Melvil Dewey is the Inventor of the Dewey Decimal System. He was only 24 when he created it.
THE DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM The Dewey Decimal
System is a way of Classifying and Organizing books in the library. It usually has a call number with two or three lines, on the spine label.
DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM Before Melvil Dewey’s invention, all the
books in the library weren’t organized. Librarians put them on the shelves wherever they would fit, and had a book that had where they’d been placed.
A CALL NUMBER Reading a call
number can be intimidating, but it’s really easy. The call number is where the book goes in the library, or the address of the book.
READING A CALL NUMBER The first line in the call number is the
genre on the book. It can be an actual number (300, 600, etc.) or it can be an abbreviation of the genre (FAST for fast read, FIC for fiction, etc.)
READING A CALL NUMBER The second line of a
call number is the first three letters of an author’s name (POE for Edgar Allen Poe, MEY for Stephanie Meyer, etc.)
READING A CALL NUMBER Some libraries even include
a third line. This line is the year the book was published.
DEWEY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM Numbers between 300-399 in
the Dewey Decimal System are Social Sciences. This is how people live and work in society.
