The Castletownroche Tottenhams a) Mary Louisa Joice Tottenham (1860-1943) was living in Guernsey during the German occupation in World War II. b) The Rev. Charles Francis Bosville Tottenham (1863-1921), M.A. (Trinity College, Dublin). Rector of Castletownroche, Co. Cork. Freeman of Dublin, 1887. He married the daughter of Richard Bolton, of Castle Ring, Co. Louth, and Donaghmoyne. c) Capt. Raymond Charles Tottenham (1890-1967), M.C., was employed on railway construction in Vancouver, 1907-1914. Served in Royal Engineers World War I and was wounded and taken prisoner. He married the daughter of C.R.D. Bearcroft, of Wimbledon. Raymond was a good athlete. He lived in Bournemouth and died in 1967. d) Clive Gordon Tottenham (1891-1980). Indian Police Service, 1911 to 1928; King’s Police Medal during Malabar Operations, 1921-22. He was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1929, and practised in London and on the Oxford Circuit. Major, R.A. (T.A.), World War II, Staff College, 1940, T.D. 1955. Lived at Storrington, Sussex. He married the daughter of R.T.F. Simpson of Bath and New Mexico. After her death he married Gertrude Jane Simpson Corsar. Gertrude Jane Simpson Tottenham (1900-1993), (nee Corsar), educated at Roedean and trained in horticulture at Studley Gardens. An inveterate world traveller in early life she established, on return home to Scotland, a small home animal farm. Before World War II she trained with the Red Cross, passed her examinations, and worked in various hospitals and first-aid posts, specialising in air raid prevention work. During and after the war she distinguished herself whilst in charge of several hundred VAD medics and later with Red Cross work both at home and overseas. For her efforts during the second world war administering voluntary aid detachments in India she was made an Associate of the Royal Red Cross. e) Joice Marjorie Tottenham (1893-1946), like her younger sister Sidney, she played hockey for Munster. f) Rear Admiral (S) Edward Loftus Tottenham (1896-1974), C.B. (1952), O.B.E. (1937), D.L. (1965), (Ned). Joined Royal Navy 1913 and served in World Wars I and II. Mentioned in Despatches. Naval Secretary and third member of New Zealand naval board 1935-39; Assistant Director, Air Equipment, 1944-46; Fleet Supply Officer, East Indies Station, 1946-47: Commanded H.M.S. Ceres, 1948-50. Rear Admiral, 1950. Command Supply Officer, Portsmouth, 1950-53. He and Luise were guests in Westminster Abbey at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Retired. 1953. His wife, Luise, was the daughter of William Gates of Kildorrery, Co. Cork. She was the author of The New Woman, a novel set in Ireland at the end of the 19 th Century, and was also a notable pianist, having been a pupil of Gustav Holst. Both were active in local government in Hampshire and Ned was for many years a County Councillor and a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire. g) Sidney Josephine Tottenham (1897-1947) married Grice Widenham Smyth, of Castletownroche and Glasgow. She, and her sister, Joice, played hockey for Munster. h) Maude Tottenham (1898-1939) married the Rev. A. de Montfort, Rector of Castletownroche. i) Colonel Leonard Bolton Tottenham (1901-1989), D.S.O. (1944). Indian Army, 1921 to 1946. Served with 32 nd Punjab Regiment in Mohmand Operations 1933 and 1935 (mentioned in despatches). Commanded 1/2nd Punjab Regiment in Egypt, Syria, and Italy. He married the daughter of Rev. F.E. Coope, of Thurlestone, Devon; and they adopted a daughter, Elizabeth Joy, in 1938. Last known living in London. j) Anne Luise Tottenham (1925- ), educated at Samuel Marsden School, Wellington, New Zealand (1935 - 1939) and qualified from the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, (1950). O.B.E. (1983). In medical practice all her working life with a particular interest in the Younger Chronic Sick Neurological People. With husband, Brian Hunter, was a founder member of the Alzheimers Disease Society (founded 1979). She is a Serving Sister of the Order of St. John. k) Henry Loftus Tottenham (1936- ), educated at Wellington and The Queen’s College, Oxford; worked for Inchcape Group, 1959-83., in the Middle East, South Pacific and Canada, latterly as Regional Director for the United Arab Emirates, 1980-83. Managing Director, Wimpey Marine, 1984-87; Chairman of British Offshore Supply Vessel Operators Association, 1987. His Wife, Elisabeth, was the daughter of E.J.Thompson Esq., O.B.E., of Malta and Arabia.
