A gentleman is defined as “a man who is polite and well educated, who has excellent manners and always behaves well”. At Durban High School we have a determined focus on creating these gentlemen. However, the most powerful word remains “character”. Derived from the Greek word “charakter” meaning engraving tool, it is the sum of the values and virtues that are engraved into our boys through the example of their family and the example of our School community. Character is defined as: “referring to the sum of the characteristics possessed by a person referring specially to moral qualities, ethical standards, principles and the like”. You can be exceptionally proud of this young man.” This young man, despite his humility, has been recognised at our recent assembly. The reaction to this small act has been extremely well received and commented on. Maybe because we recognise that it talks to the character of the young man. Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones. As Jason Brown Junior put it: “Character is what we do when we think no one is looking”. However, perhaps it is sad that an act that should be so commonplace in our society is reflected as an outstanding moment to be lauded for the demonstrated values and character of the young man. We need to tell far more stories like this. As parents and as a community, we need to prioritise character development. As Frederick Douglass put it: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”. As parents, you have the most important role to play in the development of this character. I share the following story: “On a snowy day, a father took his eight-year-old son for a walk. Wearied by the high drifts, the boy began to fall behind his father. After a few minutes the father looked back and found that his boy was behind him, imitating his every move and walking in the tracks the father had made in the snow. “When I saw this,” the man told one of his friends afterwards, “I said to myself, it behoves me to walk very straight when this fellow is already following in my tracks”.” Don’t worry that your children never listen to you, worry that they are

- Sai Baba The foundations of our great School are manifested in our School motto, our vision statement, our School values and in our code of conduct. They are the product of a history of raising boys into manhood. In my talks to prospective parents and boys, I often refer to our School motto: “Producing gentlemen of character”. University. This research was directed at boys only education over a number of years and around the world. This research is titled “For Whom the Boy Toils : The Primacy of Relationship in Boys’ Learning”. The message was both clear and powerful. Boys experience their teachers before they experience the lessons they teach. The best teachers go beyond the curriculum. As cultural forces influencing children continue to undermine values and ethics, so parents rely evermore on our roles to reinforce values and character development! I commend you on your noble cause.

To Our Boys: Never in history have human virtues been so battered. The at times immoral character of modern society continues to sacrifice values at the altar of expediency. Mahatma Gandhi’s seven dangers of human virtue are clanging loudly today: • Wealth without work• Pleasure without conscience• Knowledge without character• Business without ethics• Science without humanity• Religion without sacrifice• Politics without principle

Is it not alarming that this is so prevalent in our lives right now?

However, through your rites of passage and life through Durban High School you received far more than a simple education. Our motto, vision, values and code of conduct have become your motto, your vision, your values and your code of conduct. School is renowned for producing leaders in all facets of life in the past. Now more than ever the world needs leaders and especially ethical leaders, into the future.

You now need to go on to become good fathers and good men as you set the example for the next generation of Durban High School Boys. In time it could be your own sons that “follow your footprints in

the snow”. May they be footprints we can all be proud of.

“May each and every one of them ever remember that as he is, so is his school.” - D C Thompson, 9th Head Master

A D Pinheiro 15th Head Master

Durban High School is delighted to announce the Head Prefect, Deputy Head Prefects and the Prefect Body for 2022.

Congratulations to the Head Prefect for 2022, Owen Morgenrood! Owen has shown tremendous ability in all fields of School life since his arrival in Grade 8 and has achieved the rare feat of being chosen as Head Prefect and 1st Team Rugby Captain as a Grade 11 pupil.

Congratulations to the Deputy Head Prefects and the 14 Prefects who will also look to contribute and continue the legacy of leadership at DHS.

Head Prefect: Owen Morgenrood

Deputy Head Prefects: Bagcine Gqweta and Michael Russell

Prefects: Kwaku Boateng, Connor Carson, Sybrand Erwee, Alitha Leeuw, Aphelele Madonda, Lwandile Mshengu, Mihlali Ndonga, Minenhle Ngcamu, Thapelo Ramoholi, Jordan Ramsamy and Aphiwe Zama

Please note that more Prefects will be announced next term.

Congratulations on your selection, Gentlemen! We are very proud of you and wish you all the very best as you lead School for 2022.

always watching you. Evidence, research and experience all tell us that a father and family play the most critical primary role in the character development of an adolescent boy. Proverbs 20:7 - “A righteous man who walks in his integrity - how blessed are his sons after him.” In the book “Raising a Modern Day Knight” it espouses that every son needs vision, and direction and meaningful answers to questions such as: • What is a man?• What are a man’s

responsibilities? • What does a man believe?• How does a man behave?• What should a man try to

achieve?

