The Descent Middle Analysis

Shot 1

M/S- this was used on Beth's face and also to highlight Sarah the main character within the background, I believe this was featured to express shock and fear between the two friends.

Within this scene the group of girl are heading for the exit but face a diploma, this results in the girls having to help each other across with what ever equipment they have from one side of cave to the other.

The lighting within this scene was quite dull and dark, but also the colour red was highlighted maybe suggesting danger, fear, blood or even death.

Shot 2

W/S- wide shot used to show the never ending hole between the two sides and also to capture shock to us as viewers.

After shot 1 the camera cuts to this w/s to imply a life or death situation. By using this, us as viewers are on the edge of our seats wandering what's happening next or which character will die?

Within this scene again the colour red is expressed again to imply fear, blood or danger. The music tempo was quite slow as Juno started crossing which also linked in with the camera movements.

Shot 3

C/U – close up used on Juno face to portray her emotions as she is holding on for dear life.

Within shot 3 Juno is the main focus as she is trying to cross to the other side joining her friends, while removing the equipment like the hooks and extra rope used from the starting point.

Again lighting has been used I believe to capture the reaction on Juno’s face and also to make her standout from the dark hole.

Shot 4

A/S- Ariel shot used as Juno falls, used to show her movement from the top of the cave edge heading towards the bottom.

Within this scene the camera captures a quick, fast pace fall and then suddenly cuts and Juno has stop falling and remains being held up by the ropes. Within this scene the camera follows her every movements so to us as viewers fear it’s the end for Juno.

Shot 5

W/S- wide shot used to showing Juno holding on the end of the rope.

Within this scene the camera focuses on Juno mainly with the background also in focus, by doing this it releases a outburst of relief for Juno and the audience as Juno has survive a unpleasant situation .

The lighting continued being red throughout this scene, but the camera movement and tempo reduced as the theme of relief was highlighted.
