THE Secretary of State has dismissed appeals by developers Muller for the first phase of the Nantwich South proposals. The plans to build 189 new homes on land in Stapleley were rejected last week following concerted efforts by Cheshire East Council to stop the development. It follows a council victory in the High Court over 170 homes in Willaston and successful appeal decisions concerning 300 homes in Wistaston and 880 homes in Shavington.

The Secretary of state expressed concerns that the proposals from Muller Property Group – for land between Audlem Road, Broad Lane and Peter de Stapleigh Way – would involve the loss of countryside and the best and most versatile agricultural land. He added that there should be no assumption that development of this nature should proceed on a piecemeal basis. He concluded that the scheme ‘fails to represent sustainable development

in terms of being the most effective way of improving the economic, social and environmental conditions of the wider area’.

Council leader Michael Jones, of Nantwich, said: “This once again vindicates our

approach to the promotion of sustainable development and reinforces the fact that there is no planning ‘free for

all’ whilst we finalise our planning frameworks. “People can be assured that we will make every effort to prevent inappropriate development, to preserve our precious heritage and get the right development in the right location. “The message to developers is clear – put an end to sporadic housing in the countryside and work with us through our Local Plan and Neighbourhood Plans to provide the sustainable development that our communities want and need.”

NANTWICH Singers will be performing an Easter concert at St Mary’s Church on April 3 at 7.30pm. The Good Friday concert also marks the retirement of musical director Tony Metcalfe after 25 years in the role. Tony began as a tenor member of the Tudor Consort as the Nantwich Singers were then known, and took over the directorship in 1988. He is also well known as the director of music for St Mary’s Parish Church, a post he has held since 1993. Tony also organises the popular series of Summer

Lunchtime Concerts held between June and August in St Mary’s. Under Tony’s leadership, the Nantwich Singers, a chamber group of around 16 experienced voices, have performed a great variety of music, more than 200 different choral works from across the centuries. His last concert as director of the Singers, including a chamber orchestra, starts at 7.30pm and entry is free. The main work will be John Rutter’s ‘Requiem’, one of the most atmospheric of modern devotional works for Passiontide.

A VILLAGE sports group has received a £8,200 grant from Cheshire East Council. The cash will support Wistaston Sports and Leisure Association’s application for £75,000 from environmental body Wren to help pay for a pavilion extension. The WSLA is an independent ‘not-for-profit’ organisation set up in 1997 to encourage sport in the village. WSLA chairman Derek Millington said: “The extension to the pavilion is much needed and we hope that, once completed, it will help us to really put WSLA on the map by attracting more

and more people to join us.” Membership of the association is open to any local resident and any local sports club can affiliate to the association. Currently, three football clubs, the village cricket club and the local community council are affiliated. Parish councillor Ray Westwood added: “The new extension will more than double the size of our function room and we’ll also have a large patio area, where people can watch the cricket and football. “We currently have a membership of around 500.”

THE Town Council’s pilot scheme for tackling on-street parking problems in Nantwich is resulting in fewer contraventions. The areas visited by Cheshire East Enforcement officers are being varied under the direction of the council with officers visiting known problem locations and patrolling at different times of the day. Councillor Marren, who initiated the scheme, said “This new approach is identifying locations where there have been persistent breaches of the parking regulations particularly in the evenings when it is assumed the officers are not on duty. “The regulations have been introduced for good reason to control parking over 24 hours and not just during the day time. “I would encourage residents

to notify the council of any breaches so that they can be investigated.” Residents can notify the council of any problems by ringing the office on 01270 619224 or emailing [email protected].

The council can only deal with enforcing double and single yellow lines, disabled parking close to junctions and parking in front of dropped footways and in front of private driveways if a prior complaint has been made and investigated by Cheshire East.

Pilot scheme a success

A NEW exhibition called Tech Styles has opened at Nantwich Museum. Inspired by Quarry Bank Mill and its environs, the display will run at the venue until Saturday 13 June.

The exhibition celebrates the legacy of the innovative use of science and technology by the Greg family who occupied the mill for a time. Admission is free and all the artwork is available for sale.

HUNDREDS of families flocked to Reaseheath College last month for its annual lambing weekends. Spring arrived in the college’s lambing sheds with the arrival of the first newborns of the season. Visitors were able to meet the lambs and some were lucky enough to experience a live birth. Reaseheath’s lambing weekends have been a community highlight for more than two decades. This year the college boasted

a flock of 460 expectant ewes which produced some 1,000 lambs. As well as meeting the ewes and their new families, visitors were able to watch a big screen showing highlights of the action and watch experts demonstrating the special care required for the delivery and care of the lambs. There were also plenty of activities at Reaseheath’s zoo, which houses over 1,000 animals including meerkats, lemurs, tapirs and otters.

