Schedule for This Week

Our local Knights, Council 1641, honored our alter servers with a pizza party. The party was for their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of service to our church. They enjoyed pizza, pop, shot some“hoops”, played bean bag toss, kick ball, and socialized. The Knights encourage all of us to give them a Big “thank you” for their journey in faith.

Do we have your correct phone number? When our pictorial directory is printed, it will include the names, addresses and phone numbers of our parishioners. Those who attended a photo session filled out information cards, so we know those will be correct. However...if your phone number has changed since you registered in Christ Our Light Parish, we probably do not have that information. Please fill out the following form and return it to the parish office as soon as possible. You may place it in the offertory basket at Mass. If you have additional changes to be made, please fill out a new registration form. They can be found in the book rack in the vestibule of St. Benedict Church and in the back of Sts. Peter & Paul Oratory.

Pastor’s Letter

Thank you, again, to Fr. David Delich, OP, a representative for Food for the Poor. I trust that all will be able to discern the appropriate level of participation in the work of this organization that is best. I trust that Fr. David’s visit will spark a deeper gratefulness in each of us for our blessings and will show us opportunities to express our solidarity both with brothers and sisters in Christ living in destitute circumstances and with people in need beyond our Church community.

While we have faith formation resources now available for free to all in the parish online at formed.org (remember that the parish code is QARQ3C), it’s also good for us to remember the radio and TV resources available to us as well. I’m sure that the Catholic network, EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), is readily available through all of the area cable TV providers and certainly through satellite TV providers as well. Did you know that there are at least three Catholic radio stations whose signals reach Guernsey County? It might depend upon the weather, if you are using an antenna at home or in the car, and in which part of the County you are, but these are the three stations: 820 AM, St. Gabriel Radio from Columbus; 1060 AM, Immaculate Heart Radio, Akron/Canton; 106.7 FM, WAOB from Pittsburgh.

Look forward to joining both our Knights of Columbus and St. Benedict School students and families at this year’s Christmas Parade in Cambridge on Saturday, November 28th. They are building a float with the theme “Keep Christ in Christmas.” Thank you for providing that public witness to our larger community.

May the Lord continue to help us all both in Guernsey County and beyond to journey together ever more generously and joyfully, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

On this Solemnity of Christ the King, we recall that all things were created through Christ, our Alpha and Omega. The secular world distracts and sometimes dissuades us from the truth and hope of the Trinity. We offer up our hearts in praise and thanksgiving these next five weeks, giving room to the love of the Christ child. The students at St. Benedict remind me every day of the joy and laughter in the hearts of our children. Who better than they to teach this Gospel joy?

Our annual Canned Food Drive will continue through Wednesday. All non-perishable food will be donated to the Grace Food Pantry to help families throughout the county in these coming months.

We will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 25, at 8:35 a.m.. Join our students as we sing praise to God and celebrate the Eucharist as a school community. The Kindergartners will celebrate their Thanksgiving Feast in the afternoon before we break for a 5-day weekend.

Be sure to purchase SCRIP gift cards for your gift-giving this Christmas season. Thanks for all of your support of this program throughout the year!

Blessings, Jane Rush

Show your appreciation for our Seminarians by giving them a Christmas Card. There are designated boxes in the Marian Room of St. Benedict Church and at the back of Sts. Peter & Paul Oratory. Please drop off your cards by Sunday, December 13. OUR SEMINARIANS: Deacon Matthew Gossett, Deacon Ryan Gray, Jeremiah Hahn, Andres Chivel, Nicholas Ginnetti, Nicholas Ward, Joel Wright & Josh Erickson

READINGS FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENTSunday, November 29, 2015

The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. As we begin this holy season of Advent, may our hearts be filled with hope and anticipation as we await the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The reading from Jeremiah is a reassurance of the promise that God will send salvation. This salvation is not an abstrac-tion but will come in and through a real person to be born in the family of David. The signs of salvaton are justice and peace.

The gospel exhorts us to “stay awake” and be ready for the return of the Lord. We do not know the time, but we do know that it will be a time of justice and peace as the first reading tells us. Therefore, our “being ready” involves a constant striving for what is right and just in the world.

Jeremiah 33:14-16I will raise up for David a just shoot.- What is your understanding of the “justice” of the Lord?

1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2Increase your love for one another.- Who are those who are most difficult for you to love? Why?

Luke 21:25-28, 34-36You will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and glory.- How are you living in anticipation of the coming of the Lord?

Like bookends or parenthesis around the celebration of Jesus as Christ the King are words of warning that are meant to help us be ready for Jesus’ return in glory. That might be surprising for us to begin the liturgical year with a passage about Jesus’ “advent” at the end of time. It might seem like rather than focusing on the New Year’s baby still focused on the year past. Nevertheless, the focus is meant to help us see the distractions of this passing world in a better light.

We might also be able to accept this word from Jesus more readily if we consider the cultural context of those who heard these words preached by Him and the communities that first heard this passage from the Gospel of Luke.

John J. Pilch points out in his book, The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle C, “In particular, [St. Luke] cautions against carousing, drunkenness and worldly cares (v. 34), which weigh a person down and distract from pressing issues. [Western and modern people] may snicker at this trio of distractions and conclude that our ancestors in the Faith were not very different from us. That would be a serious mistake.

“The ordinary peasants, who constituted about 95% of the population of first-century Palestine, lived at a subsistence level and would hardly have the means or the opportunity to carouse, to get drunk, or to dream about and pursue creature comforts. They regularly worried about where the next meal was coming from and whether there would be enough for everyone. In other words, they were intensely focused on the present moment and the challenge of staying alive.

“No, this kind of warning would have been directed particularly to the elites, who had both the leisure and the opportunity to carouse and to get drunk and to allow them-selves to be consumed by ‘worldly cares.’ Luke addresses especially the wealthy who are greedy, who refuse to share (see Luke 12:13-34, esp. v. 15) with the needy, as this culture honorably requires. Indeed, at every mention of the ‘rich’ in Luke’s Gospel it is advisable to cross out that word and pencil in ‘greedy.’ That is what irks [Jesus presented by St. Luke] and, indeed, all the people of Luke’s Gospel” (p. 2).

Praise God that we have the leisure time and health to enjoy various facets of life. At the same time, may we be inspired, converted and brought alive by Jesus who

entered into our world as a humble child in humble circumstances. May we be focused more on opportunities to reach out effectively to the needs around us than on our desire to accumulate. May this Advent season and this first week’s reminder of the end of our lives help us to be ready to welcome Jesus both at His surprisingly humble birth at Christmas and at His awe-inspiring return in glory.

The Advent Wreath Tradition

Advent is meant to be a preparation time for the coming of Jesus; a time of anticipation with joyful expectation that His birth will be commemorated at Christmas

The Advent Wreath is a very old tradition, probablyoriginating in the time of the Renaissance in middle European countries. Now, many families create their own version and use it in their prepara-tion for the coming of Jesus.

It can be elaborate or simple, suiting one’s own good taste. It can be suspended or placed on a table. Pine boughs, cedar, holly or ribbon can be used and placed about four candles equidistant about the wreath. The candles are normally three purple and one rose. Some families replace the candles at Christmas with red or white and add a dominant candle in the center.

On Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent, the family gathers to bless the wreath.

Prayer:

O God, who sanctifies all, bless this wreath and grant that we may use it to prepare for the coming of the Baby Jesus and that we may receive abundant grace, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
