Cadet Shippy Shot.Harry Shippy, aged 1.9, son of
Chief of Police Shippy of Chica
go. and cadet at the Culver M ilita
ry academy, was shot by an an
archist who attempted to assassin
ate his father in Chicago on Mon
day morning.
The anarchist, a Russian Jew of
recent importation, appeared at the
Shippy home and was met at the
door bv Chief Shippy. In hand
ing Shippy an addressed envelope
(which was afterwards found to
contain a piece of blank paper)
Shippy’s suspicions were aroused
and he caught the man by both
wrists, at the same time calling up
on his wife to search the man. Mrs.
Shippy discovered a revolver iu
the man's overcoat pocket, but his
struggles were so violent that she
could not secure it. Attracted by
the calls of Shippy his driver
came from the sidewalk and his
son from upstairs. The anarchist
had by this time freed one hand
and shot rapidly, putting a ball
through Harry’s body and shatter
ing the hand of the driver. He
then made a lunge with a knife at
the chief, inflicting a bad cut in
his side. Both Shippy and the
driver tired repeatedly at their as
sailant who fell dead ou the door
step.
Young Shippy is expected to
recover, though in a serious condi
tion. II is record at tho academy
is a good one, instructors and fel
low students according him high
praise for his efficiency and con
duct. He left the institution Jan.
3 1 on sick leave.
Tho attack on Shippy is be
lieved to be part of an organized
plan by the anarchist element to
murder police and civic officials
who are obnoxious to them. This
element, as well as other lawless
characters in Chicago, has been
growing bolder of late, encouraged
by the toleration which the author
ities have shown for law-breakers.
Conditions in Chicago are notori
ously bad. Public sentiment is vi
tiated by the political and liquor
interests, and naturally the harvest
produced by such a sowing is dis
order, crime and graft.

The first arrivals for the basket
ball game on the twenty-second

find the gymnasium still deserted
and no cadets to be seen outside.
The cause of this phenomenon was
later discovered to have been the
dinner upon which Steward Wick

doing themselves proud. The me

Rev. Mr. Nicely then delivered a
35-minute address. He gave a brief
review of the history of the organ

from the familiar incident of the
heroic friendship of the soldier
Pythias for the senator Damon in
the city of Syracuse, island of Sic
ily, 700 B. C. In well-chosen
words and appreciative sentiments
the speaker paid a worthy and elo
quent tribute to the spirit of fra
ternity which the Pythian and kin
dred orders exemplify and which
tends to keep sweet and pure the
relations of man to his brother. It.
was a fine address, characteristic
of the good taste and ability which
always distinguish Mr. Nicely’s ef