In helping him answer these questions you allow him to go into the future with: • A vision for manhood;• A personal Code of Conduct,

and;• A transcendent cause.

Through this they will become good men and good fathers.

The role of teachers is equally as important. And even more so in this day and age. “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, calibre and future of an individual.” Abdul Kalam

It is not the curriculum that makes our profession noble, but the power that we have to influence positively the lives of our boys. In actively living and teaching our School motto, vision statement, School values and code of conduct and most importantly through the example we set, we are able to shape the character of our boys. Some of our boys come from homes that are destructive and the onus is on us to use our relational opportunities to mould our Boys. Durban High School is a member of the International Boys School Coalition (IBSC). The IBSC recently released a comprehensive research book done by an Australian

Page 3 of 12 Durban High School The DHS Herald Senior Prize-Giving & Matric Bell Ringing Ceremony The Durban High School annual Senior Prize-Giving Ceremony was held on Monday 18 October. The guest speaker for the event was DHS Old Boy, Dr Menelisi Luthuli (Class of 2006).

The audience was welcomed to the ceremony by HOD, Mr Sunil Bodasing, and then addressed by the Head Master, Mr A D Pinheiro. Mr Pinheiro’s address was followed by a tribute to Mr Bodasing paid by his colleague Mr R Smyth. Mr Bodasing has been promoted to Principal of Queensburgh High School and has left DHS after 20 years of service.

After a musical interlude Mr Ian Lewis introduced guest speaker, Dr Luthuli, who has a PhD in Business Science and has recently been promoted to Marketing Executive of The Spar Group. Dr Luthuli, a typical DHS Boy, played 1st Team Basketball, 2nd Team Rugby and got into his fair share of mischief which he always tempered with his winning smile.

Dr Luthuli talked to the Boys about growing up in Umlazi and his journey through DPHS, DHS and obtaining his doctorate. He had a number of messages for the boys - life is difficult, the sooner you accept that the sooner you can move on; learn to understand people and interact with them, form relationships that are important; adapt, create ideas, make sure you recreate yourself, things change; find your passion and follow it; invest in yourself; persevere through failure and disappointment; better yourself and believe in yourself; chip away at your goals; challenge yourself every day; when you get there don’t forget the people behind you; always do the right thing, integrity is key; and lastly, embrace our country, you are the future.

Dr Luthuli was then invited to hand over the awards to the prize

winners. The major award for the day, the CG Hands Memorial Prize for Dux was awarded to Tusani Mthembu. In addition to being first in Grade 12, Tusani also achieved the W I Knight Prize for Mathematics, the Eddie Corlett Prize for Accounting, the subject prize for Life Orientation, the DHS Association Prize for Engineering Graphics and Design and a Merit Certificate for achieving an “A” aggregate in 2021.

Another major award winner on the day was Head Prefect for 2021 Samuel Spooner, who received the George Armstrong Award for Head Prefect of the School, the Stephen Mulholland Prize for All Round Involvement and Commitment and the Sportsman of the Year Award.

The GB Lapinsky Prize for Dux Proxime Accessit (Dux runner up) was awarded to Mikail Kreuzer. Mikail also received the Bill Payn Prize for English Home Language, the Chris Seabrooke Prize for Music, a Merit Certificate, shared the ‘SAS’ Nourse Prize for Geography and was awarded the John Adam Tollman Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Achievement in the Art of Music.

The Kessel Feinstein prize for third in Grade 12 was awarded to Jadin Dayanund, who also received the G J Armstrong Prize for Physical Sciences and a merit certificate.

Once the prizes had all been awarded, Head Prefect, Samuel Spooner, took to the podium. He thanked Dr Luthuli and presented him with a gift from the school. He then addressed the audience, congratulating the Class of 2021 on their achievements and thanking them for their support and strength of character shown, particularly during these difficult times. He also thanked the Staff of DHS for the role they had played, saying “The values that DHS instilled in us since Grade 8

Senior Prize-Giving & Matric Bell Ringing Ceremony, cont’d has been at the root of all the success that we as Grade 12 learners have achieved”.

Sam then assisted the Head Prefect for 2022, Owen Morgenrood, into his new Head Prefect blazer to signify the changing of the guard as he handed the reins over to the new watch.

