This little comic comes to us from the Church Pension Group calendar.

Helps us to know it’s not just a Christ Church matter. It’s world- wide!

(if you are in fact reading this)

A funny thing happened on the beach of Cape May……

Dear Friends,

Picture it: A beautifully sunny week at GFS (Girls Friendly Society) Camp studying all the aspects of

STEWARDSHIP: Becoming Care Bears. We arrive at the local beach around 9:30 on a Thursday morning for

an unconventional worship session. When I assure the Beach Attendant that we will be done before 10:00a.m.

(the time when the beach is officially open for business, and one must show proof of the proper beach tag), she

looks at me rather skeptically, but allows us through.

I was finishing up a guided beach meditation based on John 6.1-13, the account of Jesus feeding the multitude

of 5,000 with only five barley loaves and two fishes, courtesy of a small boy, when just on the periphery of my

range of vision, I notice the Attendant lurking nearby – a little too close for comfort. It was getting close to 10,

so I hurried the girls up off their towels, knowing that she would be asking to see our tags (which we did not

have) or asking us to leave.

But I was wrong! It seems that “Elaine” (the Beach Attendant who then introduced herself to me) had overheard

the scripture reading and had come closer to listen in. She told me that she had been to the very place on the Sea

of Galilee where it is said that this event in our Lord’s life took place, and she was captivated by the meditation.

When I shared with her that I had recently been to Israel myself, a lengthy conversation ensued; it seems that

Israel is one of those experiences that transcends time and place and instantly connects people in ways one

would never expect – especially on a Cape May beach!

I also shared with my new friend Elaine the news I will now share with my Christ Church family: another trip to

Israel is in the works! This time, the Reverend Ophelia Laughlin (of St. Georges by the River, Rumson) and I

will be leading a trip with folks from our two congregations. We are in the very beginning of our plans, but the

tentative dates are March 1-10, 2017. Many of you know that Ophelia and I roomed together on the trip I took

there earlier this year; we had such a marvelous time of it that when she asked if I would like to lead a trip with

her I immediately agreed. I am so very excited about this opportunity to return – and I think doing so with

another congregation will be a phenomenal experience.

So start thinking about it now. Circle your calendar and start saving your dollars. If you have never been, this

will be a perfect trip for you. And if you have been before, I know you will be excited to give it another go. I

know I am! More information and details will be coming very soon.

And did I forget to mention it? My new best Cape May friend, Beach Attendant Elaine, simply smiled at our

girls and waved us all through the next time we entered the beach, with nary a question about our beach tags.

Like the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, Gods blessings seem to multiply all the time.

Peace,

Mother Lisa+

A Shrewsbury Thank You…….

Dear Christ Church,

On behalf of the Foundation for Shrewsbury

Education, I would like to thank you for your

donation* to our annual Wine Tasting Event and for

helping to make it such an outstanding success! We

are happy to announce that we raised more than

$13,000 and welcomed 135 guests. It was a

fantastic evening!

The funds raised at this event will go toward the

purchase of Google Chrome Books for students at

SBS next year. In addition, the Foundation will

continue to provide scholarships to SBS students to

attend extracurricular programs such as The Stars

Challenge, Small Factory Productions and

Bricks4kidz.

We are extremely grateful for your continue support

at our fundraising events. The success of the

Foundation is a direct reflection of the generous

community that we live in. We are thankful for your

commitment to our mission and for investing in our

children. We rely on donations like yours to

succeed in our quest to bring the best technology to

SBS, and truly appreciate your continued support.

Sincerely,

Lisa Kane

President, Foundation for Shrewsbury Education

*Christ Church donated a basket that included

various CC items as well as a visit to the Clock

Tower. A special thanks to Judy Buncher for

putting it all together!

We are in process of preparing the fall schedule!! Please let us know if you have any dates you are

not available. Please also let us know if you are

interested in joining any of our teams. We are in

need of additional members to serve in a number of

areas. There is minimal training required.

SLEEP OUT

might be interested in this type of unique

Fundraiser.....although the event is in NYC the

MARTHA’S CUPBOARD

EXPANDS MINISTRY

We are excited to report that with the cooperation of

St. John’s, Little Silver and Trinity Church, Asbury

Park, we will be expanding the services Martha’s

Cupboard provides to the residents of Washington

Manor to include the organization of game night

activities, art classes, and wellness clinics on a

rotating basis throughout the month.

