A family ranch with a winning track record will once again compete at the Canadian Bull Congress in Camrose on January 24 and 25.

Dawn Wilson from Miller Wilson Angus said it takes dedication, pas-sion and compromise to run a successful cattle farm.

“It needs to be your passion,” said Wilson. “We’ve always loved ani-mals. You get to work with them and learn their habits.”

Miller Wilson Angus has been honoured with the title of pen of three bulls grand champion as well as pen of three heif-ers grand champion sev-eral times over the years, and has also won the indi-vidual categories. They have participated in the event for about 20 years. Wilson said the challenge is bringing a uniform pen while also bringing the best of their cattle. Three

judges will look at the cattle for structure cor-rectness, uniformity and depth.

“Every breed has great strengths and this country can use all of the breeds,” Wilson said, noting that

they choose to raise Angus cattle because they are diverse and hardy.

“They can survive and thrive in any climate.”

Wilson and her hus-band Lee have raised Angus cattle on their farm outside of Bashaw for over 40 years, with children Ty, Dakota and Jaelayne, who are also very involved in ranch life. They have a herd of 140 mature cows currently.

“We focus on cattle that will live a long time and do well for our cus-tomers,” Wilson said. “For me, it’s absolutely the best way to raise your kids. You get to have them at work with you all the time and how many jobs afford you that luxury? You’re feed-ing your kids, but you’re also feeding the world.”

She noted that working with cattle gives children good morals and values, and makes them respon-sible at a young age.

Miller Wilson Angus competed at the Farm-fair in Edmonton last fall, taking home a Ram truck for the supreme champion female prize. They compete at events all across Canada and travel to Denver, Colorado each year. They have also judged cattle at events in Australia, Japan, Mexico, Colombia, and the United States.

Wilson said they will bring both bulls and heif-ers to this year’s Canadian Bull Congress and that it’s a tremendous event, as well as the first of its kind in this area.

“It was unique in that you could bring cattle and display them to poten-tial customers and other breeders, but you don’t

have to participate in the show,” Wilson said. “It was innovative at the time and has proven to be very suc-cessful, running as long as it has run. It has been a great showcase for us. I think that’s a common thread for most people who come there.”

She noted that they have sold bulls at the congress, and have been approached afterwards by people looking to buy embryos, semen and all ages of live cattle. They have been doing embryo work for 30 years, which involves super-ovulating the best cows, bringing them into heat, breeding them and incubating the embryos. The embryos are then removed and can be frozen and sold or implant-ed into recipients in the spring. They have sold embryos into 27 countries, which they were able to do even during the BSE crisis when the sale of live cattle was banned.

Wilson said that while the industry is doing better now than in the BSE years, it is still sub-ject to conditions such as drought.

“We see it constantly that someone on a farm has to take another off-farm job as well as their full-time plus job on the farm, which is really sad,” Wilson said. “We’re real-ly fortunate to be in this industry, even as chal-lenging as it can be some-times.”

The congress, celebrating its 28th year in 2014, typically has 12 breeds represented, with over 250 livestock exhibitors and attendance of more than 7,500 people.

The City of

Camrose

By Dan JensenA 2012 bay gelding

bred and raised by John and Gail Muirhead, of Bawlf, has taken his spot among the world’s best.

It’s Game Day was crowned world champion yearling gelding in both the open and amateur competitions at the World Quarter Horse show in Oklahoma City in Novem-ber.

“He was everything we expected him to be and more,” said John, who, along with Gail, was in attendance at the show. “Ross (Roark), the current trainer, had him fit to a tee and he was gorgeous. It was quite a week to see him named world champion in both the amateur and open competitions.

It’s Game Day (barn name Jake) qualified for the World Quarter Horse Show on the basis of a strong 2013 show sea-son which saw him win the title of grand cham-pion eight times and reserve grand champion four times. At the 2013 American Quarter Horse Association congress in Columbus, Ohio, he was named congress cham-pion in both the amateur and open classes.

It’s Game Day’s suc-cess in 2013 was a perfect follow up to a 2012 season in which he won the title of world champion wean-ling stallion in the open competition and reserve world champion weanling stallion in the amateur.

“We have learned from talking to different train-ers that very few horses who win the world compe-tition as weanling stallion repeat as a yearling,” said John.

In his distinguished career, It’s Game Day has now won four American Quarter Horse Associa-tion championships and three world champion-ships.

