and the Beast last year. She is looking forward to playing a (slightly) classier

Angel!!

Jacqui Trumper - Chastity Angel Jacqui is delighted to be playing an Angel in Anything Goes which was her first show with Newbury Operatic Society after finishing her training at Bird College. It has been a challenge fitting in all the rehearsals around her work and teaching with the Shaline School of Dancing, but she thanks her long suffering family for their continued support and hopes

they enjoy it as much as she has.

Jon Lovell - Elisha J Whitney Anything Goes is Jon’s ninth Musical at Newbury Corn Exchange, having played some great roles, including Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, Curly in Oklahoma and Lumierre in Beauty and the Beast. In September 2011 Jon was presented “The Ken Wirdnam Memorial Trophy” from NODA for his portrayal of Jekyll & Hyde in Jekyll and Hyde the Musical with Newbury Nomads. By day, Jon is a voiceover for TV & Radio and records his

daily life on Youtube!
