Did you know...

Ballet emerged in late 15 century Renaissance court of Italy, as a dance interpretation of fencing!

I llusion of FlightThe most elegant and demanding routines in ballet are based on techniques that create illusions of flight. The goal is to make a ballet dancer appear to defy the laws of physics. For example, during the grand jeté, the dancer appears to hover. Observors have limited ability to spot center of mass when a projectile changes its configu-ration in flight. Hence, ballet dancers extends their arms and legs, which cam-ouflages the fall and leads the audience to perceive the dancer is floating. Cool!

I

magine a world...where movements are synchronized, minds harmonized, attentions focused, mis-takes forgiven, second chances abundant, and victories irrelevant. In this world, English is everybody’s second language – their first is dance.

I would like to dedicate the inaugural issue of the Dance Paper to those inspired men and women who treat the world as the dance floor it is meant to be.

This article marks the first of our new column for The Dance Paper, entitled “I2”. Being Ballroom Dancers and DanceSport Cham-pions, we hope to spark “Inspiration and

Information” into your personal world of dance. We have learned so much from other forms of dance, that we would like to take this opportunity to give back to the larger dance community by sharing with you, our world of Ballroom Dancing.

We are very excited about this new endeavor that The Dance Paper has taken on. We hope that it will bring the dance community closer together, in all forms, whether it be Salsa, Hip Hop, Ballet, Swing or Ballroom. As we learn more about each other, we can gain respect and share our passion of dance together.

Discovering The Fire

To begin, I would like to tell you a story… It was a story told to me by my mentor of an experi-ence he had some years ago that marked a turning point in his dancing career. At the time, he and his partner were already at the highest level of Profes-sional Ballroom Dancing. Although he was well into his prime, he felt stale with his improvement and decided to go to a small theatre in London to see an Argentine Tango show.

In the small, dimly lit theatre, there was a small band in the corner and a young, beautiful woman waiting centre stage. Then, a small, old man ap-peared onto the stage. With his hunched-over posture, balding head and aged body, he took the woman into his arms. Suddenly, the woman was transformed; her whole being came to life. Her body was on fire as the old man danced her around the stage.

Seeing this unfold before his eyes, my men-tor was both astonished and deeply jealous. How could that old, frail man create such power and energy within such a young and beautiful woman? My mentor had spent his whole life perfecting his posture, technique and physical abilities, was considered one of the best male ballroom dancers in the world, but had never been able to accomplish what that old man did on the stage that night.

From that evening onwards, it was my mentor’s quest to find out how the old man did what he did. He had a newfound purpose in his dancing; and he is now considered by many to be one of the greatest ballroom dancers the world has ever seen.

noT losing sighT oF The Fire

At any level, the ongoing pursuit of becoming a good ballroom dancer (or any kind of dancer for that matter) consists of many hours of learning proper footwork, alignment, and timing. Many of us take group or even private lessons to learn new steps and techniques. Day after day, we practice these techniques and slowly get better, but sometimes in the midst of it all, we still feel like something is miss-ing.

What you learn from your classes and teachers will definitely help you progress to becoming a bet-ter dancer. However, you do not want to lose sight of why you started dancing in the first place. What is it that excites you about dancing? As a dancer, whether you are a beginner, social dancer or com-petitor, don’t you owe it to yourself to find out what it is that inspires you to take lessons, and devote so many hours to practice, and to keep that alive? ‘Why do you dance?’ is what you have to constantly ask and remind yourself.

the Fabulous Ballroom Collection (original recording - remastered)

The Arthur Murray orchestra

This is an interesting compilation of ballroom music with both latin and standard songs. Be-ing a collection of older favourites, the tempo

tends to be slightly faster than current DanceSport standards. The selection is quite

enjoyable nonetheless. Available on Amazon.com

KeePing The Fire burning

I believe that once you find the answer to what you truly want from dancing, then all that is left to do is follow that path. Your goal may be very different than others’. It may be to socialize and have fun with friends, or improve your coordination and physi-cal fitness. Maybe it is to achieve the unbelievable speed and power you’ve been ‘wowed’ by your favourite dancer or to master that illusive art of lead and follow. Maybe it is to emotionally touch people when they watch you perform.

To me, the actual goal is not so important. Neither is achieving it. What is most important is having a prevailing thought or idea that motivates and inspires you to dance, that makes the journey towards the goal so much better. As long as you keep that in mind, everything else will fall into place making your life as a dancer more meaningful and rewarding.

“spotting makes you less dizzy”

Fiction! Spotting will help you maintain a line or direc-tion, but ultimately, your head is still whipping around. TIP: Build your tolerance. Keep spinning until you’re dizzy, stop until you are only half as dizzy, and do it again.

“The hardest thing is to do is one turn”

Fact! Our bodies generate too much power for clean, tight one-footed spins. TIP: Focus on sending the torso thru the turn, this will keep the body creating the power rather than your feet. When you push from your feet your legs will overpower the turn and the turn will falter.

“My foot should be flat on the floor for balance”

Fiction! Your flat foot will only act like a brake against the floor. Also it encourages your center to travel be-tween the hell and ball of the foot, loosening your turn. TIP: Keep your weight on the ball of your foot by bending your knee to compensate for the flex of the foot. Also this will help to ground your turn by keep-ing you at the same level, rather than rising up in the turn.

“My arms actually control my balance”

Fact! Your arms will help to tighten the turn and cre-ate speed. Think of a figure skater speeding up dur-ing a turn. Their arms get tighter to their bodies and they speed up, eventually they throw their arms out to

turning tricksMyles Munroe & Tessa cunninghaMwww.CanadianswingChampions.Com

eXercises For Turns

arms: While practicing your turns hold the right arm still (when turning to the right) and close the left one to initiate

the turn.

balance: stand on one foot (ball) and hold the other one against your calf. Hold as long as possible and change

feet. Work on changing from side to side fluidly holding on one foot for 15seconds then change.

coMbo: Find a pole or a corner that sticks out from the wall. Place the left arm against the pole (turning left). Stand

with all of your weight on the left foot (ball) and torque against the left arm (pull the shoulders to the right until you fell tension across the left pec). Take the right arm and open it to the side. Now close the right arm and send the torso to the left arm in a swift action to initiate the spin. Lightly for one spin (half of what you think it will take) and heavier for more spins.

We all could benefit from a few facts and fic-tions about turn technique. As a jazz/ballet dancer, Myles has focused on his turning abilities for many years. Some of you may have seen him pulling out quad pirouettes or multiple attitude turns... These are some of the key things to making you spin like a top!

stop the turn. TIP: Use your rear arm to play “catch-up” to the front one. This will promote the tightening of your body to the center, and help to speed up your turn and make it more balanced.