“From the time Gail and I helped deliver him we thought he might be a great one,” said John.

It’s Game Day is owned by Frank Berris, of Sparta, Michigan.

Irrigated 2014 crop seminarFrom Agri-News

The Irrigated Crop Pro-duction Update is being held in Lethbridge at the Leth-bridge Lodge and Confer-ence Centre on January 21 and 22, 2014.

“The conference will be of interest to irrigated crop producers, crop advisors, irrigation equipment deal-ers, and others connected to the irrigation industry,” says Shelley Woods, soil and water research scientist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “The agenda includes presenta-tions on agronomic manage-ment, pest management, irrigated crops, irrigation equipment, water manage-ment and financial manage-ment.”

Speakers include experts from private indus-try, Alberta Agriculture and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. There will also be displays by Alberta Agricul-ture and Rural Development and conference sponsors.

Early conference regis-tration is $85 per person (including GST) and includes two lunches, snacks, a social mixer, and the opportunity to see all of the speaker pre-sentations.

“The last time the con-ference was held, there were more than 350 registrants, so it is likely that this con-ference will also sell-out,” says Woods. “Early registra-tion is advised.”

Cargill has begun to expand storage and rail at its Viking grain handling facility.

The expansion will be welcome news for local pro-ducers as it will improve ter-minal capacity available in the surrounding area. Stor-age capacity will increase by approximately 10,000 metric tons and car rail handling from 52 cars to 100.

“We recognize the need for more storage and addi-tional car spots,” said Jeff Vassart, president, Cargill Limited. “We have an oppor-tunity to manage how our grain will move and improve rail shipment efficiency.”

Cargill’s Viking location presently ships the major-ity of its grain to Cargill’s North Vancouver and Prince Rupert export terminals via rail. Doubling its rail car capacity creates more effi-ciency throughout the indus-try.

“With the record 70 mil-lion MT crop Canada saw this year, the entire industry needs to optimize our abil-ity to perform. Collaboration throughout the industry is what will drive change and improvement,” added Vas-sart.

The expansion also will mean more jobs. Cargill will hire four more full-time posi-tions, ranging from sales to operations.

“We are proud to see constant growth in Cana-dian agriculture,” said Ryan DeChief, general manager for Cargill AgHorizons in Viking. “Our Viking location and team of employees have a reputation of providing our growers with excellent cus-tomer service and effective handling. This expansion will even further enhance our ability to best serve our local customers.”

New ag factsheetsFrom Agri-News

Two new factsheets have been added to Alberta Agricul-ture and Rural Development’s webpage.

Fertilizing Eroded Knolls – many fields in Alberta are dotted with relatively unproductive knolls. Water and wind erosion, in many cases, strip away organic-matter-rich topsoil from these exposed knolls. The erosion reduces water infil-tration and water-holding capacity, and results in soil density restricting root growth leaving these knolls even more sus-ceptible to drought. This factsheet discusses the character-istics and limitations of knolls and provides information on how to restore productivity.

Fall-applied Nitrogen: Risks and Benefits – the relative effectiveness of fall versus spring applications of nitrogen fertilizer is a subject that many producers have questioned. This factsheet considers many factors that have a bearing on the decision, from soil moisture and temperature, the form of nitrogen used, to how the fertilizer will be applied. The fact-sheet also provides several management recommendations that producers can consider when making a decision based on their individual needs and circumstances.

From Agri-NewsThe Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) has welcomed Cal

Vance as Farm Implement Inspector.“I was born and raised on a mixed farm near Madden,

Alberta, and attended high school in Airdrie and then SAIT for four years obtaining my mechanics license with a red seal,” said Vance. “I owned and operated a small repair shop for many years working on everything from lawn mowers to four wheel drive tractors and most everything in between.”

From there Vance then entered into the oil and gas industry, starting as a mechanic and then moving up the line holding various management and director positions with several service companies specializing in failure analysis, technical support and administering warranty and product performance issues.

Anyone requiring information or assistance regarding farm implements, parts availability, farm implement dealer/distributor licensing, warranty issues, failure to perform inquiries or the obsolete parts directory, are asked to contact Vance toll-free in Alberta at 310-FARM (3276) or go to the Farmers’ Advocate Office website.

