INTRODUCTION

Definition: A derivation of the name Magee, from the Irish Mag Aoidh or Mag Aodha, meaning son of Aodh (an old word for fire). MacKay is a Scottish version of this surname.

Alternate Surname Spellings: MacCoy MacCooey, McCooey, MecCoy, McKey, McKay, MacKay. The Surname (McCoy) has its origins in Ireland, primarily the Ulster region.

The McCoy Coat of Arms is a Blue with a silver chevron, on which there are two daggers pointing at a buck's head, all between three silver bears' heads. The family motto: "Manu forti," means "With a strong hand".

The McCoy's trace their origin back to Scotland. The family was first found in Sutherland (on the east coast of Scotland), where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Their origin there is possibly Lowland, but they had intermarried with the Highland Celtic strain, giving some a slight olive complexion and some dark or auburn hair. They were in general tall, lithe, and handsome. They had a great deal of family pride and clannishness. The McCoy's were in Scotland until around 1700 A.D. at which time they migrated to Ireland. In the early 1700s, the McCoy's started to migrate to America, which was a British Colony.

The earliest known ancestor was a Jacobite in Ireland named John McCoy, whom was (according to some sources) the son of Alexander McCoy and Francis Katherine Sutherland, born in 1690, in Sutherland Shire, Scotland. The Jacobites were loyal supporters of the Stuart King, James II. It is believed that John migrated to Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, after a failed rebellion in 1715, which was to return King James II to the English throne. John worked as a mercenary for English Lord Berresford (as did his brother).

John married a woman with the last name of Martin. The family then migrated to America, traveling from Belfast, Antrim County, Ireland, to America in 1732. John's brothers, James and Daniel, may have come from Ireland with him.

Page 3

Page 4: The Descendants of William O. McCoy and Elizabeth Oldham

In 1737, he received a land grant in Charles County, Maryland, which was a 150-acre tract. (Located today outside of Funkstown, Washington County, Maryland.) John purchased another 50-acre plot in Prince George's County, Maryland, on 11/09/1742 that he named "Neglect" (with 129 more acres in Queen Anne County, on 12/01/1748), and on 08/17/1747, he purchased 54 acres in Charles County, Maryland, which was referred to as "Slatford's Roost Extension."

It is thought the family name was originally spelled McKey and they migrated to Virginia from Pennsylvania, by way of Maryland or New Jersey sometime in the early 1700's, as did many McCoy families. Many McCoy, McKay, MacKay's were Quaker's and moved from Pennsylvania to the Front Royal area in Virginia.

The earliest known Mackay ancestor, Robert Mackay Sr., was a Quaker pioneer who lived in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey and later moved to the Frederick/Warren County Virginia area. Much of his family went there as well. A house which was built by his son Robert Mackay Jr. is still standing in the village of Cedarville, Virginia. A sign has been erected along Rt. 522 South telling about the house.

Many genealogist say William O. McCoy was the great-great- grandson of this Robert (Robert; Moses; Richard; George; William O.), however, there has been no proof that Moses had a son Richard, and no George has been found that could have been the father of William O.

Most of the above information came from the book "The Mac Keys (variously spelled) and allied Families", by Beatrice MacKey Doughtie,

After many hours of research the parents of William O. Mc Coy has not been found. The following is what I was able to prove regarding William O. McCoy and Elizabeth Oldham.

It reads as follows: In the name of God Amen, I William McCoy sen being of feeble health but of sound mind do make this my last will and testament. 1 st I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth McCoy the farm I now live on during her natural life. West Virginia records for Pocahontas County indicates that she was 73 years old at the time of her death, 18 Oct 1873. Her death was reported by her son John.

