The President’s Message
I want to give a special note of gratitude to all you
wonderful Altursans who have stepped up to the
plate to help this year. I started with trepidation
because my physical restrictions, but you have all
been wonderful to me and made this a very satisfying
year. I appreciate you more than you know.
We are coming to the end of our Altrusa year. Please
report your hours to Barbara Bullard. Also in-kind expenses and bills
need to be turned in. If you haven’t done so yet please make
arrangements to pay your dues before the end of May to make it easier
on our Treasurer. We will be making the transition to the new board. The
former and new boards will be meeting together on May 3 for exchange
of materials and ideas for next year. I welcome Ann Eddins and her new
board. She is an experienced leader. Installation will be May 27 at
Yvonne Rowland’s home at 5:30. Please sign up with the membership
committee so we will know how many to plan on.
We will be anxious to hear from the members going to Roswell to
Conference. The will bring back many new good ideas to make our club
better.
As we move on with our new year and the Deltarado day dinner on
Thursday July 16, we have one more way to serve with Altrusa.
Thanks again for my year as President. It has been an honor to serve
with you.

Altrusa Tours the
House of Promise
- written by Becky Tallent,
O n Wednesday, April 15th, a few
Altrusans took some time out of
their busy day to visit the House
of Promise in Olathe. We had a very nice
tour provided by Kyla Lee (Crystal
Hansen’s daughter) who is on staff there.
The House of Promise is part of Teen
Challenge International which is a faith
based, worldwide organization dedicated
to helping individuals who struggle with
life-controlling addictions. Currently
there are 12 young women, 5 children
and one expected-any-time-infant living
at the Olathe location. We were able to
view their living quarters, day care
center, chapel, kitchen-dining room,
library and family room. As we walked
through the facility we couldn’t help but
notice how nicely decorated all the areas
are. There were several comments about
how warm and homey it feels. The
women are able to use the library to
check out books, movies and music. On
Friday nights they have movie night in the
comfy family room. The mornings
begin with chapel time and then
Christian based studies. In the
afternoon they work on basic life
skills such as budgeting, cooking,
cleaning, childcare, sewing and other
various crafts. We met a few
residents in the classroom while they
were studying diligently and a few
more in the kitchen cooking up a
delicious smelling lunch! There are 3
women in the second year program.
They live in a separate building in
their own apartment. During the second
year program they are expected to have a
job, be responsible with some expenses,
tithe and savings. Upon successful
completion of the program they move out
on their own and are able to take their
furniture and basic necessities with them
so they have a good starting point. Most
of the women in the program are not
locals, however, a lot of them choose to
stay and make their home in the local
area.
Altrusa members will be able to help this
organization by donations of non-fiction
Christian Books, Christian music in CD
form, or study Bibles. They could also
use craft supplies such as fabric and
yarn. For more information regarding this
organization, please go to
http://teenchallengerm.org
As we were leaving the House of Promise
and the last blast of winter was blowing
in, I couldn’t help but compare the Lilac
buds anxious for their spring bloom and
then think of the young women who are
now sheltered from their own life’s
storms preparing for their own spring
bloom!

Altrusans
We make our community better through leadership, part-
nership and friendship
Founded in 1917, Altrusa is relevant to many civic leaders
who want to better their communities by addressing local
needs. Altrusans proudly give over a million volunteer
hours a year around the world, including clubs in the Unit-
ed States, Puerto Rico, Canada, England, Bermuda, Ire-
land, India, New Zealand and Russia.
Altrusa attracts a wide cross section of members. The rea-
son they become Altrusans are as varied and numerous as
the communities in which they live. Most have joined be-
cause they were invited by a friend or associate they trust.
Many look for opportunities to meet new friends or to ad-
vance their skills. Some join to meet the people who shape
their communities; while others seek a meaningful new
experience to their lives.
However there are three reasons shared by all:
Altrusans want to make their communities even better
places to live.
Altrusans experience personal growth opportunities,
developing leadership skills as they serve their com-
munities. Altrusans enjoy the satisfaction of knowing their efforts
are valued by the communities they help.