Washington Manor is an apartment complex which

provides 100 units of affordable housing in the

Long Branch community for 200+ individuals who

might not otherwise be able to afford to live in a

desirable location along there Jersey Shore.

In addition to the food distribution Dianne Regiec

coordinates the fourth Thursday of every month,

Carol McKeever (Christ Church, Game Night),

Eileen Kennedy (St. John’s, Drawing & Music), and

the Healthcare Team at Trinity Church, will help

further promote a sense of community and aid the

overall health of the residents through positive

social interaction. As with the food distribution

program, additional volunteers are always

welcome. If you would like to take advantage of

the opportunity to help establish a relaxing and

inviting environment to foster trust and fellowship

to others in need, you may contact Mother Lisa or

Deacon Bill and they will work you into the weekly

schedule.

BOOK SALE LEADER NEEDED!

From time to time Christ Church has opened the

doors of the Parish House on a Saturday to allow

the public to come in and purchase books. In the

past, Louise Aders graciously hosted the event.

With her passing last year, the spot has remained

vacant and we are looking for a person to take this

on. Like to try it on for size? There are plenty of

people to help get the books out (and put them

away) and others who will be glad to spend the

morning here helping out. Please contact the Church

Office or speak to either Joanne Montgomery or

Mother Lisa if you are interested.

Backpacks for a Smooth

Start to School

Now is a great time to think about the children in

Monmouth County who will need supplies when

they go back to school in September.

Once again this year, we will help children here in

Monmouth County begin the school year with

needed materials and supplies by participating in

our backpack program. There are children who

come to school without the needed supplies such as

pencils and notebooks, delaying or impeding their

fresh start to the new school year. We hope to make

a difference for some of these children. Please

consider providing a child with some needed

supplies such as:

Sturdy backpack, pencils, pens, crayons,

markers, colored pencils, highlighters, zippered

pencil case, spiral notebooks (no binders),

homework notebooks, child scissors, glue sticks,

marble notebooks, erasers, and other young

child specific supplies. The target grade levels are 1

st to 5

th grades.

Please bring the backpacks or supplies to church

any day before Sunday September 4th

, when they

will be blessed and delivered to the school guidance

counselor during that first week of school.

Please help us help some children again this year.

Your generosity is appreciated.

Elaine Feyereisen

*We have had a number of backpacks donated.

If you see an empty one in the Narthex, take one

home, fill it with supplies and return it!

New Class of Education Formation Ministry

LAST CALL FOR EFM!!!

We have one slot open for our next EFM seminar

group which is slated to begin on Tuesday,

September 6th. EFM (Education, Formation,

Ministry) is a program that explores Scripture,

Church History, Contemporary Theology, and

imaginative worship. Registration must be made by

August 5th. Do call or email the Church Office

immediately if you are interested in learning more.

Peace, Mother Lisa Mitchell+

GFS News:

On July 12th, our Chapter of Girls Friendly Society

held its final meeting of the program year with a

Tea at the White House in Oakhurst. As we dined

on scones and special desserts, we learned all about

GFS Nationals in Connecticut from Dorrie and Erin

Pedalino, who had participated in the event (which

occurs once every three years).

Later in the month, five of us attended New Jersey

Week at Holiday House in Cape May. Mother Lisa

provided the program design and the worship

content for the week, she and Stacy Reagan were

leaders/teachers, and Dorrie Pedalino came to lead

the girls in several interesting crafts. We had a

wonderful time!

Our next event will be a Cook out and Swim Party,

open to any girls in our parish who would like to

attend. It will take place on Sunday, August 21st,

from 3pm to 8pm at the Ocean Township Pool.

Please RSVP to the Church office by August 17th.

The Pool Party will be the official Kick Off for a

new year of GFS!

Altar, Narthex and Sanctuary Lamp

Offerings

Let us celebrate God our Creator at the altar with

flowers each Sunday. Flowers about the altar

symbolize God’s gift of life to us. Without flowers

most vegetation would perish in a generation or

two, for flowers contain the mechanism of

perpetuation. God is our true source of life here and

ever after. Giving flowers in thanksgiving of an

event in your life or remembering others to the

glory of God focuses us into the Eucharistic

celebration at the Lord’s Table.

