Working through a design process turns a brief into a finished product. The design process has many
stages, each stage requiring design thinking. The design process engages a high degree of
creaCvity which is controlled and directed by the process to achieve products that are viable pracCcal soluCons to the design
problem.

Research
The research stage is used to invesCgate the subject ma[er and the target audience of the brief, so as to accumulate relevant informaCon that will be used to inform design decisions. The aim is to determine and dissect the
a\tudes and behaviours of the target audience. Research into the target group also helps determine what effecCvely communicates with this
group and what alienates them.

[ Only with contact, observaCon and empathy with the target market can you hope to design soluCons that fit their
expectaCons ]

Concept GeneraCon
The concept generaCon or the ideate stage sees concepts created That may solve your design problem. This is the part of the design
Process where creaCvity is unleashed. At this stage we seek to generate Concepts that will be worked up and resolved in further stages of the process

[ Concept GeneraCon Methods ]
Brainstorming
Sketching
[ collaborate your research and ideas and categories into secCons ]
[ sketch in thumbnails and sketch a lot. The idea Is more important than The detail ]
Mock-‐Up
[ Mock up three of your concepts for presentaCon ]

[ Most Professional Designers sketch in order to quickly put down an idea ]

Chose One concept to develop [ throughout the design process it is essenCal to remember who is the target audience and consider how your design ideas might resonate with this audience ]

Concept development
Typography selec(on Colour selec(on
Image selec(on Refine the layout
[ using informaCon gathered at research stage to refine each aspect of your selected design ]
[ use the informaCon learnt in the tutorial ‘principles of design’ to refine the layout ]
[ FONT / size / spacing match font choice to your market ]
[ colour meanings ]
[ different images have different meanings in different cultures ]
[ map your concept to your research ]
[ Make criCcal design decisions ]

[ now you must learn how to criCque and stand over your work ] © Patrick Morgan | Designer
EvaluaCon
Self Evaluate your at every stage
There will be a cri(que at each deliverable stage of the project
[ concept generaCon – concept development – final design ]
[ understand why and when you made criCcal design decisions ]
Feedback [ on compleCon of the project you will receive feedback on Your ability's to interpret a brief to final design ]

[ Choice and use of typography ]
[ Relevance of imagery to the subject ]
[ Choice and use of colour ]
[ ProducCon quality ]
[ CreaCvity and innovaCon ]
[ interpretaCon of the brief ]
EvaluaCon [ subheadings ]
[ all feedback, both posiCve and negaCve should be use to develop your design skills ] © Patrick Morgan | Designer