Nutritionworkbook releasedFrom Agri-News

Consumers are proac-tively seeking foods and beverages that will help maintain or improve their health and well-being. In fact, reports show that 68 per cent of Canadians use easily accessible food labels as a source of food and nutrition information to help them make informed purchases. Yet many con-sumers report having dif-ficulty understanding food labels as they look to make healthy choices.

“The Marketing Nutrition workbook helps food processors align credible healthy eating messages with regulated claims for food products in a consumer-friendly format,” said workbook author Brenda Arychuk, R.D.

The COUNTRY BOOSTER, January 14, 2014 – Page 10

By Murray GreenThe Canadian Bull Con-

gress is still the best place for beef producers to market cattle.

School education pro-grams, 4-H activities and cat-tle from exhibitors from all over the world are featured.

"The Canadian Bull Congress is a fantastic event in an outstanding venue, in a super cattle country location. This congress, in addition to attracting the local cattle people, attracts attention on the national and internation-al scale," said John Chomiak of Chomiak Charolais. "This exposure is vital to our busi-ness. We are always anxious to be involved, as this event

has expanded our marketing network. This has been and we believe, in the continuing years, will continue to have a positive influence in market-ing our quality bulls which we raise. We do everything possible to ensure that we do not miss such an outstanding event."

The event is even popular with cattle producers in Ireland.

"This was the time of our lives. A show so well organized it seemed effort-less. The involvement of the school children in such num-bers, children hand-paint-ing a heifer and milking a cow, top quality cattle, great food and entertainment," said Gerry Smyth on behalf

of the 2008 delegation from Ireland. "You certainly have done a fantastic job in build-ing international relations for your show. Great cattle, great tours, great fun – but most of all, the greatest peo-ple we have ever met."

ATB Financial has been involved with the Canadian Bull Congress in excess of 10 years.

"We are proud to be associated with this event for a number of reasons. It is an excellent run show with fantastic participation from producers and public," said Dan Wizniuk of ATB Finan-cial. "Agriculture is the back-bone of this province and it is a pleasure to show our

support to this sector of the economy. It brings together rural and urban for three days a year. This show is a must for anyone involved with the agricultural sector."

The event is the second to none.

"The Canadian Bull Con-gress is one of the premier cattle events in Canada. We feel it is a must attend show. The addition of international guests opens up a whole new mar-keting opportunity," said Dawn and Lee Wilson of Miller Wil-son Angus.

"We enjoyed a positive experience as first time exhibitors at the Canadian Bull Congress. We have over

the years participated in all major North American cattle events including Houston, Denver, Regina, Calgary and Edmonton and numer-ous smaller venues. For a participant, your hospitality is right at the top," said Stan Cichon of Well’s Crossing Cattle Company.

"The Canadian Bull Congress allows us to show-case our products and ser-vices to some of the most pro-gressive cattle producers in the world. It does this in a very cost effective manner, providing us a great return on our investment," said Paul Nigh of Pfizer Animal Health.

Bawlf high school boys win 1A volley provincials

By Murray GreenThe high school Bawlf

Wildcats volleyball team scratched out another 1A boys provincial title in Edmonton.

"I am very proud of all the guys. This team surpassed all my expec-tations and I feel fortu-nate to have coached play-ers that worked hard all season," said coach Brad Munro. "We participated in six very competitive tournaments throughout the season trying to pre-pare for zones and provin-cials."

Bawlf defeated the Bow Island Senator Ger-shaw Gators 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12 in the final to garner the crown for the second straight season.

The Wildcats elimi-nated the Coronation Saints 25-15 and 25-18 in the semifinals to have a shot at defending the championship. Bawlf also beat the Rosemary Rockets 25-15, 21-25 and 15-13 in the quar-ter-finals.

"I hope you will never forget the provin-cial road to gold. Our players stayed focused, positive and believed in themselves and in their teammates," the coach said. "They are all truly champions, not just because they won, but because of how they won."

In round robin action Bawlf beat teams from Fairview, Duchess and

Calgary but lost one match 25-22, 21-25, 12-15 to the Gershaw Gators. The Wildcats reached provincials by winning the eight team Central Zone Champi-onship in Bawlf. They defeated Eckville in the semifinals and Corona-tion in the zone final.

"Our goal at the beginning of the season was to place first or sec-ond at zones to qualify for provincials," added coach Munro. "Well, all I can say is that everything seemed to come togeth-er at zones as we played some of our best volleyball of the season in front of all our fans."