LOCAL councillor Brian Silvester has started a campaign to save a late night weekend bus between Nantwich and Willaston. He said, “The late night weekend C84 bus between Nantwich and Willaston, which is run by Arriva,is being taken off in a few weeks time on the 22/315. “The bus is well used by residents who go into town for a weekend drink and entertainment. “I am told that around 25 people use the bus at the weekend. I cannot understand

why Arriva would want to take it off because with that level of usage it must be a viable service. “I have contacted Arriva and the council and I would advise residents to support the campaign by contacting them to show the level of support for this service. “If it is lost it will probably be lost forever and that would be a great shame. “We should encourage the use of the buses and especially at the weekend because it results in less drinking and driving and that must be better for all concerned.”

THE annual Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music festival hits the town between April 2 and 6. The town centre will be alive with music as the festival, now in its 19th year, draws tens of thousands of visitors. Five of the festival’s seven headlining acts will be hitting the stage of Nantwich Civic Hall. Among the big names at the Civic is Thea Gilmore & Her Band.

Local lady Thea, (pictured above) makes a welcome return following her sell-out success in 2014, opening the show on Thursday April 2. A man whose vocals and distinctive voice put him in a class of his own, Andy Featherweather-Low (pictured right) & The Low Riders perform on Friday April 3 and rocking the stage on Saturday April 4 are FM. A treat is in store for Easter

Sunday with a double bill from King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys (main pic) and The Stumble and The Blues Band close the weekend on the Monday.

Also included in the festival’s headliners are Connie Lush at The Crown Hotel on Good

Friday and Claire Martin & The Montpellier Cello Quartet appearing at St Mary’s Church on Easter Monday. As always organisers have been working tirelessly throughout the year to guarantee a first class weekend, with 15 of the town’s local pubs, bars and clubs also participating. Wristbands for the festival are now on sale and available to purchase online or direct from the Civic Hall. For more information and tickets visit www.nantwichjazz.com or call 01270 625283.

STAND-UP comedy returns to the Civic Hall on Friday May 1. Taking to the stage will be Matt Reed, returning to the venue after his last appearance over two years ago. He will be acompanied by three very different acts. Henry Paker has history was at the first ‘Very Best In Stand Up’ show at Crewe’s M Club, when he shared the stage with Jason Cook, Patrick Monahan and Reginald D Hunter. Mundo Jazz, played the last show at The M Club - before the show moved to Nantwich Civic in 2010 - sharing the stage that night with Chris Ramsey, Rufus Hound and Greg Davies. Closing the evening will be Charlie Baker. A true showman, Charlie’s a high energy act that will add the gloss to five years of laughs at Nantwich Civic Hall. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 and available online at www.civiccomedy.co.uk.

IN THE MARKETDabbers boss on the lookout for new recruitsNANTWICH Town manager Phil Parkinson says he is going to be looking in the transfer market as he looks to bolster his squad for the run-in. Recently the new manager could only name four subs at Barwell due to injuries and suspensions. And the Nantwich boss now feels its time to dip into the market. He said: “I will do now is look to bolster the team with another red card coming in. I have got to go into the market to look for a player and obviously an out and out goal scorer because that is now six games our two strikers hasn’t scored. “Obviously Matty Kosylo and Steve Jones has been chipping in. “So I think it is glaringly obvious that I need to move in

that area. “I think I have got two good strikers that doesn’t mean I don’t think any less of them. “But I have got to address and issue from that position and I may need to bring in a defender if Cliff isn’t still right by the weekend because the deadline is drawing closer.” His words preceded the signing of Liam Shotton. The 6ft 3ins target man previously spent a short spell with the Dabbers early on in his career back in 2008, but has recently been helping to drive Leek Towns Division One promotion challenge with 25 goals. He said: “I am hungry to play at the highest level and after learning of Nantwich’s interest in me and speaking with Phil about his plans for the future. “I am excited about becoming a Dabber again and getting

reacquainted with the wonderful facilities and its supporters.” With the transfer deadline looming large in the Northern Premier League it will a be tough task for Parkinson to make more signings. But he said he is confident that even without new additions the Dabbers can avoid the drop.

He said: “I think I have got to be thinking like that because if I believe we will go down that I might as well of told Jon to find someone else to take the job. “I can keep them in this league, I have got the players to keep us in this league. “I have got to get them from the off like we did [at Barwell]in the second half.”