The National Anthem was sung by all to end off the ceremony. Tea was served in the Seabrooke Theatre Foyer and this was followed by the Matric Bell Ringing Ceremony which was held on Van Heerden Field. The Matrics were addressed by CEO of the DHS Foundation and Old Boy, Mr Andrew Shedlock (Class of 1981), and Old Boys Samkelo Nthetha (Class of 2017) and Joshua Spooner (Class of 2016).

Sam Spooner read out the significance of the 8 Bells and then once again assisted new Head Prefect Owen Morgenrood into his new blazer to signify the handing over of seniority to the incoming leaders of the school for 2022.

The Matric boys then all filed past the Head Master, Mr Pinheiro, and Mr Shedlock, shook their hands and rang the Rhineland Bell overlooking the pool in farewell to their years at Durban High School. Each boy received a gift bag before going through to the Memorial Courtyard to sing the School Song and perform the war cries.

Community Service 155 000 meals for the needy. Our boys worked tirelessly and with enthusiasm to undertake this enormous task. Opting to stay longer than most, they helped in two sessions from 9am-12pm. We hope in the future to host this event and spread the love and support of this worthy cause. A very big thank you to all involved for coming out despite the rainy weather and giving up their time & energy. The deadline of 155 000 meals in record time. We are extremely proud of all our boys and the enthusiasm with which they undertake community service and the drive they have to serve as they continue to put the needs of the community ahead of your own.

Ms Joshua and boys of DHS have continued to contribute to society by delivering hampers and essential foods to two incredible organisations - The Durban Child & Youth Centre and St Martin's Diocesan Home for Children were both incredibly grateful for the selfless act of our boys. We would like to make special mention of The Domino Foundation who match DHS with the same number of hampers and essential foods every time that we at School donate to the less fortunate. 10 DHS boys and two staff members also participated in helping “Rise Against Hunger Africa” by packing

Mrs Saloshana Nagiah: 2021 is the 21st year of service to DHS from the ever popular Afrikaans teacher, Mrs Nagiah! We congratulate her on her recent appointment as HoD of Languages Mrs Nagiah joined School at the turn of the new millennium in 2000 and we have been so incredibly lucky and blessed to still have her on our staff. Mrs Nagiah has deservedly worked her way up the ranks of our staff, and also goes above and beyond to contribute to the lives of our boys at School. To name a few achievements, Mrs Nagiah is currently: HoD of Languages, Pastoral Head of Grade 10, Head of our incredibly successful Cultural Activities, M-i-C for Chess at DHS, which under her guidance and expertise has become a national powerhouse. Sporting News and Results Water Polo vs Maritzburg College: A great set of results vs College 1st Team Won 12-7 2nd Team Drew 5-5 U15A Won 16-7 U14A Won 19-5 U14B Won 11-1 U14 Charl van Rooyen Cricket Festival: The Durban High School U14A Cricket team were unbeaten at the prestigious Charl van Rooyen Cricket Festival at Kearsney on the first weekend of the holidays! The team beat Pretoria Boys High School in their opening fixture by 7 wickets. They followed this with a stunning 9 wicket win against Waterkloof. Special mention to Krian Jugoo who scored 50 not out off 38 balls and Semal Pillay who scored 54 not out off 55 balls. The team then continued their brilliant results of late with another superb victory, a 7 wicket win against Paarl Boys High. This makes it four wins on the trot for the U14A side after their win last week against Maritzburg College. To the Head Coach and Director of Cricket, Mr Lazarus, your dedication has had a profound effect on the boys. The results are continuing to show across the board for our sport teams which is a direct reflection of the tireless work being put in from our coaches and boys, and we are so proud of all of you. Congratulations to the boys and coaches on this special achievement. 1st XI Cricket @ Michaelmas Week: The DHS 1st XI played three games at the Michaelmas Week at Maritzburg College and came away with one win after tightly contested fixtures.

