THE CURRENT SCENARIO
India's Poor Are Eating into Their Savings, Thanks To High Inflation & COVID-19
Rising inflation is forcing millions of households in India to cut back on food and dip into their savings for
essentials. Economists warn that sustained high inflation could wipe out gross household savings,
hampering future economic recovery because households would have no money to spend.
"I drive from morning to night, and all I save [these days] is Rs 200-250 a day after paying for fuel and rent
for the rickshaw," Sharma told IndiaSpend. In December 2020, when he went to the Mohammadpur mandi
near R.K. Puram in South Delhi, he was surprised that tomatoes were selling for Rs 80 a kilo.
That day, he did not buy his essential groceries. "We stopped eating
vegetables for some time and got by, eating just rice. On some days, we
would eat parathas with salt. I hope the prices come down soon; else there is
only one way for poor people like us: we will die," Sharma said. "I have four
daughters to feed."
One day, after weeks of hustling to find a way to pay for his family's
expenses, Sharma did something that he had rarely done before: He went
to his bank and withdrew most of his life's savings of about Rs 20,000. "Was
there any other way?" he said with sadness, adding, "I do not talk about
these things… not to my family, not to anyone, but many times I have felt like
crying." Source: IndiaSpend
In March 2020, The Akshaya Patra Foundation turned all its resources to Food Relief Efforts across the country.
Beginning with Cooked Meals distributed from our kitchens and Grocery Kits, we soon expanded our efforts to
include Happiness Kit distribution to Mid-Day Meal beneficiaries. Now, as the devasting second wave of the
pandemic sweeps the country, we have begun serving pre-packaged meals to offer aid where wholesale meals
cannot be distributed.
Food Relief Efforts have also extended to flood-ravaged communities in Bihar and Assam,
and distribution of grocery kits to pregnant and lactating mothers, and young children in Anganwadi Centres.

The Foundation extends it gratitude to Crompton Foundation

like to thank our dedicated volunteers for their unstinting
on-ground support.