Please give a donation for the Flowers or the

Sanctuary Candle. Plenty of spaces are available -

the sign-up list is in the Narthex of the church. We

also are accommodating more than one donation on

a single date. Many thanks! Altar Flowers - $4

Family promise of Monmouth County works with

over forty community agencies, faith-based services

and synagogues to provide safe overnight shelter,

food and compassion to local families in crisis.

Trinity Church, our sister parish in Asbury Park,

has agreed to be a Host Congregation the week of

September 4th

through September 9th

. They have

asked Christ Church to provide additional

volunteers and support. They have specifically

asked us to prepare the main course for dinner (a

max. of fourteen family members) one evening

during the week, Thursday, September 8th

. This

includes preparing and serving the meal, eating with

the families, and cleaning up after dinner. If you

are interested in being part of our volunteer team,

please email Deacon Bill at

WBalmer@valleynationalbank, or call the Parish

Office. Thank you so much.

Green Thumb Needed! The Memorial Garden, near the

handicap ramp, is in need of a

special person to be its primary

caregiver. For years we had

parishioners who cared lovingly for the garden. Is

there someone who would like to tend the weeds,

trim where needed and beautify the garden flowers

on a regular basis? There are also other locations

on the church property where parishioners could

lend a “weeding” hand. From the Memorial Garden

to the front of the church are patches of weeds that

need removal. Call Elaine – 732-742-1227 or speak

to Mother Lisa if you have the green thumb that

would benefit our church garden beautification

project.

LAY MINISTRY SCHEDULES

It’s almost time for us to start preparing the fall

schedule!! Please let us know if you have any dates

you are not available. A reminder that once the

schedule has been distributed YOU are responsible

for finding a replacement or someone to

switch/trade dates with. Please notify the office of

any arrangements/changes you have made. If you

have trouble finding a replacement/trade, you may

also (as soon as possible) Email the church office

for additional help. We will circulate an Email to

help you to find a replacement and advise you of

our findings. Thanks so much.

Ushers Wanted!!

We are always looking for ushers. We don’t care if

you are old or young, short or tall, blond or

brunette!!!! The ushers play a very important role.

They are the 1st people (after the greeter) that a

visitor meets and are often the ones who answer the

visitor’s questions. If you are considering being an

usher, please chat with me or Mother Lisa.

Peggy James

Please also let us know if you are interested in

joining ANY of our teams. We are in need of

additional members to serve in a number of

areas. There is minimal training required.

NEW ON THE WEB SITE

We are adding a new feature to our web site, called

the Community Bulletin Board. In this space we

will post information about activities in the broader

community that are aligned with our mission. One

example is the research being done by a doctoral

student into the needs of LGBT elderly. This effort

is tied to our mission in that it reflects inclusiveness.

If you have any such items to post let me know.

Holiday Bazaar

2016 Mark your calendars….Our Holiday Bazaar is

scheduled for Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Although it seems far away, there’s lots of work

to be done. We will be scheduling a volunteer

meeting soon. We need everyone’s help to

make this a success! Let us know if you are

interested in helping out.

Thanks in advance!

SDRG PROJECT STATUS REPORT

July 31, 2016

1. The winning bid for the gravemarker repairs

has been selected. The awardee is Jablonski

Building Conservation. The first phase of

repair work will target 12 brownstones plus

the gravemarker of Clara Wheeler. The next

step is to sign a contract with JBC.

2. Becker’s tree service performed tree work at

the Rectory and Church in late July. The

major item was the removal of a dead 100

foot tulip tree at the Rectory. This aspect of

the SDRG work is now complete.

3. Bids for construction at the Rectory and

Church will be issued in August. The final

Condition Assessments for both sites are

now in and are in the parish office. These

are remarkable documents stating in great

detail the status of our two historic

properties as of this date. They serve as an

invaluable resource for repair and

maintenance for years after the completion

of the grant work.

4. Drawings of both buildings that show the

locations of the grant funded work are in the

parish hall as well. They are in both 8 ½ x

11 and 24 x 36 format.

Everybody loves a Wedding!

PRIVATE WEDDINGS AT CHRIST CHURCH

You may recall that as a fundraising approach, we

opened our church up for private wedding rentals!

