bership requirement. Dr.
Beverly Helms brought
us an inspirational mes-
sage, and we were intro-
duced to a remarkable
young woman, World
Fellowship Recipient
Yadma Chunag from
Mongolia. It was a busy,
enriching meeting.
I look forward to seeing
you at Initiation. Let’s
continue to share a piece
of Pi with each other,
with our early career
educators, and with our
community.
All the best,
Carol Levin
Dear Pi Sisters,
Pi is off to a great start with
a well attended August
meeting at Sharon Gon-
zalez’s home. Thanks,
Sharon. Let’s keep the mo-
mentum going by attending
Initiation on October 25th
at the Elk’s Lodge. The cost
is only $20, and it’s a won-
derful way to welcome our
five initiates into Delta
Kappa Gamma. Thanks to
Martha Chang who opened
her school for Orientation.
Pi will continue to support
Chapman Partnership, His
House, and Women in Dis-
tress locally, and SEE
(Support Early-Career Edu-
cators) and Schools for Af-
rica internationally.
We can be proud of our
chapter’s representation at
the Fall Executive Board/
Workshop Meeting held
recently. Carol Ann Casey,
Sharon Wallen, Barbara
Van Diepen, Anne-Marie
DuBoulay, and Nancy Mar-
mesh took part in the pro-
gram, workshops, and com-
mittee reports while Carol
Bowman graciously repre-
sented us at the SAP work-
shop.
Mu State President Merle
Jones reminded us to con-
tinue sharing our vision and
strengthening our society,
and Carrie Frye stressed
the importance of making
our voices heard in the
Legislature. She and others
urged members seeking
higher degrees to apply for
scholarships at the interna-
tional level. There is no

Sharing A Piece Of Pi… October 2014
We had a wonderful time at Fall Workshop on September 19-20 at the Lake
Mary Marriott. Pi Chapter was well represented by 7 members -- Carol Ann
Casey (Mu State 2nd Vice-President), Barbara Van Diepen (Mu State Awards
Chairman), Carol Levin (Pi President), Sharon Wallen (Education Foundation
Award Recipient), Anne-Marie DuBoulay (Time-Keeper), Carol Bowman (SAP),
and me, Nancy Marmesh representing District V.
On Friday night, we were entertained by a steel drum concert, which included
Carol Ann and her husband, Phil. We also heard a wonderful guitarist from
Stetson University. During the weekend members participated in workshops
ranging from the “Wacky World of School Law” to “The Ghosts of Pensacola.”
Our Executive Board meeting was very informative. We passed the new budget
and business was completed in a timely fashion. We also heard warm reflections
from two (2) DKG sisters who attended the Jesslyn McBride Leadership
Growth Seminar during this past summer.
On Saturday afternoon we attended an enjoyable luncheon. Our guest speaker
was our Immediate Past DKG International President, Beverly Helms. She
thanked Florida DKG members for our support and encouraged us to embrace
the past, live in the present, and strive to become better in the future. All in all
it was a very special weekend.
Four Pi members were present in Indianapolis at the end of July for the
DKG International Convention. Nancy Marmesh, Carol Ann Casey, Sharon
Wallen, and Barbara Van Diepen represented Pi and voted on your behalf.
Three thousand members from 17 countries convened at the convention
center for the opening session and witnessed the parade of flags. For the
first time this impressive event was streamed live so that all DKG sisters
had an opportunity to witness it.
Business was conducted, workshops were held and networking among members was
evident. Florida’s own Dr. Beverly Helms, outgoing International President, conducted

Strategic Action Plan (SAP) Workshop
“Our Strategic Action Plan is a living document.”
Our Strategic Action Plan is a living document. This document is to
be updated each year and is to include input from all members at a
chapter meeting. A healthy chapter includes members from various
generations.
Each generation of women is representative of a specific way of expressing their own way of giving to the
community. The Baby Boomers traditionally want to give cash to help organizations who help others, possi-
bly by holding raffles or bake sales to raise the money. Generations X and Y have a more hands-on orienta-
tion, for instance, working in a clinic to teach hygiene including donating items to improve health. This pro-
ject could be two-tiered. Both generations could work together to accomplish the same project.
The SAP needs to be updated as the needs of the community or interests of the members change. Activities
that have been completed can be replaced by new activities without replacing the project focus completely.
The Jesslyn McBride Leadership Seminar was a wonderful experience. It was an opportunity to meet
other DKG women leaders from Florida. The seminar included: Assertiveness Training, Parliamentary
Procedure, Facilitating Teams, Technology Use in the Classroom, Time Management, Resume Writing,
How to Give a Speech, Business Etiquette, Communication Across the Generations and Leadership
Strengths. All of the sessions were informative and gave clarity on how to become prepared for the
next “85 Years and Beyond.” Pi sisters you should apply early to attend the next leadership seminar in
2016.

that is not DKG sponsored. We are calling it the
Member Education Fund. At the present time
we have $200.00 in this account. We will share
additional information regarding this fund at
our November and/or Decem-

need to be established.
Happy Dollars (Schools for Africa) - $75.00
From the $5.00 lunch fees collected at our Au-
gust meeting and last February’s meeting, which
Sharon Gonzalez and Ellen Kornfield graciously
gave to the Chapter, we voted to give the funds

His House - $115.00

the business sessions which were timely and sometimes conten-
tious. Amendments to the International Constitution and Standing
Rules were voted either up or down. Speakers were serious and
some were light-hearted, but all were exceptional. All in all, it was
one of the best conventions I have attended. I hope that more Pi
sisters will seriously consider attending either or both the South-
east (SE) Regional Conference in 2015 which will be held in Savan-
nah, GA and/or the next International Convention to be held in
Nashville at the Opryland Hotel in 2016. You will view your
membership in DKG in a different light after you attend any inter-
national meeting.
For now, plan on attending our own Mu State Convention in
April of 2015. Come to Lake Mary to show our support for the
incoming Mu State Leadership cadre which we hope will include
Carol Ann Casey.