There is a will on file in the Bath County, Virginia Court dated 20 September 1797 by William Oldham. This will names a daughter Elizabeth. If this William Oldham is Elizabeth's father then her age is older than 73. It reads as Follows: In the name of God Amen. I William Oldham of Bath County revoking all other, appoint this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath my loving wife, Jean, all my lands and moveable's. After her decease the land to be divided between my son William, Thorns, Joseph & David. I give and bequeath my four daughters, Sarah, Nancy, Elizabeth and Rose each of them a horse & saddle also each of them a feather bed. The remaining of the moveable's to be divided amongst them all. After my wife's decease if any money to be divided as above. I appoint John McNeal, Abraham McNeal, James Robuck my Executors of this my last will and testament of which trouble they will receive ?? recompense till the resurrection of the Just. Witness my hand and seal this 20th day of September 1797. His Mark: William Oldham Witness: Joshua Ewing, Aaron Ewing. Before signing I bequeath my son??? 5 shillings and my son Dewry? Oldham five shillings.

Bath County September Court 1797. The last will and testament of William Oldham Deceased was proven in Court by the Executors therein named and proved by the oath of Aaron Ewing and Ordered to be Recorded. Teste: Chas Cameron BCC.

Several people who descend from this William Oldham state that these two Elizabeth Oldham's are different people. They suggest that the younger Elizabeth is a daughter of a brother to this William. No proof as to her parents has been found.

Notes for Charles William "Chuck" Carden(also known as "Spike" to family) Charles "Chuck" resided in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado since Sept 1967. He was employed by

State Farm Insurance in Los Angeles, and moved to North Carolina where he was employed by Gay & Taylor (Insurance Adjusters). He was employed by General Adjustment Bureau in 1966 and was transferred to Boulder in 1967. He was made manager of the Boulder office in 1972. He transferred to Denver in 1974 and was involved in fire and arson investigations until he left in 1976. He associated with FARMERS INSURANCE and opened his own agency in September of that year, where he remains until his retirement in 2003. He and his wife moved to Cape Cod in 2003 Chuck enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves on his 17th birthday in South Charleston, West Virginia. He was a Jr. in high school. During the summer of 1956 he went to boot camp, was returned to reserve status and finished high school. The following August of 1957 he joined the regular Marine Corps, and after additional training went to Oppama, Japan for 11/2 years. He returned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was discharged in August of 1959.

From the Charleston Daily Gazette, June 1956. SOUTH CHARLESTON WAS NEVER LIKE THIS Marine Reservists in Summer Training By MSGT. C M. AKEY PARRIS ISLANDS, S. C , Jun. 20, 1956 "South Charleston was never like this." Marine Reserve Privates Charles W. Carden, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Carden. 4520 Kanawha Ave., South Charleston, and William J. Clark, son of Mrs. Goldie Clark, Route 6, Charleston, expressed the sentiments of 41 young Leathernecks, all members of the Marine Corps Reserve 4th Engineer Company. The South Charleston Reserve Unit Marines arrived here at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot last week to undergo 10 weeks recruit training. Each man requested assignment to recruit training under a program which allows them to return to the 4th Engineers upon completion of training. According to Carden and Clark, the next 10 weeks will be busy ones if they are anything like the past week. Following a strict schedule, the men have been given physical examinations, a traditional Marine "Boot" haircut, drawn utility uniforms, rifles, equipment and been introduced to their drill instructors. Carden, a clerk at Leonard' sDrug Store in South Charleston and Clark, who works as a clerk for Sears and Roebuck in Charleston, both commented on their haircuts. It's a tossup as to which man would frighten the most customers. Like the rest of the 4th Engineer Reserves, Cardin and Clark have found this is a real change from attending drills once a week. The men are on the go from dawn to dusk. During the next 10 weeks they will receive instructions in military drill, parades and ceremonies, manual of arms, guard duty, personal hygiene, first aid and defense against chemical and atomic attack. Three weeks will be spent on the rifle range where they will fire the M-l rifle for qualification. In addition, each man will fire the .45 caliber pistol, 22 rifle and 22 pistol. The Mountaineer State Reserve will bivouac at Elliot's Beach where they will participate in maneuvers intended to teach them how to live in the field. The final two weeks training will be a review of instruction received in earlier training. Their last day of training will be graduation day. At these exercises, awards will be made to the outstanding

man and the high-shooter of the platoon, Men demonstrating Outstanding qualities at leadership during recruit training will, be promoted to private first class. The next day, a hardened, sharp looking group of Marines from the 4th Engineer Company will board buses for the return to South Charleston and their jobs in civilian life.