We are in need of some additional volunteers to

help market the service, to negotiate dates and

options with prospects, to open and close the

church, etc. If you’d like to help couples celebrate

their special day in our beautiful space, please

contact us!

If you know of someone who might be interested in

using our church for his/her wedding, please ask

them to contact us.

CHRIST CHURCH CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY

2016

On July 3rd Christ Church held its annual “Star

Spangled Celebration.” The festivities included

costumed portrayals of individuals interred in the

graveyard by members of the Dead Actors’ Guild

and a performance of patriotic songs by the Chorus

of the Atlantic. These elements were integrated into

the regular Sunday service. Afterwards in the parish

house, For the costumed performances Judy

Buncher portrayed Shrewsbury historian Louise

Jost, Bob Kelly portrayed Revolutionary historian

Samuel Stelle Smith, and Patrice Thornton

portrayed Graham Kearny Cooke. There was a

display of historic objects in the church.

Monmouth County Historical Society Annual Reading of the

Declaration of Independence and Christ Church Clock Tower

Raffle Drawing July 4, 2016

Christ Church partnered with the borough of

Shrewsbury, the Shrewsbury Historical Society, and

the Monmouth County Historical Association in

celebrating Independence Day. The ceremony was

held at the Allen House and was highlighted by the

reading of the Declaration of Independence by

many of our citizens. Mother Lisa gave an

invocation and told the story of Aaron Burr’s father-

in-law buried in the Christ Church graveyard with

his gravemarker in the nave of the church.

Following this ceremony the clock tower raffle was

drawn with three winners each of whom is entitled

to a tour for three of the four level clock tower. The

winners were; Gail Reilly, Frank Munn and Joan

Addison.

Following the drawing, members of the Dead

Actors’ Guild gave performances in the graveyard

of individuals interred there. Magdalena Aders

portrayed Florence Hazard and told the Hazard

family story. Bob Kelly portrayed a 20th century

historian who wrote about Revolutionary military

history.

MONMOUTH COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY VISITS CHRIST CHURCH

On July 10th

, the Monmouth County Genealogical

Society visited Christ Church. About 60-70

members attended. Parish Historian Bob Kelly gave

the group a tour of the church reviewing its history

and interesting objects. On display were the 1733

Parish Register, the 1769 Builder’s agreement and

the two 1758 Lottery Tickets.

The visitors were also treated to performances by

two members of the Dead Actors’ Guild. Judy

Buncher portrayed Louise Jost and Patrice Thornton

portrayed Graham Kearny Cooke.

Did You Know?

Stories of Christ Church History

by: Robert M. Kelly, Jr.

Parish Historian

“Did You Know … ?”

That there are many post cards of the church

especially popular in the earliest days of this

medium? If you recall the Images Exhibit, you saw

many of these on display.

There are only a few that show objects interior to

the church. I have seen ones of the verger rods and

the Bishop’s chair. But recently Casey found one

on-line for sale and we snatched it up. Here it is.

As you can see it is of the Vinegar Bible and with

the postcard postmark of 1909, it is likely a photo

taken only a few years earlier.

As you likely know the Bible was printed in

Oxford, England in 1716 and acquired by us in

1752 as a gift from Roger Elliston, Comptroller of

his Majesty’s Customs in New York, and used as

the church’s lectionary Bible until 1936

This provides us with a view of the Vinegar Bible

when it was still in active use. The binding does not

seem very sturdy. It was almost 200 years old then!

Note that it is open to the Parable of the Vineyard

Luke 20.

And of course its name is due to a misprint with the

Parable of the Vineyard typeset as Parable of the

Vinegar. Thus it is made famous much like the most

famous tower in Italy in Pisa is so well-known

because it is wrong!

You might note the credit to a German firm for its

lithography. Those processes were much more

mature in Germany than here at the time. But it was

also marketed by J Wickoff of Red Bank which

may have been where the sender bought it. As you

can see it cost one cent to mail and probably the

same to purchase.

One can only speculate how this came about.

Perhaps Wickoff hired a photographer to take

pictures of historical objects and buildings locally

for the creation of the postcards. He would have had

to arrange permission to do so from the vestry for

photographs inside the church.

So not only a snapshot of one of our prized

possessions but some insight into one aspect of

local life 100 years ago.