A special highlight from the week for School was the presentation of a certificate from Maritzburg College for having participated in 60 of the 61 Michaelmas Weeks. Sport Results vs College: DHS played cricket fixtures against our oldest traditional rivals, Maritzburg College, with the 1st XI, U15A and U14A all participating in a weekday fixture up in Maritzburg after school. We are pleased to say that two of these three fixtures were won by School, with the U14A and U15A continuing with the very impressive results of our Junior Age Group teams. The 1st XI unfortunately lost their fixture. Despite the lack of sport played this year, we would like to congratulate our Junior Age Group teams on their results in the few fixtures that they have played. Congratulations to all the boys and coaches on these fantastic results, we are extremely proud of you! ABSA Wildeklawer Schools Rugby Tournament 2022: DHS are honoured and extremely proud to say that we have been invited to participate in the prestigious Absa Wildeklawer Schools Rugby tournament in 2022 where the top Rugby schools from around the country participate. Our 1st XV, U16A, U15A and U14A will all be playing in what has become the biggest schools rugby festival in South Africa. School Hosts The Hollywoodbets Dolphins: DHS are incredibly honoured that out of all the schools available in KZN, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins chose to host their fixture against The KZN Colts at DHS. We are also so proud to be able to say that two Old Boys are at the helm of the team - Imraan Khan (Class of

2001) is Head Coach, whilst Mduduzi Mbatha (Class of 2006) is the Fielding Coach. Both Imraan and Mduduzi were phenomenal cricketers themselves - Imraan played KZN Schools for three consecutive years from 1999 to 2001 and also Captained KZN Schools in 2001; Mduduzi also played KZN Schools for three consecutive years from 2004 to 2006 and boasts a brilliant achievement of Captaining the KZN Schools Team in 2005 and 2006! Both Old Boys also Captained SA Schools! Imraan was the Captain in 2001 and Mduduzi Captained the team in 2005. Imraan went all the way and received the honour of becoming a Protea! Imraan and Mduduzi also played over three years for the 1st XI Cricket Team at School, with both of them Captaining the team. We continue to pride ourselves on our envious Cricketing history that boasts statistics such as the most International Cricketers produced by any school in the world. We are also very excited with the talent that has been displayed in various friendly fixtures against local schools from our Junior Cricket Teams. DHS Staff vs DHS U16A Hockey Match Report: The DHS Staff had reason to celebrate over the long weekend as they put in a tactical Master Class which was spearheaded by Director of Hockey, Mr Baker which resulted in a 5-3 victory against the U16A Hockey team. Credit must go to the youthful U16A Team which consists of many U15 and a handful of U14 players. The boys were full of running, however, this wasn't enough to claim the victory. A tactic of the staff was to use the sheer physical presence of Mr Hulley upfront in order to hopefully rattle

Sporting News & Results, cont’d the youngsters a bit. This clearly worked as this tactic allowed a huge amount of space to be created for none other than Mr Pillay in the D, who produced arguably one of the best Staff goals seen in a very long time. Not to be outdone, Mr Baker produced a deadly shot which would have made an Olympian proud, rebounding in off the top post. The shot was hit with such force that many who played believed he had broken the goals. Fittingly, Mr Usher (one of our Conditioning Coaches for our sportsmen) produced a run from deep in his half down the line at frightening speed, cutting inside to show sublime skill and then finishing off with finesse. Mr Kelly-Stack showed why he is so highly rated as a player and a coach by producing no less than five moments of brilliance in the lead up to his goal. To finish off for the Staff, a penalty was awarded. Mr Bezuidenhout (Director of Soccer) stepped up to

the plate and produced a flick that would have made Old Boy Mike Cullen proud. This took the goal tally to 5 for the Staff. Credit must go to the defenders of The Staff. Mr Bottomley, Mr Matthysen, Mr Sityana and Mr Goodwin Jnr were resolute in stopping constant counter attacks. Mr Bennett, despite being late and the sole reason for the U16A's first goal, recovered from this initial setback and produced saves that looked like something out of a movie. Mr Mkhaliphi and Mr Dudas were also unsung heroes with the tireless work they showed in the middle. The remaining 2 goals scored by the U16A's were both scored against the run of play. A fantastic evening was had by all and both Staff and Boys wait in great anticipation for next year’s fixture.

Three sets of Brothers play Water Polo Armistice Service Mr S La Marque presided as Master of Ceremonies, Head Master Mr Pinheiro welcomed the guests, Rev Michael Fourie presented the lesson and Homily and Mr David Bennett read out the names of the fallen from the Roll of Honour. Ms Natalie Rungan sang a beautiful rendition of an all-time favourite, ‘What a Wonderful World’ and The Last Post and Reveille played on the trumpet by Yaron Smith (Grade 12) created a spine-tingling effect on all of those who were in attendance. "We will remember them."

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." From: For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon Durban High School hosted the annual calendar event where our fallen heroes are honoured - the Armistice Service. At this remembrance service we remember the 277 DHS Old Boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service for their country while fighting in various wars for the freedom and democracy we experience today. As always the ceremony was extremely moving and emotional.
